Replace Me Again
January 27, 2011 in Blogs
Today’s Examiner temporal anomalies installment is bringing us into the home stretch as Linda makes her last trip back, from Friday to Sunday, replacing her self who previously traveled from Saturday to Sunday, and doing so again as they both leap forward to Wednesday. Trying to resolve some of this confusion, I offer Premonition part 12: displacement. There was a surge in readership twice this week; let’s hope it is a portent of things to come.
Meanwhile, things are less than exciting here. I have a convalescing patient and a low bank balance, and the snow we had last night was minor but sufficient that I’m going to have to shovel the end of the drive to get through (more anaerobic exercise). John Mastick has returned to post on his Facebook, but has not responded to my messages. I’d like to think that John Cross’ decision to use the medical marijuana symbol as his forum avatar is not an effort to irritate me, and that even if it is I can find reason not to block all his posts so that the offensive image will not appear on the site, but I’m still considering that possibility. (Someone sent me a list of supposedly paraprosdokian statements, one of which was “Hurting you is the last thing I want to do, but it’s still on the list.” That one fits the definition, and perhaps also the situation.)
Well, I’m going to do some digging, and maybe some driving in the snow, and then I’ll be back to do some gaming.

It’s not an effort to irritate you. The avatar is supposed to be representative of who you are or something you believe in, is it not? Well, that’s exactly what it is.

Besides, who is to say what is offensive? What if I said I found your avatar offensive? (I mean, who wouldn’t be offended looking at your ugly mug? ) It’s something I believe in, and I’d like to think it’s protected under the First Amendment. I also still can’t believe you’re freaking out about one of God’s creations.

Oh and and the ugly mug comment was a joke.

I’m standing up for what I believe in. Would you do any less?

MJ, frankly, I’m offended that you even would consider blocking me because of the avatar. Blocking me for a multitude of other reasons, sure, but not that. You stand up for that which you believe. Do you really think I should do less? It’s not meant to irritate you. A peaceful protest perhaps, but that’s it. I’m expressing and defending a belief that I hold strongly. You don’t really think I should relinquish that, do you? You stand up for that which you believe. Why are you asking me to do any less than you yourself would do?

Oh yeah, and if, on the off chance that you’re thinking about offering me a choice between being blocked and changing the avatar, you might as well just block me when you’re finished reading this. As you keep saying, if someone is dedicated to something, they will make sacrifices for it. Well, this is something I’m dedicated to.

Whoa–John, I think you wrote more on this than I did. Let’s see, my post has 261 words, 1178 characters not including spaces, according to Word. Your posts total 296 words, 1189 characters, so yeah, barely, but you did. (By now I’ve overcome that disparity and am easily ahead again.)
Your e-mail, in which you made this argument much more succinctly, was sufficiently persuasive. I don’t like it at all, but I’m not going to touch it.
I am going to try to give you fewer excuses to post, though, so I don’t have to feel I’ve encouraged its appearance.

Works for me. I didn’t think you would read the email until tomorrow. Oh yeah, and I think you’re still ahead.
