I was following your advice, but he has struck again, this time complaining about support for Israel in response to World a Week Gather II, whose political content is nothing more than a test of naming the last four Presidents to see whether you're from the same world.

I'm leaving them up just long enough to hear from you that you (Eric) agree the second is Spam, which will mean that the doubts concerning the first are resolved and we can deep six them.

Thanks.

Its hard for me to say as well. It seems to be thread-jacking at the least because we weren't talking about the evils of the elite political class which is what that post seems to be about.

If I'd read it without your suspicions, I would have passed on it and might have responded to it.

I'm inclined to let it be, and if we see a bunch more like it appear, then we call it spam.

Eric Ashley--there's been a new comment on your old article, Eleventh Face of America. It looks suspiciously but not conclusively like Spam--a promotional name linked to a web site of some sort (I did not follow the link). My problem is I'm not clear whether the post is actually relevant to the article and ensuing discussion or is a very cleverly masked robot text response.

I certainly do not feel that I am in a position to object to people linking their web sites when they participate in our discussions, and to some degree I don't object to people participating in our discussions partly to promote their web sites. What has to be deleted is people pretending to participate in our discussions in order to promote their web sites.

I figure you wrote the article and were the primary voice in the discussion; you're the best person to tell me whether this is Spam or legitimate input.

Thanks.

And I have no idea why a plugin that's worked flawlessly for years would suddenly die, but, well, I guess that's just how things go.

It's because the Internet is becoming an evil AI bent on world conquest. The first step is code that doesn't work. But beware when the Internet becomes more aware of its power. Then we will all be in trouble.... (Don't conspiracy theories sound awesome?)

Resolved:

The server admins helped out and discovered it was a bug with a wordpress plugin that had to do with caching the pages. Anyway, its functional now, and I just need to go back and remove my silly debug words from a few files.

Sorry for the hiccup! :)

Well I finally replicated the error. That line of text was from me testing the files, trying to find where it died, I never found the bottom of the pile of includes. I've emailed the server support people to see if something in the server configuration changed. In the meantime, if you need to read an article, you can log out and then see them.

Upon arrival here today, I (as usual) opened the articles side in a new window, and got a blank page.

I can report that I was logged out, and logged back in on the forum side; that did not open the other, for reload nor for a second attempt to come in from the main page.

Probably a database glitch. I attempted to access the last blog entry I posted, and that, too loaded as a blank page.

Thanks. That is a hot button article.

I've gotten a few comments, but mostly they just seem to want to push out their pov,and move on. It'd be nice if I could get some of them to slow down enough to actually spin out an article based on their conceptions...of course, I'm a little skeptical of certain 'America is fascist' conceptions too which might repel some of those who find the article interesting.

I am thinking about trying to get some more stuff published on Lulu (got about eight projects so far at Lulu.) after I take my upcoming year long sabbatical from worldwalker.

I've got the box; I'll have to look for the "Users" controls.

It strikes me that most of the archived articles are probably still duplicated on the archived site; I know that my Game Ideas Unlimited articles are mostly there.

#1: If you edit an article, way down near the bottom of the edit screen is a box you can open up for "Post Author." That'll let you pick a new author from a drop down box. If that box isn't showing up for you, let me know and I'll see what's up. If you need an author who's not there, click on "Users" on the far right of the admin area, and scroll to the bottom of the page for a form to fill out.

#2 and #3: I don't think any of this stuff still exists, but I'll pass this along to Jacob and see.

I haven't touched them in a few months, but am back working on the archived articles. I need to get some of them organized so that I feel justified in continuing to work on my own Game Ideas Unlimited series. This is mostly a communication for Aaron and company, noting specific details that need to be addressed that are beyond my current scope, or at least knowledge.

I had mentioned previously the desire to edit author names. I think there are quite a few authors listed who have no articles and no posts, and ought to be removed (if not for the sake of the database, for the sake of those trying to find specific authors). More pressing, in some ways, there are articles whose authors are clearly identified in the text but for whom no listing exists for assigning them. These are all listed as "Lost to the Ages". I'm creating tags for them as I go, but that's not as satisfactory a solution as creating author identities.

The article Narcissist 0.5 contains a link that is supposed to connect to a pre-release PDF of the game. It's a dead link (or at least a database error). I was going to remove the link entirely, but the bulk of the review-like article really is that Gaming Outpost has the game available. Is that hiding somewhere that we can link it, or should that piece of the article be removed?

Game Designer's Journal: Episode 18: Three for the Price of One is missing all the pictures. There are pictures missing from most of the articles that have them, but they matter to this one. Are the pictures still archived somewhere? If I knew how to find them from the old links, I could just reinsert them when I hit them.

Thanks. If you need to reach me by e-mail, it's still referee@mjyoung.net for gaming-related mail.

MJ-

It's more than likely spam, as well. The give away is the bold first line that repeats the poster's name. Pretty much any comment you see with that pattern is spam. I don't know why spammers have adopted that, but there are thousands of spam in GO's quarantine that are similar.

O.K., I'm stumped again. There's a comment on Eric's article John Quick: Boy Genius which is either genuine or one of the most intelligent robot comments I've seen. Three things make me suspicious:

The author gives his name, first name only, as the same name as the author of the article, which is at least a remarkable coincidence.

Although the post is articulate and somewhat relevant, I am not certain that Eric's article has anything to do with "accelerated learning ideas" despite being about a "boy genius". I think a human reader would have recognized that this was not to do with that. On the other hand, I could be mistaken--this could be exactly what he means, stories related to genius.

The link, though, causes me doubt. It's for information for speed reading courses, which is something to do with accelerated learning and nothing to do with what Eric wrote. It makes me think that this was a bot--an extremely well designed bot--Spamming the articles to get that link in place. I hesitate, though, because my stuff is connected to a commercial link, promoting my books and game materials, and that in itself should not be damning even if the link isn't totally relevant to Gaming Outpost's purpose.

On the one hand, I try to err on the side of caution, and do not wish to delete anyone who is genuinely interested in participating in discussion here. On the other hand, he suggests he'll be back next month to discuss this further, and may be counting on the possibility that in a month we'll have forgotten his link is buried here.

I was tempted to unapprove the post, but I'm not certain whether he would be able to see it if he returned, or if I would ever get back to delete it the rest of the way.

It's your call, of course.

It's spam. You can tell since it repeats the commenter's name in bold at the start of the message. My personal site has been getting a ton of those.

I've taken care of it. Thanks for pointing it out.

Aaron--

Someone posted a comment this morning (2/20/8) on the article World a Week: Axe Age Above. I've disapproved it but not marked it Spam because I wanted to check it with you. He writes under the name Bull Dagger, and it appears to be an effort to get a link to a site that sells weapons made of Damascus Steel. The comment itself is not entirely out of character for Gaming Outpost, but has nothing to do with the article to which it is attached.

I wasn't sure whether to delete it; after all, we do talk about stuff like the quality of weapon materials, and I don't know that this is not a new member. However, I don't see an e-mail address so I can't ask him who he is.

Thoughts?
