Writing Practice, Dec. 29th 2001

Posted on 29 December 2001

Yes, I’m early. I had this idea, and rather than wait until midnight Pacific Time to share it, I decided to write it up now. I could be back to normal tomorrow.

That out of the way I have this question for you. Are there hobbies in your game. Things people do to relax, take their minds off the mundanities of life. What do they do during their leisure time (assuming they have leisure time)?

In your campaign world what do people do for fun?

Consider Richard. Richard is a mature adult red dragon. Richard makes toys. It’s his hobby. (You gonna try telling a mature adult red dragon his hobby is childish? Didn’t think so.) But not just any toys, Richard makes toys that move. Toys that behave just like the real thing. A miniature brass dragon made out of brass that behaves like a real brass dragon. Or miniatures of humans, demihumans, and humanoids that engage in really real time combat. (Complete with wounds, screams of pain, heroic stands, and all the other fun stuff of real life combat. For all his love of toys, he’s still a red dragon.)

Painting, sculpture, woodcarvirg, bulette racing. What do your PCs and NPCs do when they aren’t making a living?

For that matter, are there awards for the various hobbies? Consider miniature painting competitions and extend the idea to animated paintings. There’d be judging in categories such as; smoothness of animation, color fidelity (the colors stay true throughout the animation) animation range (how much happens during a sequence), fidelity to source, entertainment value, etc.

A little something to think about.

Still getting stabilized on my meds. But at least I’m taking them regularly now. Various things are percolating through my febrile mind, so I should have something for tomorrow. Till then.

Alan
