A Passing Moment

April 30, 2008 in Blogs

I received word this afternoon that Scott Glenning, who had barely begun to play in our Multiverser forum game, has died.  I do not know the details.  He was a kind and friendly person who suffered somewhat severe disability from neurological damage in an accident; I knew him through church locally, where he appeared perhaps a year ago, and felt that there was at least the beginnings of a friendship there.

There is a saying somewhere that runs I use to complain that I had no shoes until I met a man who had no feet.  Life is hard here, and my bronchitis atop my asthma makes breathing difficult, which makes everything else difficult as well.  In some ways I envy Scott–he got to go home first–but then, his difficulties exceeded mine, and he lived with them usually cheerfully.  I only met his wife once; I hope the best for her.

I could talk about the work accomplished today–the disruptions of the routine and the impact this has on my schedule–but it seems appropriate at this point to let those things slide and allow Scott to be put to rest in our minds and hearts.

Of course, it also means I may have to find another playtester for that world; but that’s a problem for another day.

Much Better, Thank You

April 29, 2008 in Blogs

Breathing is still labored, but not so labored as it was.  How much of that is the antibiotic and how much something approaching a good night’s rest is more than I can guess.

My collegiate son came home for a few hours today.  He needed a physical and fingerprinting in anticipation of his recurring summer job.  Unfortunately, he had car trouble on the way home, so the physical got bumped to another time.  He has already returned for his evening class, which he was loathe to miss.  He took a copy of Faith and Gaming with him, and wants me to let him know when that Non-productive broadcast is going to air, since he’ll be in the listening area then.

Meanwhile I am almost caught up on yesterday–that’s overstating it, actually, since there is a treasure trove of forum posts awaiting my attention, and they’re not going to be finished before dinner by any stretch.  However, there is at least faint hope that I will be able to catch up tonight, or else that I will be able to get to the place tonight that I can catch up tomorrow.

I’m not going to do it by talking about it, though, so let me get to it.

Non-productive with Timothy Zahn

April 28, 2008 in Blogs

I would love to tell you that Ubercon X was great, but I would be lying, and although I will obfuscate and conceal, I do attempt not to lie.

It was not without its highlights.  I very much enjoyed meeting Timothy Zahn and his wife Anna, and hope they will find the time to drop me a note eventually.  He and I sat on one panel on early influences, along with Josepha Sherman, and the Zahns came to our otherwise sparsely attended Sunday morning Christian Gamers Guild-sponsored worship service.

That panel was recorded (were I to say “taped” I would be showing my age) by a group that produces a broad and podcast program under the name Non-productive, and it will be airing on the Rutgers radio station and another local station fairly soon.  They also tapped me to do a promo for the show, which they let me write:

This is Multiverser author M. J. Young encouraging you to listen to the most Non-productive broadcast in any universe.

The tech says I have no idea how accurate that is, and that it will go over well with their fanbase.  Now I wonder whether anyone in their fanbase would have any clue as to who I am.

I was on two other panels, one entitled How to Write a Game Anyone Can Play, but I’m not sure that the panelists all agreed that was a suitable goal.  Chris O’Neil, Peter Schweighofer, Tony DiGeralamo, Dave Simpson, and someone who did not make any of the program listings were part of that.  Much the same group also talked about how to attend cons and buy books without going broke, although we all joked that if anyone had any ideas on that we’d love to hear them.

However, it was a very slow con.  Tony DiGeralamo agreed with me that there were fewer people here than at previous cons, and most of them the same people.  Even so, many of the expected people were absent.  One fan purchased copies of the two new books, Faith and Gaming and Game Ideas Unlimited Volume 1, but when it comes to it my mother bought more books (one of each of those plus copies of About the Fruit and What Does God Expect–and yes, my mother bought those books, as gifts for her pastors, but I charged her the convention discounts for all books).  If my count is accurate, we had three new players at the table; no one had any money to spend on books, although several expressed sincere-sounding regret on that point.

Of course, conventions are always tiring for me.  I get booked rather solid, with just enough time to sleep overnight before returning in the morning.  I also lost most of an hour of time to a late Friday night phone call which burned up my cell minutes and my sleep.  I should have cut that shorter, but I do enjoy talking to friends even when I should know better.

Further complicating life, I realized sometime on Friday that my resistance was struggling against something, but I had forgotten to bring the Cold-Eze Tropical Fruit drops that are so good against this.  The next morning I found no drug store open, and the next morning although the drug store was open I was late for the first session (a meet and greet Kaffeeklatsch that was mostly guests and staff chatting about games and conventions).  I finally obtained this important medication on my way home after dinner with my parents, but it was too late as I was already plunging into a serious case of bronchitis.

Since I am already a respiratory patient (the asthma), it was insisted that I be seen by the doctor today, and that I obtain an antibiotic for the malady.  I must thank one of my sons for assisting me with the obligatory trip to take my mother-in-law shopping, especially as it seems to have gotten him in dutch with his girlfriend.

All of this means I am collapsing, with little to show for my efforts, and posting this only because I did not want phone calls or e-mails asking where I am.

Thanks for your understanding.  It is to be hoped that tomorrow I will be able to begin catching up on everything that has backed up since Friday.

Not Yet Absent

April 24, 2008 in Blogs

Why don’t you just tell everyone that you don’t have time to post because you have to get ready for Ubercon?

The question would have been less ironic, I suppose, were it not that the one asking it had called me around one in the morning, when I was trying to make good use of the time my laundry was running by washing some of the dishes which must be under control by the time I leave tomorrow–a phone call that lasted over an hour and took me away from the things I needed to do to look at one of the very forum posts he was suggesting I not answer until Monday.  Yet irony or no, it was a good question.  I could decline to attend today’s game, and let it all slide into Monday.  I would be a lot less pressured in terms of convention preparations were I to do so.

It is not so simple as that, however.  To my mind, the question is not whether I will post today, but whether I will attempt to post tomorrow before I leave.  My inclination at the moment is that I will not, but it is a hesitant inclination.  I believe that I have always posted on Friday before departing for any convention, probably all the way back to Apartment Con years ago.  However, I have also gotten caught in traffic, or fallen behind schedule, or otherwise wound up reaching the first event late, or breathless, or both.  I would like this time to get to my hotel first, leave my suitcase there (since I will be traveling in the pickup this time around, and I do not wish to leave my suitcase in the bed of a pickup in a hotel parking lot in the middle of a New Jersey Turnpike interchange while I spend four to six hours in the convention).  That means I’m looking to leave earlier than I usually get out of bed, and hoping to have accomplished at least a few things before that (although I will probably pack most of the stuff into the truck tonight).  So I already feel a bit guilty about the fact that I am nixing tomorrow’s visit, and to add today to it would be too much.

On top of that, as I pointed out to my caller, the work does not stop stacking up simply because I stop doing it.  Come Monday I will have all that I usually do on Monday, plus whatever I did not do in the interim.  Frequently I have managed to pop in and post upon my return Sunday night–but last Ubercon the last session was packed, and this Ubercon promises to be even more insane, so there’s no hope of an early departure (and really, I do not hope that there will be no interest in the last session).  I will be late getting home, and probably will not be able to do the bare minimum of Sunday’s work.  Thus Monday promises to be nightmarishly overloaded, and adding Thursday to it would be completely foolish.

So here I am; but I make no promises that I will return again before Monday.

I Got Got Got Got No Time

April 23, 2008 in Blogs

It was late when I hit the mattress, but not much later than usual.  On the other hand, I’ve been dragging a bit today, and don’t really have time to drag.  I should already have our youngest guest at his doctor’s appointment, but that he is not yet home; I have loaded the trash on the truck to go to the dump (“convenience center” is the term they prefer), but don’t have time to get there and back, so I have to hope to get there after the doctor visit.

And as quick as that, it has all happened.  My essential preparations remaining for today really come down to laundry, and starting to organize all that needs to be packed for the trip to Ubercon.  I also intend to defrost the freezer, because it is iced over but approaching empty, and my mother will undoubtedly stock up my meat supply when I visit her on Sunday evening, so I want to have storage space ready.

For the moment, though, I feel that I may be on top of things.

Moving My Schedule Around

April 22, 2008 in Blogs

Yesterday was sufficiently behind schedule that I did not reach the north end of the state until about four hours later than my original estimate, and then had dessert in the intended rendevous diner (technically a breakfaster, open from ten at night to three in the afternoon and specializing in things like eggs) not quite alone but without the company of the friend I’d expected to meet.

Then, sometime around midnight before I had run into the construction on the Turnpike that set my E.T.A. back from two to two thirty in the morning, I received word by cellular phone that the friend I had volunteered (or been volunteered, I’m still not completely certain) to move expected us to be there by ten in the morning.  That meant an hour of sleep after finishing yesterday’s work, and then an hour after getting kids on buses, and then I stole another hour before getting dressed, getting their late but as they were pretty much just getting started.  It was mid-afternoon by the time we were finished with the task, and approaching dinnertime by the time I was back in the house.

Things did not run smoothly even then.  I requested that a particular member of the household wash dishes, and he indicated that he would do so after he finished some homework.  Since the kitchen situation would have made it difficult even to serve leftovers (my intended meal for the night) I decided to get another hour of sleep before tackling the matter.  Then someone or something woke me every twenty minutes over the next three hours, at the end of which I was more cross than rested, but had to feed the youngest so he could get to bed.

I’ve not yet decided whether I’m going to push through the Tuesday work today or send myself to bed, but I suppose first I should see how long it takes to get through the forum posts, and how I feel at that point.  I’ve a stack of extra tasks tucked into tomorrow, but not so bad that I can’t manage them, depending on the weight of the e-mail.

Ubercrunch

April 21, 2008 in Blogs

Already I am two hours behind my original unreasonably optimistic schedule for today; I should long ago have left to take my mother-in-law shopping, and in fact be preparing for the next leg of that journey, to return a certain young lady to her northern home.  I’ve planned to have dessert and coffee with a friend while up that way, who is interested in seeing the new books.

Speaking of the new books, the Faith and Gaming copies arrived today.  I didn’t order many, but we’ll see how they sell.  I’ve already promised one to the church library, and mentioned to a young high school senior at the church that I would give it to him to peruse before it gets that far, and it’s possible I could sell out on these quickly if things go well–but that’s partly because I did not put much money into stocking copies for myself.

I also managed to make my hotel reservation for Ubercon.  I’m at a nice comfortable inexpensive motel six in the next town; I stayed there last time, and it’s probably less than ten minutes’ drive (I kept finding shorter ways to make the trip, but it will take a couple tries to get it all back in my head).  I’ll be paying a bit less for two nights than convention guests at the select hotels will pay for each night, but I won’t have a shuttle so I’ll have to drive myself between the two points.

I’ve also received an updated analysis of The Last Mimzy, and sent a cursory response; it will require more attention from me, but that probably won’t happen this week, if I can avoid it.

Things are piling up, so I’d better unpile them.

Concerted Effort

April 20, 2008 in Blogs

The Collision concert went reasonably well last night.  Baxter brought his new amp, which looks really good, but because we’d not worked with it I suggested we use the old one for this concert.  Adam got crossed communication wires and went to the wrong coffeehouse location, and since Brittany had to be out early we got a short delay and then did the first song without him, tuned up the bass while Brittany introduced the second, and finished our two songs to audience approval.  I got some compliments on Adam’s playing, but he ducked out early.  Baxter and I did an encore near the end of the night, which also went well, although not as well as the opening songs.

Meanwhile, I’m starting to get nervous about the week ahead.  I’ve got Ubercon on Friday, and Kyler has indicated that he will not be going this time, and I’m not certain what John’s situation is.  I can probably handle it alone–but there are still many preparations to make, including getting my hotel reservation (I don’t know anyone close enough to Edison to stay with them, despite having attended elementary school within half an hour of there).  I have to do inventory of everything that has to go with me, probably printing copies of forms used, and make sure that I have everything packed.  Complicating this, my Monday Workload has been increased because when I take my mother-in-law shopping I will also have to go about ninety minutes further to return a certain young lady to her home.  Then my overbooked Tuesday has been further overbooked by the need to help an old friend move.  I’ve also realized that our youngest guest’s medicine will run out next weekend, and that his doctor cannot refill it without seeing him, so I’m going to have to twist arms to get him an appointment midweek on top of everything else.

It’s not looking good; and I have been alerted that there is a substantial amount of work awaiting me in the form of an analysis of The Last Mimzy that will add a significant chunk of time to Monday’s work.

Conventions always mean crazy weeks; unfortunately, crazy weeks don’t always wait until they are convenient.

What Have I Done?

April 18, 2008 in Blogs

Sometimes it feels to me as if I have not accomplished much–particularly when I wind up collapsing early, then going on late-night errands, then sleeping well into the next afternoon only to commit to long errands on behalf of others.  However, review of the facts suggests otherwise.

At some time within the last twenty-four hours I finished reading a book I have promised to review.  It was an allegorical science fantasy illustrated novel by a writer I know somewhat personally (never met but have corresponded), whose work I have reviewed before.  I’m not certain when I’ll get to the review, as I’ve a lot on my plate at the moment, but I will get to it.

I also returned my attention to the Multiverser Triple Play:  Horror supplement.  What I did was copy all the notes from the development forum to a document on my hard drive.  I was fighting a headache yesterday which is attributable to the fact that the disruptions of the day prevented me ever from getting a cup of coffee, and so I did not feel up to making all the checks as to what still had to be done with those notes.  However, it’s a step in the right direction, and as things appear now sometime after Ubercon I may be able to make progress on it.

I also provided an extensive response to questions about a developing temporal anomalies analysis of The Last Mimzy, which took probably an hour or so from today’s precious time but will mean a new page on the Temporal Anomalies site which might garner some traffic and interest in turn in the Multiverser books.

I’ve agreed to pick up the girlfriend of one of my sons tonight; he has agreed to help keep the dishes under control all weekend.  If he hasn’t got them under control before nine I guess I’m not going, and I’ll have more time to work, but I am hoping that he is sufficiently motivated by the desire to have her visit that he will get to them in time.

I’m also committed to a Collision concert tomorrow night, sans drums or major amplifiers, at the church coffeehouse.  They do this once or twice a year.  Brittany has a school assignment that requires her to be at another location fairly early, so we’re going to have to ask to be at the beginning of the night, but I think they’ll accommodate us.  Last night’s rehearsal went quite well, thank you, and I’m comfortable with our ability to do these two songs at a performance quality level.

I’m not as confident in my ability to finish everything else that must be done, however, so I’d better get to it.

Like Writer’s Block

April 17, 2008 in Blogs

I stare at the screen wondering what to type.  It is very like writer’s block; I do not know what to say.

Of course, it isn’t really writer’s block.  The reason I don’t know what to type is that I was here late last night and am back again early this afternoon, and nothing has happened in the interim.  Of course, it’s not true that nothing has happened.  I got a phone call last night telling me that the Game Ideas Unlimited Volume 1 books would be arriving today (according to tracking information)–and lo, as I am typing the crunch of truck breaks out front alerts me to the arrival. I have now seen copies, and they look good, so assuming I make it, they should be with me at Ubercon.

While I’m on the subject of Game Ideas Unlimited, let me call attention to the next in the series, Screen Wrap.

I did not actually get to bed early–I did, but not early enough–and so I am already tired from a somewhat early start intended to manage anticipated disruptions which have already occurred.  Let me press forward, in the hope that I can finish before I am again too tired.
