Writing Practice, Dec. 23 2001

Posted on 23 December 2001

Welcome. The first thing to relate is that you are going to have to wait to see the last part of the short and incomplete history of the Babylonian Empire. The whole thing will be revised and rewritten, then submitted as a pay article. It will be part of a series of pay articles on the nations of Ærth. Ærth being the world Gygax designed for his Dangerous Journeys: Mythus fantasy RPG. The series itself will start out with the story of the people of Atlantl (our Atlantis).

Why this series? To give people ideas, and to show how one might flesh out one’s gaming world. I am of the opinion that a good background helps the players identify with the world, and their characters. The PCs are no longer existing in a vacuum, but living in a place. This helps players identify with their characters and the land the characters live in. I mean, encountering eight goblins on the way to a dungeon crawl is one thing. Encountering the Grey Shadows Band of the Silver Shrike Tribe while traveling through the White Orm Forest on assignment for the Free City of Blue Wyrm’s Ridge is an entirely different matter.

The article recommendation is: Three Skeptic’s Debate Tools Examined by Alvaro Caso. It can be found on page 37 of Skeptical Inquirer Vol. 26/No. 1 (Jan./Feb. 2002). Well worth the read. I’ll be putting together a WP about it for publication after Christmas

I was going to do it today, but performance anxiety reared its ugly head, and I thought it best to let the essay steep for awhile.

Finally, what with Christmas in a couple of days WP will be taking some time off. Expect the next WP the day after Xmas at the earliest. I hope everybody has a good holiday season. and gets what they richly deserve. (This wish being extended both to my fans and to my critics.:))

See you later.

Alan
