Well, New Jersey still has some of the cheapest gas in the country, and although we're now running in the $3.75-$3.80 range around here, I managed to get it for $3.67 over by the bridge on my way over. (That's per gallon pricing, for those in places that price per liter; divide by four for a rough equivalent.) The Saturn, which I'm driving, gets 30mpg, plus or minus, and it's mostly highway or country driving from here to there, so it's on the positive side. Since none of those roads have speed limits over 50 or 55, and I'm a stickler for speed limits, I can't have gone sixty miles in one hour, so I can't have spent more than about $7.50 on the gas, really, except that there's a bit of local stop-and-go at the Delaware end and some local roads at my end.

So it seems $10 was probably an exaggeration--although I think I was a bit farther from my mother-in-law when I finished than I was when I started, so I would be justified in adding a bit more to get me back to Jersey. Also, I took the Turnpike to save time coming back--I295 would have gotten me not quite as close not quite as fast, and the $1 toll seemed a worthwhile investment for 65mph speed limits (the Saturn can take it; I would not push the truck that fast), an exit closer to her house by about a mile of stop-and-go driving, and the eliminaton of the particularly difficult I295/I76/NJ47 interchange.

Someone just asked the other day how it is that New Jersey refuses to allow self-service gas stations and still keeps the lowest gas prices in the country. I gave him the answer: we have maximum markup limits by law, stations are not permitted to charge more than a certain specific amount more than they pay for the gas. Since there's also competition in the market, a lot of stations mark up less than that. It keeps our price at the pump below market average for the country.

Your car must be very fuel efficient if you only spent 10 dollars on gas after driving an hour. I'd be willing to bet it was a lot more than that. Sorry MJ, just felt like throwing a monkey into your wrench.
