Gee, tell us how you really feel. I'm guessing you played with a guy like this somewhere.

I've admitted in the thread that I do sometimes target a player or character weakness, particularly in running Multiverser. Of course, I can't kill your characters--only verse them out to another world, and sometimes I've got people begging me to do that one way or another, so I really do need to have a few tricks up my sleeve for such situations.

I also think that the Jefferson Carter NPC strikes me a lot like the Lex Luthor of later incarnations--the corporate exec of the Lois and Clark series, for example. The idea that there is someone out there who is that smart and that devious pulling strings behind the scenes strikes me as a really good comic book style villain. But then, I've not run a supers game, and I don't really know too much of how they play. I have been in games where there was a scheming devious villain working behind the scenes pretending he was on the side of the heroes and taking advantage of his insider status, but not on that scale.

Of course, one of the things that made Lex Luthor such a formiddable adversary is that he could discover and exploit the weaknesses of his enemies. He figured out how to defeat Swamp Thing (but the town never implemented his plan), and he has come inches from defeating Superman more than once. A character like that could be a very challenging foe, particularly since he's likely to be teflon to criminal charges and have excellent lawyers defending him.

I hate GMs who run games this way.

This is an example of someone who is not running a game for the players to have fun in. This is someone running a game entirely for himself. It is not the players and the GM working together to tell a story, it is the GM and the players competing against each other in a game of oneupsmanship that can only end in everyone losing.
Now, some of this as a kneejerk reaction I can understand: some players want to make combat-monsters or perfect characters and steal the show from everyone else. But there are limits to that. Not all the players are doing that. And if they are, so what, if they're not bothering each other? The only case in that article that I can see that sort of thing being justified is the one case in which the other players actually complained.

There's no excuse to do this sort of thing on purpose. This is a mean, nasty way to play that if the players catch you doing they are fully justified in never playing with you again. The only mitigating factor here is that he used an NPC. Theoretically, his players should be able to rest assured that once Jefferson Carter is rotting in prison, that style of play will go away with him. Somehow I don't see the 'screw you' getting any better.

There's been an interesting discussion in connection with an old (1999) John Wick article in the archives here, http://gamingoutpost.com/article/hit_em_where_it_hurts/ Hit 'em Where It Hurts: There's More Than One Way to Kill a Champions Character.

Someone posted a comment on the article, saying that he found it through a link from the Atlas Games site. I've been "wasting valueless time" looking for such a link; if anyone's search-fu is better than mine and they can come up with it, I'd love to read the context in which it was cited.

Yeah--well, I always thought that particular "article" should have been a "blog entry", but since I'm trying to sort out the articles in the archives from 2000 still, it was going to be a while before I actually was able to change that.

Of course, I'm not sure whether the drivel I've posted is any improvement. Thus far the only two comments I've gotten are yours and a Spammer I had to delete.

For anyone who missed it, I've posted a new article on the site. It's exploring a nuance of Edwards' Big Model, in connection with how social contract develops in practice. I am interested in thoughts on the subject. I'm not even sure it's all that significant an insight, but in the discussions I was reading people seemed to be talking around it without recognizing it, so many it's worth something.

Aaron, I'm trying to remember the names of some of the old article series that ran here. I know that Seth's was Dreaming Out Loud, and of course mine was Game Ideas Unlimited; but a lot of them had banners when they first ran, so in the conversion to the new format the ubertitles were lost and only the episode titles remain.

I vaguely remember that there was a Game Design Journal, or something close enough to that which was frequently abbreviated GDJ, and there was another column called Game Design Step-By-Step, but I'm not sure whether that ran concurrently or came from somewhere else. Wick wrote one of these (the development of his OrkWorld game), and I think the other was Skarka. Skarka had a second series later, concurrent with Game Ideas Unlimited and Dreaming Out Loud, at which time you also had the Thursday column and there was someone else whose name and series names I cannot now recall who ran on Monday (which if memory serves means Skarka was on Tuesday and Seth on Wednesday, but I'll see that when I get there).

If you remember the names of any of these columns, I'll tag the articles accordingly as I go.

Thanks.

O.K., put that down as weird. Seth's article was appearing whenever I called for http://gamingoutpost.com/article/whats_in_a_name/ and I could not find Gary's. I added tags to Seth's, and now http://gamingoutpost.com/article/whats_in_a_name/ gives me Gary's article, and Seth's appears at http://gamingoutpost.com/article/whats_in_a_name-2/ complete with the tags I had added when it was at the other address.

I'll call it a hiccough in the database, but make you aware of it in case there's something else to it.

Aaron et al.--

We've hit a bit of a glitch with the article software.

On May 6, 1999, Gary Gygax' article What's In a Name? was posted to the site; it dealt with whether computer role playing games deserved to be called role playing games at all.

On August 7, 2001, Seth Ben-Ezra posted an entry in his Dreaming Out Loud series by the same title, What's In a Name?.

Unfortunately, the links in the archives that are supposed to take me to Gary's article are taking me to Seth's--and so are the links that are supposed to be to Seth's article. I cannot find Gary's article on the current server.

I suspect that there's a different name--probably a number or something inserted in Gary's. I remember noticing that when two articles of the same name one was given a number, but I don't remember what number, how it was added, or what articles they were.

I was adding tags to articles, and started to tag Seth's article with Gary's name--a mistake, I fortuitously realized before saving.

Any idea how I get the articles when the system files them incorrectly?

I checked out your user profile and, while you had a username, your display name was set to blank and you didn't have a user role in the system. Not sure how that happened, but I fixed both.

I noticed on the front page that there was a comment on an old article, so I went to see it, here. It looks like the work of a bot. The name "Nick" was hyperlinked to some sort of automotive site. I edited out both the link and the e-mail address, but left the comment (it was rather inoccuous, and editing was readily obvious while I didn't see the ability to delete until after I'd done the editing). Probably next time I would just delete the comment, but I thought I'd alert you to the possibility that there's a bot program out there that has figured out how to comment here.

I'll keep on it.
