The Giving of Thanks

Posted on 22 November 2007

It is part of our family tradition at Thanksgiving that as we gather to eat, each person (beginning with the youngest) states something for which he is thankful. Although I am not the oldest every time, I am last, which puts me at the disadvantage that all the easy things have been taken. However, I have much for which to be thankful this year. The new furnace is working, the new car passed inspection, and the family is all healthy enough to gather with our houseguests for another celebration.

Let me apologize to our Canadian friends and any from abroad for missing their appropriate holidays this year, and then say to all those in these United States:

Happy Thanksgiving.

The old dude’s supposed to say the deep message of the day. Chances are nothing said is really “touching” until you get to the token old man of the family that says something so incredible and heart-felt that the rest of the family can’t stop thinking about it while they plow through their turkey.

Oh, I don’t always wind up the one with the memorable words. One year it was my eldest. Mother takes in a lot of “strays”–people who need a place to stay while they get back on their feet–and worries sometimes that this is diverting resources from the family. My son offered the thanks for all the people we were able to help and to bring into our family. She still remembers that.
