Welcome to Multiverser.

This thread has been set up to walk you through the process of creating a character. You can post your responses here, or open a new thread, as you prefer.

Let me emphasize for clarity that you will be playing yourself, that is, starting as a version of yourself, a character derived entirely from who you are right now, what you can do, what you own and carry. Do not give me the description of some fantasy or science fiction character you want to be. You can become that character over time, if that is your objective, but it's much more interesting to start as yourself.

There will be three posts below. Please answer them one at a time, in separate posts, and be prepared to answer questions. I would rather these were done on separate days, because there are already plenty of people playing, and I need time to digest and copy your materials in addition to running their games.

This is a slightly modified version of our On-the-Fly character generation system--modified to work better in forum play. It creates an incomplete character, on the assumption that it hits all the important points and the details will be added as needed during play.

I realized in someone's thread that I had a really cool idea for a twist to toss his direction--but it would require me to know something about him, and I couldn't ask him outright without giving away the twist. It occurred to me, too, that I have wanted to know things about players in the past, and not been able to determine them easily. Thus I am starting a new set of sticky threads specifically to get personal details from people.

No you do not have to participate, but doing so will enhance the ability of your referee to run your game. And no, you do not have to answer all of the questions nor all of the threads to participate. I recognize that people do want a certain amount of privacy, and might not be comfortable posting personal details of their lives on the Internet. So post what you want, and leave the rest for guesses.

If you are not playing in a Multiverser game, this thread is not intended for you. If you wish to play, you should start with the threads Yes, You Can Play, But.... and The Character Generation Thread to begin your involvement, then come back to these threads to expand your identity.

This thread is about the might-have-beens of your personal relationships. Who were your friends, and particularly your potential "significant others", over the years, and what happened.

Because this area is so very personal, you are invited to be sketchy.

Questions to consider:

Are you married? How did you come together?

Who else did you date seriously? Did you ever think of marrying, or marrying someone else? What happened?

Who have your close friends been? What became of them?

How popular were you, when, and why?

I will begin.

This thread is about your ancestry. I am particularly interested in your national origin, or the blending of national origins that comprise your family. It would also be valuable to know if you have specific ancestors who might be well known, or who did something significant. Even trivial details might be useful at some point. Since it is possible for you to find yourself in a historic version of our world, it is possible for you to cross paths with your own ancestors, and that can also be interesting.

Questions to consider:

What is your national/subracial origin, in general terms, and how does it divide between your parents and grandparents? Where do you get these?

What is the national origin or your surname, that is, is your name originally English, or does it reflect a thread of your ancestors from some other part of the world?

Do you have any famous ancestors who might show up in a history book somewhere?

Do you know what any of your specific ancestors did that was notable, or any of their professions?

Where did they live, and when did they migrate? Do you know what caused them to move to wherever you are?

This thread is about yourself and your family, and particularly the names that are connected to you. It will help in creating divergent selves, in that the referee can play with introducing other family members, or tweaking the family by adding or removing people (your great uncle Joe was killed in World War II, don't you remember?)

Questions to consider:

What else might you have been named? Do you know what names your parents considered for you, and why these were rejected?

What are the names of your parents, grandparents, uncles and aunts, the family names? If you are hesitant to include specific names, you can use descriptives such as "a very Italian ethnic surname" or "a popular given name among the Hispanic community" to give the flavor without revealing the identity.

Do you have siblings, and what are their names? Do you know what their names might have been?

If you are married, what is the name of your spouse? If you are "as good as married", what is the name of your "significant other"?

Do you have children, and what are their names? Are there stories behind these, or alternative names, such as the name for the son you never had?

For those who are no longer alive, when and how did they die? In particular, if you lost a young family member, this might be interesting if the death never happened.

I will begin.

M. J. Young on "Welcome Back Nikolaj"

I am very pleased to have Nikolaj returning to our game.

I suppose the joke of it is that earlier this month I moved his character information to the inactive file--one of the very few people I thought were unlikely to return, and I needed a column near Scott to start listing information on Alice and one near John Cross to start saving stuff on Terry. But it is easily restored, even if I am not completely certain of the original order in which they joined the game.

Nikolaj and I have corresponded on this a bit last week; I apologize again that this has been an incredibly hectic week and I have been unable to move forward with anything. This is an unusual circumstance, so we're going to resolve it with an unusual solution. Nikolaj is going to be presumed to be starting now, as of today, but to have been in the B Monster Movie world in which he began. The actions I had his character do (which were relatively minor, as I recall) will remain his actions, he will fill in a few gaps, and he will begin in a new world--but he will begin as the person he is now, a bit older than he was.

Because he is not exactly the same person, I am posting his character sheet here and he is going to make a few edits. He is permitted to add skills and equipment which he has acquired since he started last time. I hope he will delete items which 1) he no longer has and 2) he did not use already in the game.

Also, Nikolaj, at the bottom of the list is $70,000 in B Monster Movie World cash and "$2000 in hundreds B Monster Movie World from Nikolaj"--I just copied it to each character who got it, including you. You would have had that money for a few days, during which time you were to use the $2000 to purchase whatever you thought would be valuable to you as a verser. As I mentioned in my e-mail, I believe your companions invested it in precious metals and gems and jewelry, which they guessed would be reasonably negotiable in other universes. I will remind you that when you verse out you will have a 220 pound (roughly 110 kilograms) weight limit on any equipment not actually on person (worn or carried such as in pockets or a backpack or duffel you are actually holding/wearing). With that in mind, you may use your money to acquire anything which ought to be reasonably available in that world. I think that dollars and Euros are fairly close to each other in value most of the time, but if that doesn't give you a ballpark figure on how much it is try any currency conversion site on the web.

Here is the sheet as it currently reads:

Name	Nikolaj Ernst Germaine Frederica Bourguignon
a.k.a.	Nico: Not preferred, but endured as allmost everyone shortens it to that.
Bouddi/Bourgui: Shortening/alteration of family name used at highschool by teachers and students.
Denolaj: Last used and most preferred nickname from highschool. Also used in altered form by my mother and brother when in a good and loose mood (nolajke). Also used in my e-mail adress as can be seen.
Meneerke: Used by one person at work. It is a familiarised form of the word mister in flemish. Translated it would meen little mister, but it has not that official ring to it. It's dialect as well.
