I deleted it. There's a spambot hammering us right now, with something like 400 spams a day. Almost all of them are getting caught, but I've been deleting them as they slip through. Thanks for pointing this one out.

I deleted comments by a couple of Spammers, but there is a comment here that seems to be outside my jurisdiction--no edit link when I view it. I thought I should call it to your attention.

Yep, it looks like there is a bot. Which is actually pretty common. The comment spam blocker grabbed 66 today, all either "nice" or "interesting" or something of that sort. It's a good system but every now and then one slips through.

Thanks for pointing it out. I've deleted it.

I noticed on the front page that there was a comment on an old article, so I went to see it, here. It looks like the work of a bot. The name "Nick" was hyperlinked to some sort of automotive site. I edited out both the link and the e-mail address, but left the comment (it was rather inoccuous, and editing was readily obvious while I didn't see the ability to delete until after I'd done the editing). Probably next time I would just delete the comment, but I thought I'd alert you to the possibility that there's a bot program out there that has figured out how to comment here.

I'll keep on it.

For this article, that's probably a good list, though it might be long. I'd shoot for probably around three tags per post or article. Though that's more than necessary for a lot of things. Like if you write, say, an article that's an adventure for Multiverser, you'd probably just tag it "multiverser" and "adventure". But, really, that's up to you as a writer. When I get the system displaying the tags and let you browse articles by them, I'll probably only be showing the X most popular tags, so if you use a ton that are obscure, they just won't show up on that list. It's all meant to be organic that way.

Got it. Will try to remember. So, tags for this might be something like:

forum

technical

tag

posts

articles

blogs

Or something like that? What's a good number of tags for an average article and/or thread?

When you guys write articles and blog posts, can you be sure to fill out some tags in the spot right below where you type the article's text? This is just like the tagging in the old system (and the tags you use here in the forums). While I don't have display of the tags in the site templates yet, I will soon, and then they'll be the way people can browse articles and blogs by subject.

I figure it should be. And I can bump it up again if there's a need. The argument for the limit is to keep people from going back and changing things after other people have responded. Or deleting all their posts and going home if they get upset (which happened on another set of discussions I ran a long time ago, with a guy zeroing out something like 200+ posts over several months).

Ya know Scott, I think you're right. I think there is a time limit on the edits. The last two posts I made in this thread showed EDIT before. That was when the counter read 55 minutes. Now the counter is reading over an hour, and the EDIT function is gone. Strange.

(EDIT) This one just got posted 3 seconds ago, and it shows edit, but the other two don't. Yeah Scott, must be a time limit on it.

whoops, there are supposed to be little backticks around blockquote and quote.

It looks like you surround the text with
<blockquote>
without any ticks. The styling that results isn't obvious, so I've fixed that to make it look more like it ought to.

It seems we are still waiting on DNS records to propagate. I'm not used to it taking this long so I'm getting a little antsy, but I can't get help from the programmers until they can see the issue, and as of now they still can't see the new site.

Clearly things on the updated GO are a little rough, so let me set out some of the upgrades I'll be making in the near future. If you guys want to see stuff added to the list, post it here and I'll see what I can do.

Forum Layout/Integration
The forums are running on the default set of templates that came with them and these obviously don't fit the rest of GO. I'll be updating the layouts to look like the site proper as well as getting the two halves integrated better integrated.

Author Pages
These don't exist right now. I'll fix that. Authors will have their own pages within the site listing their articles and showing off bio and contact info as set in your account preferences. These will be designed to handle blogs vs. articles, so keep blogging by posting in the "Blog Posts" category when you write and they'll get where they need to go.

Of course nothing goes smoothly in the world of IT. The new boards and system seem ok, but we are having trouble getting the archived discussions online. I'm in contact with the people who wrote that software, so hopefully they can get the issues resolved.

Apologies to the people running their online games, I do have a backup plan, so if we can't get stuff fixed by the end of the weekend, I'll try something else.

Well, the forums are...different. I don't see any of the posts, but the cutover happened today. Today as in, I checked at noon and was formulating my ideas to reply to my game thread, and when I checked at 3 all the posts were gone.

I presume the posts are still being cut over, but that's not what the only post on the board suggests.

That was unfortunate. Server wonkiness on a less than adequate host broke things in a way that would've been prohibitively difficult to repair. Jacob and I had been planning for a while to move GO over to a WordPress/bbPress based setup to address many of the shortcomings we'd found with the site, but we hadn't planned to do it so early. The new setup's in place, however, and all the articles and user accounts have been imported. The old discussion forums are archived to keep the messages available, but all new talk should take place here.

Now, some notes on how it all works.

User Accounts These have been imported, though you might have to use the password reminder function to get yourself a new password before you can log in. Also, login names don't support spaces anymore, so we had to modify them to reflect that. If you're having trouble logging in and your old login had spaces, try typing it without them. If you still can't get in, email us and we'll get it sorted out.

Articles are there. When you log in, you can write new ones. If you want to earn AdSense income off of them, make sure you give us your AdSense ID in your user profile. As an added bonus, we're now paying out 100% of the AdSense impressions to authors. That means, if you take advantage of it, you'll earn all the AdSense revenue the site makes from your articles. We won't take a penny of it.

Blogs have been integrated into the system. When you go to write an article, there's a category for blog posts. Pick that and write away. One of the changes I'll make in the near future, as part of the roll out of actual author pages, will be to setup a blog area where those posts are singled out. For now, they'll mingle with regular articles and reviews.

Discussions As you may have noticed, there are far fewer forums. We plan to keep it that way. Instead of having boards for lots of topics, the new setup uses tags. For instance, if you are doing actual play for a Multiverser game, start a new thread in the Actual Play board and give it the tag "multiverser". Clicking on that tag on the board home page on the left, then, will take you to all threads, no matter which board their in, that have to do with Multiverser. It's a more elegant way to handle things and allows for an organic growth of topics.

That's all I can think of right now. Ask questions here and I'll answer them.
