Shawn's last post is at the end of King Shawn Arises in the archives. He long ago saved the throne of Ruritania for his near duplicate King Shawn (avoiding the masquerade usually pursued toward this end), was installed as Count of Zenda, and began preparing for the major political events of the upcoming twentieth century. He has fortified the borders of this little Germanic state against the expansionist interests of Bismarck and Kaiser Wilhelm, trained what may be the first modern special forces units, and made a deal with the future manufacturers of his own semi-automatic pistol for the production of similar pistols, while buying the best military supplies and support mostly from England. He has also taken steps to support the Russian monarchs Nikolaj and Alexandra and to bolster the Russian economy against the Bolshevik revolution. He is currently at a ball at the Ruritanian palace in Strelsau, where he is in conversation with the Duke of Kent, second son of the English monarch. In continuing that conversation, he wrote:

Well,

"It's oddly complicated.

You see, my family tells a story whereby five generations ago my very removed grandparents, Mother's side, immigrated from Ruritania to Britain due to some land title they had been granted near Gloucestershire.

My Father's side were lesser nobility from Italy, specifically from the Milan area.

As you know, that's about the same time that nobles began to have to sell off bits of property, titles, etc to keep the lifestyle they were accustomed to, and both sides of my family immigrated to America to seek the fortunes and prosperity that is always promised by that place. It was several generations before my parents were born, met and married - but I have always been facinated by Europe and my family heritage.

As soon as I was comfortable enough to do so, I sold my business and moved to Europe to live the life of a mercenary and perhaps idle gentleman. Thus I was surprised when on a cassual hunting trip to Ruritania I found a man related to my mother -and that man happened to be the King of Ruritania.

I had no idea really, but I am pleased to have tracked down at least one part of my family.

By the way, your party would be welcome at Zenda to observe a demonstration of both the Beretta and my military preparations if that would please you."

"Indeed! But, you are entertaining Her Majesty the Czarina at present, and it would be too much to impose upon you at the present time, I think--although I would love to see what you have done, when the time is better for you."

Kyler was last playing in Kyler in a New City, which was filled with superheroes and supervillains. He got a job, got in a few scraps with some villains, and is now trying to enroll in school.

My last comment there was:

Actually, Saka has to get to work. She told them she would be late, because she needed to help you register for school, but she figures you'll be all right getting home from here (she does ask, but it's pretty obvious to both of you that her presence with you is not protector so much as partner). So if it's all right with you, she'll catch a bus to work and let you get home on your own.

--M. J. Young

Pick up from there.

Alice has never seen anything related to superheroes or supervillains, or any fiction about nuclear war or tensions that might lead to nuclear war, or stories about what might happen in the future. She is puzzled at the idea that something like this would be entertainment, and wants to know if it's a children's history book in another universe.

This is the reaction he has gotten from his hostess, a waitress named Alice, to the famed graphic novel The Watchmen. I will ask him to fill in other details as we progress.

Once his long-overdue play summary is finished and posted, this thread will continue Paul's game from Omega Academy. He'll be writing it, or at least most of it, but I've gone ahead and saved him the trouble of starting the thread for his new world. When his story reaches the point of his demise at the tentacles of a sentient cephalopod of mysterious origins, he'll link to this thread and continue the story here.

This continues my game summaries from Six is Better than Seven, and takes us to my current world. I should be seeing Scott soon, so expect another summary before online play.

I woke up in a field of some wheat based crop. I stood up and looked around, realizing I was on farm land, with farm house nearby. I went over to check it out, and heard a dog whimpering under the porch. Going in to the farmhouse, I looked for food to try and coax the dog out, after trying and failing to do so with normal means. I found, on the kitchen table, an uneaten meal. I grabbed the porkchop, sufficiently scared at this point, and was about to go outside when I was confronted with a skeleton. I dropped the porkchop (and a werelight I had summoned) and began to attack it. When I destroyed the first and discovered the second, I decided to invent a magic spell that bathed me in holy light, causing damage to the undead (a 9@2 create light with a 1@something torture spirt incorrporated in, 1@10 I think). I demolished the skeletons, discovered the torn up corpses of the children of the farm house, and left with much haste, dog in tow. I traveled for a while, created a magic spell to talk to the dog, and walked for most of two days or so.

Rain plagued me, I ran into the dog's original owner, and arrived in a cross-roads town. I found the inn and used my rings as collateral for a night's rest and food. In the morning, I went to the silversmith and exchanged one of my rings for paper money, paid the innkeeper and got my other ring back. On the advice of the silversmith, I went to the church and waited till the father showed up. When he did, I asked if I could work for him. He allowed me and gave me a quick run down of what I'd do, mostly involving cleaning. On each Moon Day I was to ring the bell (the next one was in 3 days). I began cleaning the chapel and the gravestones, stomping down the grave dirt as was asked. I went and ate dinner with the silversmith, Johnson, that I had met before. I told him that my family had been attacked by the undead, and that the neighbors decided it was best to use fire to deal with them. This got very interesting responses. They were very quiet about it and immediately changed the subject.

That night, I was woken up by something (or was just about to fall asleep) when I noticed lights in the graveyard. I went up to the bell tower and looked out on the graveyard. I saw a few shambling people and assumed the worst. I ran downstairs and outside, and then something horrible happened. I tried to use my holy light spell and botched, calling to Jared and Jamaal instead of Bah Tor. Therefore, every corpse in the graveyard rose in an eerie blue light. I ran inside and up to the bell tower and saw as they formed a giant crescent, the symbol of the anarch gods, and began to talk to each other (well, those that could make noise did at least).

The exciting conclusion when I feel like updating it!

WilliamTWodium on "Dragons Welcome: James in a new world"

This thread continues the adventures of James Marsh, lately of Simian Circus: James joins the game. The transition from that world was made during live play, so I'll continue the summary here.

When James came to (after a dream-like experience which I won't attempt to recreate), he found himself lying on his back in a dank, rocky place, most likely a cave or cavern of some kind, in near-total darkness. Near-total, thanks to the great green slitted eyes, each the size of his face, which gleamed at him reflectively from the dimness. In their light he could just make out a scaly sort of snout - which might perhaps explain the alternating drafts he'd been feeling across his body, first warm, then chill.

As he sat up, there was slight motion from the direction of the head and eyes. A great voice rumbled out from the darkness, deep and contented and patient, each syllable enunciated with a connoisseur's relish:

"Ah, you're awake. How . . . wonderful."

___
James, if you have anything to add or any questions to ask, now's a good time. Otherwise - your move, slick.

You feel the blast above you, crushing you into the ground; then there is an abrupt hush, and you hear birds--not tropical birds, but song birds, woodland, not jungle, creatures.

You are groggy, but already have the sense that points you to Horus, this time pointing in two directions, and the sense that points you to your equipment in one of those.

Ahmetia Campbell played in a new game at Ubercon (somehow everyone thought that I would simply take over her game from Harry in the middle of a world, which I was not going to do). A lot has happened to her, in part because as memory serves she played Friday night, Saturday morning, and Sunday midday, so probably got in more table time than anyone else.

That means she's got quite a bit of summary to write, or at least might have. I'm eager to read it, for many reasons, including that it gives me feedback on what parts of the game were truly memorable for the players involved.

Welcome to Multiverser.

This thread has been set up to walk you through the process of creating a character. You can post your responses here, or open a new thread, as you prefer.

Let me emphasize for clarity that you will be playing yourself, that is, starting as a version of yourself, a character derived entirely from who you are right now, what you can do, what you own and carry. Do not give me the description of some fantasy or science fiction character you want to be. You can become that character over time, if that is your objective, but it's much more interesting to start as yourself.

There will be three posts below. Please answer them one at a time, in separate posts, and be prepared to answer questions. I would rather these were done on separate days, because there are already plenty of people playing, and I need time to digest and copy your materials in addition to running their games.

This is a slightly modified version of our On-the-Fly character generation system--modified to work better in forum play. It creates an incomplete character, on the assumption that it hits all the important points and the details will be added as needed during play.

The story picks up from a thread on the old board, with a few revisions to the character detailed in Welcome Back Nikolaj.

To recap briefly, Nikolaj was in Columbus, Ohio, when Godzilla came through. He remained in the hotel, which was undamaged by the monster passing through the city. Then there was an unexplained explosion, and he blacked out.

You are now returning to consciousness. There is a momentary ache in your body, but it passes. You hear nature sounds--something that might be a bird, although it might be a monkey for all you know about animal sounds. You also hear a slow rhythmic thudding which periodically loses the beat, offset against another percussive beat of a slightly different pitch and speed, and a sound--a sound of sawing, perhaps.

You are lying on a soft natural surface, on your back, eyes closed. The air around you smells heavily of vegetation and soil.

Nikolaj on "Kyler joins the Verse: The first tale."

So, I've decided, upon his own request, to run a game for Kyler. It makes me feel like I can do something back for the Forum, since they are running me in two games already. I can do more then give ideas now, anyway. I'll try to make this my first successful game mastering experience. Without having a rulebook. So I'll be asking mechanics clarifications a lot.

I like to make stories, but we are with two that write this story, so Kyler, what do you want out of this? What kinds of stories do you like?

Also, since you are the main character, I'll need to know a bit about you, relevant to the story. If you could summarize yourself in one paragraph, what would it read like? Mainly in terms of character/drives/attitude. I think your physical description is on your character sheet, right?

I know you have a recent character sheet floating around on the forums somewhere. If you know where, can you link me up here?

This said, I'm going to stretch the first death-scene and make it interactive. I've set some things that need to happen, but this will give us time to work things out character wise, so that I can decide where you should end up and what will happen there.

**********

It's your birthday and you get a present from your parents. You unwrap it. It's a brand new iPad. "It's a new experimental version.", your father tells you with a smile and a twinkle in his eye. "It just came out, and I know someone who knows someone, so I was able to get one before they were sold out."

It has WIFI, the box says. There are other symbols on it.

(I'm not sure whether you are an Apple fan or the opposite. If not, treat it as a counter version Microsoft made or something.)

You are awakening. You have a headache, but it is subsiding rapidly; there is a cool smooth object pressed against your hands, and you are lying on your back. The air is cool and the place relatively dark; you hear nature sounds around you, and smell grass and leaf mulch and possibly cherry blossoms.

You have a feeling that you left something somewhere, in "that" direction.

I realized in someone's thread that I had a really cool idea for a twist to toss his direction--but it would require me to know something about him, and I couldn't ask him outright without giving away the twist. It occurred to me, too, that I have wanted to know things about players in the past, and not been able to determine them easily. Thus I am starting a new set of sticky threads specifically to get personal details from people.

No you do not have to participate, but doing so will enhance the ability of your referee to run your game. And no, you do not have to answer all of the questions nor all of the threads to participate. I recognize that people do want a certain amount of privacy, and might not be comfortable posting personal details of their lives on the Internet. So post what you want, and leave the rest for guesses.

If you are not playing in a Multiverser game, this thread is not intended for you. If you wish to play, you should start with the threads Yes, You Can Play, But.... and The Character Generation Thread to begin your involvement, then come back to these threads to expand your identity.

This thread is about the might-have-beens of your personal relationships. Who were your friends, and particularly your potential "significant others", over the years, and what happened.

Because this area is so very personal, you are invited to be sketchy.

Questions to consider:

Are you married? How did you come together?

Who else did you date seriously? Did you ever think of marrying, or marrying someone else? What happened?

Who have your close friends been? What became of them?

How popular were you, when, and why?

I will begin.

This thread is about your ancestry. I am particularly interested in your national origin, or the blending of national origins that comprise your family. It would also be valuable to know if you have specific ancestors who might be well known, or who did something significant. Even trivial details might be useful at some point. Since it is possible for you to find yourself in a historic version of our world, it is possible for you to cross paths with your own ancestors, and that can also be interesting.

Questions to consider:

What is your national/subracial origin, in general terms, and how does it divide between your parents and grandparents? Where do you get these?

What is the national origin or your surname, that is, is your name originally English, or does it reflect a thread of your ancestors from some other part of the world?

Do you have any famous ancestors who might show up in a history book somewhere?

Do you know what any of your specific ancestors did that was notable, or any of their professions?

Where did they live, and when did they migrate? Do you know what caused them to move to wherever you are?

This thread is about yourself and your family, and particularly the names that are connected to you. It will help in creating divergent selves, in that the referee can play with introducing other family members, or tweaking the family by adding or removing people (your great uncle Joe was killed in World War II, don't you remember?)

Questions to consider:

What else might you have been named? Do you know what names your parents considered for you, and why these were rejected?

What are the names of your parents, grandparents, uncles and aunts, the family names? If you are hesitant to include specific names, you can use descriptives such as "a very Italian ethnic surname" or "a popular given name among the Hispanic community" to give the flavor without revealing the identity.

Do you have siblings, and what are their names? Do you know what their names might have been?

If you are married, what is the name of your spouse? If you are "as good as married", what is the name of your "significant other"?

Do you have children, and what are their names? Are there stories behind these, or alternative names, such as the name for the son you never had?

For those who are no longer alive, when and how did they die? In particular, if you lost a young family member, this might be interesting if the death never happened.

Carol finally got you that laptop, and you were playing with it Christmas Eve. It's got this new Scriff Inside technology, which is supposed to make it super fast. Unfortunately, you spilled your drink into it (I know how much you hate electronic equipment), and got a worse shock than that time with the amplifier, and blacked out.

You are now waking up. You are on a cool relatively flat but uneven stone-like surface in warm darkness, lying on your back (with your eyes closed). There is the sound of people, but not too close to you.

What will you do? Be specific.

Aware that the ground has closed around you, you struggle for air, struggle against the pressure. With every move your body is buffeted by chunks of rock or lava. Thank whoever you thank, the rocks are not that hard and the lava not so hot, although some are harder than others. Some light is coming through now, and you can see the large bricks, rectangular boxes rounded on the edges and corners, pressing in on you.

He says it is headed "that way", which happens to be toward the human settlement, but also indicates that it changes direction and velocity both abruptly and erratically, so you should be ready to run or fly without notice.

It was suggested that it might be time to retire our previous mechanics thread, Behind the Screens 2008, so we did. And perhaps fittingly we've quite a group today for whom to do it--Kurt, Harry, Nikolaj, John 2, Adam, and Graeme all posting.

Oddly, Kurt does not identify himself to the operator; but then, it's entirely likely that agents sometimes cannot do so, so they probably have provision for that.

Harry confused me--somehow he got to the patient's bedside, but I didn't see that happen. (That, incidentally, means that it hasn't happened yet, because we have to agree as to what's happening.)

Nikolaj rolls 50 on his medical diagnosis, but bandaging wounds is a 2@ bias level so he's got +5 for the difference in level, +1@1 SAL, +2@1 BRA, +2x5@ world tech bias--that's 47, not successful here. More significantly, he's going to have to give some sort of account of himself.

John 2 rolls 49 on a skill learning attempt for the use of the laser blaster. He's got the advantage of Derek's 1@8 teaching SAL, 2@6 example, and 2@3 tech BRA, so that's a success on a 1@1 Use Laser Blaster T12@1 (borrowed from Derek Brown) skill. He's getting a bit impatient about the teacher; don't worry, the teacher is coming. Let's first get a few skills under his belt. Next time I'll roll skill advancement checks for him.

Geneice rolls 66 on her emergency teleport skill, and so bounces back to the grove. I think that's the first time she's used it from beyond sight of the grove (it was learned by designing it locally, at a 1@3 SAL for her), so we'll call it new use and give her 1@4. Hey, I couldn't resist--and anyway the code was Adam's idea.

Graeme is going to attempt to copy an Azmayincan spell. This should be interesting, as I didn't really put too much effort into creating the spell and have no idea how the numbers play. But I can see what he's doing and have a pretty good idea of how I designed the skill on the fly, so let's crunch some numbers. Oh, but I have some questions to which I will need answers.

Hopefully that won't delay the game too long.

In his current game thread, Maxx botched on a very unusual skill check. The skill reads:

1@3 Meditation P1@0 one minute of mind relaxation gives +RS/10 to immediately subsequent psionic skill attempt, touching hand to head for focus gives +5SM

He was doing it to help him learn a new skill, one that has been giving him trouble for months, the ability to use his tactile sense to enhance auditory information. But he didn't botch on the new skill--he botched on the meditation.

Making a botch list worked well last time, so we're going to do it again. This is a very minor skill, though--no power is released in his meditation, so we can't have explosions directly. But here are some thoughts to get the ball rolling:

Falls asleep.

Catatonic state.

Pass through: the skill learning attempt botches (which means we need another botch list).

Reverse effect: -10 penalty on skill learning attempt.

Psionic shutdown: relaxes his psionic abilities into non-responsiveness for a while.

So, what are your thoughts?

M. J. Young on "The Lauren Should Have Been Blind Fight"

John "A1Nut" Cross is rather upset about the fact that when he sparred with Lauren Hastings in the dark so that he could practice his Blind Fighting skill, she used her psionic Intensify Senses skill, and so could see better than she could. The matter has appeared several times since he, as player, knew that it happened that way, but he only found a legitimate means of raising the issue in play when his character was being taught the Intensify Senses skill and so guessed that she had used it in the previous combat.

I am copying posts here from two threads, Behind the Screens 2008 page 14, and John Cross in TerraTerraTerraNova page 13.

From the first, John, quoting me:

How is what you do different from what Daredevil does, but that he is so much better at it?

Because if you're quiet, Daredevil can't see you at all. MJ, I know you know what I'm talking about. There is no way on God's green earth that you can tell me that being able to see is not an advantage over being able to hear location.

Answered by Harry:

Actually, Daredevil can hear you even if you're perfectly quiet, by hearing sound bouncing off of you, unless you are sound-deadening yourself. You can tell that in the fact that he can see terrain features, things like subway pillars and such. /Perfect/ echolocation like that isn't much of a step down, except that you can't read in echolocation.

To which John responded:

Yeah, but the fact remains that my character went into it believing that Lauren was also blind like he was. She wasn't. She lied by omission.

In response to some excellent observations that echolocation is superior to vision in some ways, he wrote:

Yeah, but a sighted person can also hear every direction.

Then, from the other thread, he produced an angry tirade, from which:

How many times do I have to say the same thing before it sinks through that THICK skull of yours? My character went into it under the impression that Lauren was BLIND. BLIND, unable to see. Without vision. She could SEE. She was not BLIND.

THAT'S ALL THAT MATTERS!!!!!!

Whatever other skills were used by anyone are BESIDE THE POINT!!!!!!!!

LAUREN WAS NOT BLIND!!!!!!!!!! She could SEE!!!!!!!

WHATEVER OTHER SKILLS USED ARE COMPLETELY IRRELEVANT!!!!!!!!

He had the impression that she was unable to see. She could see. Therefore, that's lying by omission. I CLEARLY STATED to her right up front that I was practicing a sightless skill. Point me to the part where she makes a similar declaration to him.

Found it yet? No? Oh maybe that's because IT ISN'T THERE!!!!!!!!!!!

She NEVER STATED that she could SEE!!!!!!!!

She NEVER STATED what skill she was using in the dark PERIOD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

THEREFORE SHE LIED BY OMISSION!!!!!!!!!!

HOW MANY TIMES DO I HAVE TO SAY THIS BEFORE IT SINKS IN?????????????????????????????????????

I think he is justified in his anger over it, and your PATHETIC ATTEMPTS to justify her behavior only serve to show that you haven't paid a lick of attention to ANYTHING I'VE SAID!!!!!!!!!!

The fight in question begins in his game thread on Sunday, June 28, page 8 and continues for some time interspersed with out-of-combat actions. The corresponding Behind-the-Screens post begin on page 10 of that thread.

If we're discussing what she omitted mentioning, I think we can include several skills which she used but did not mention that she would be using, including:

Handspring, which she used to follow him when he attempted to surprise her by using the Great Jump he never mentioned, either.

Force Shield, a psionic defense against his violent charge.

Evasive Tumbling, to move away from his attack.

I have noticed several skills he used that he did not mention to her, as well, including the fact that he developed at least one (maybe two) during that combat. So I have no problem with the fact that she did not mention her ability to see in the dark.

Then again, I find that she did mention it, because right at the beginning of the fight he asked her:

Lauren, how well can you see? I'm blind as a bat, so seriously, take it easy on me.

...and she answered him telepathically:

John, I've spent centuries fighting vampires. If I couldn't see in the dark, I would not have fared near so well as I have.

Further, you indicated that you were dimming the lights, but complete darkness is not attainable in the rooms where you practice, so it comes to the level of night vision someone has.

It is evident that we both forgot that she said that, because thereafter he was attempting to get her to say that she could see in the dark when she had already said it, and I was avoiding having her say it because it annoyed me that he was fishing for a way to bring out-of-character knowledge (something he got from behind the screens) into game play (as his character appeared to be unaware of it and trying to get her to tell him).

Nowhere in the thread, however, does John state that the point of the fight is for Lauren to be unable to see him, or tell her that it would be unfair for her to be able to see better than he can.

I would also note that if Lauren had the blind fighting skill he has, she would have gained it long enough ago (at least a couple centuries) and used it so extensively that it would have been among her 2@10 SAL skills; that means she still would have had the advantage of knowing exactly where he was better than he was able to tell where she was.

At the root of the matter, it always seemed to me that John hoped that turning off the lights would give him a combat advantage, such that he would finally be able to beat Lauren in what he could call a "fair" fight because his blind fighting gave him an advantage. Whether that advantage is "fair" or "unfair" is debatable; but it becomes "unfair" if he refuses to allow that she would use whatever skill she would normally use to fight under the same circumstances. Lauren has never developed a Fighting Blind skill precisely because she has ways to overcome the blindness created by darkness, and has never had to deal with any other type of blindness.

Besides, the real benefit of the fighting blind skill arises when you are blinded and your opponent is not--when someone throws dirt in your eyes, or uses a blinding attack that temporarily negates your vision, or, as in this case, is quite able to see under conditions under which you cannot.

John, you got your new use for the skill, which was your player objective. What you did not get was the satisfaction of defeating a clearly superior unarmed combatant by using a trick she did not know, and that because she used a trick you did not know she knew.

The thread is open for discussion, but I think I've made my position clear enough.

Hopefully Graeme will find his way to the new forum location. He was in Rome, in Rome Wasn't Built In a Millennium, talking to the zookeepers about his elephant. My last post there reads:

"Well, for one thing, she's smaller than any adult elephant I've seen. Also, the ears are wrong." He walks around her, studying her carefully. "Her tusks are awfully small, her face is deformed by those bumps, the tip of her trunk doesn't look right--and the trunk's not wrinkled properly--and her back is bent the wrong way. Her legs are short and fat, and she's got the wrong number of toenails. Oh, and her color is pretty bad. Is she sick, or is she a mutant or something?"

--M. J. Young

I'm eager to see how he will handle this anomaly.

This is the initial game thread for Robert Marsh. Character generation took place offline (following the steps outlined in the first four posts of The Character Generation Thread), and play began live.

During his vacation at the beach this summer, accidental damage to his cousin's newfangled GPS led to Robert receiving a nasty shock and blacking out. He awoke at night, flat on his back on a plain of orange grass smelling of tangerines (and perhaps celery), looking up at an octagonal full moon. To his right was the odd skyline of a distant, lightless city; to his left, a small box-like object; ahead, strange silhouettes suggesting a massive industrial complex, complete with occasional motion and periodic flashes of light. Scattered around him were random items he'd taken with him to the beach house, and he had an oddly-directional feeling that he'd left something else somewhere, over "that way," behind and to his right.

Gathering his things, he headed left towards the boxy object. On his way, he observed several odd creatures: small herds of grazing, eyed Nerf balls, green clams the size of Volkswagons, a short rootless vine which tried to strangle him (but which he eventually shed and escaped). After seeming hours of travel, he slept.

Awakening at dawn, he found that the bush-like things made from black coral he had observed previously were now no longer static, but rather moved erratically across the plain. Continuing his journey, he discovered the hard way that they became hostile if he approached too closely, acquiring two holes in his clothing and a nasty third-degree burn on his right hand in the process.

After a harrowing evasive trek, he finally arrived at his destination - an abandoned mobile home. Finding the bathroom window unlocked, he made his way inside. So far discoveries include:

two cans beans,
one package twinkies,
the keys (engine won't start),
a roadmap for Nebraska,
a radio with apparently still-functioning batteries

On this last, he has been able to get reception on several channels. So far, all have been speech (not music) in very foreign tongues. The voices are quite strange; there appear to be two kinds of voices and at least two languages, with each voice-language pairing so far segregated onto its own set of channels.
__

Robert, I believe we left you sitting in the drivers seat, turning the keys uselessly. Unless you have information to add to the summary or questions about something that I left out or that needs clarifying, we can pick up with your actions from there.

It seemed to me good to start a new thread; after all, the old one was getting pretty long. Anyone who needs to reference it can find it as Behind the Screens Continues, and can get to the last game-related post here.

Happy New Year; John 4, Max, John 2, and Adam are the guests at today's party.

John 4 adds 12 pairs of drum sticks to his equipment. I, knowing his penchant for percussion, am allowing it without a roll, as I cannot really imagine him going anywhere without them. I'm surprised they weren't in the back pocket of his pajamas. He also looks for his dog, who is on his equipment list, and she will be sleeping beside him.

Max is making some solid preparations for his upcoming meeting. We'll fill in a few blanks on that.

John 2 has inspired a new thread on holy magic botches, and is now praying. On examination, I conclude that the prayer is a M2@4 Cure Disease, capable of curing multiple diseases. There is a baseline of ten minutes, and he has specified "a few minutes", which I usually take as a number between three and seven, so I'll call it 5:00, and take -10 from the chance of success. I'm also not happy that he's curing multiple diseases, but I'll only take -5 for that. He gets +5 for appropriateness, +2 for sound necessary, +15 for total physical involvement, and I believe I gave him a bonus for limiting a prayer to his room previously, +10 for that. This makes the skill's inherent sit-mod -10-5+5+2+15+10=+17, and he has the +10 alliance bonus and his own +9 for religion, a 1@4 mag bias, and a 2@2 BRA. That means +17+10+9+22-24=34% chance of success. The roll is 11, which is a decent success. To consolidate, the description is 1@1 Cure Diseases M+2@4 retire to personal room or quarters, kneel with total body involvement, pray with appropriate words for healing of specified ailments, sound necessary, 5:00TF, +17SM.

Adam is getting oriented to the new surroundings. This will be fascinating.

I am very pleased to have Nikolaj returning to our game.

I suppose the joke of it is that earlier this month I moved his character information to the inactive file--one of the very few people I thought were unlikely to return, and I needed a column near Scott to start listing information on Alice and one near John Cross to start saving stuff on Terry. But it is easily restored, even if I am not completely certain of the original order in which they joined the game.

Nikolaj and I have corresponded on this a bit last week; I apologize again that this has been an incredibly hectic week and I have been unable to move forward with anything. This is an unusual circumstance, so we're going to resolve it with an unusual solution. Nikolaj is going to be presumed to be starting now, as of today, but to have been in the B Monster Movie world in which he began. The actions I had his character do (which were relatively minor, as I recall) will remain his actions, he will fill in a few gaps, and he will begin in a new world--but he will begin as the person he is now, a bit older than he was.

Because he is not exactly the same person, I am posting his character sheet here and he is going to make a few edits. He is permitted to add skills and equipment which he has acquired since he started last time. I hope he will delete items which 1) he no longer has and 2) he did not use already in the game.

Also, Nikolaj, at the bottom of the list is $70,000 in B Monster Movie World cash and "$2000 in hundreds B Monster Movie World from Nikolaj"--I just copied it to each character who got it, including you. You would have had that money for a few days, during which time you were to use the $2000 to purchase whatever you thought would be valuable to you as a verser. As I mentioned in my e-mail, I believe your companions invested it in precious metals and gems and jewelry, which they guessed would be reasonably negotiable in other universes. I will remind you that when you verse out you will have a 220 pound (roughly 110 kilograms) weight limit on any equipment not actually on person (worn or carried such as in pockets or a backpack or duffel you are actually holding/wearing). With that in mind, you may use your money to acquire anything which ought to be reasonably available in that world. I think that dollars and Euros are fairly close to each other in value most of the time, but if that doesn't give you a ballpark figure on how much it is try any currency conversion site on the web.

Here is the sheet as it currently reads:

Name	Nikolaj Ernst Germaine Frederica Bourguignon
a.k.a.	Nico: Not preferred, but endured as allmost everyone shortens it to that.
Bouddi/Bourgui: Shortening/alteration of family name used at highschool by teachers and students.
Denolaj: Last used and most preferred nickname from highschool. Also used in altered form by my mother and brother when in a good and loose mood (nolajke). Also used in my e-mail adress as can be seen.
Meneerke: Used by one person at work. It is a familiarised form of the word mister in flemish. Translated it would meen little mister, but it has not that official ring to it. It's dialect as well.

What did you not take with you when you pursued the demons, which is still yours?

The surface beneath you is flat, level, and smooth--unnaturally so, like a floor. Yet it is not so hard as a floor, more like a mat; but it does not give so much as a mat.

You are lying on your back in a space that is comfortably cool and dark, but not completely dark, with a bit of an echo. The echo has the sound of what might be people milling about, but not immediately at hand.

Kurt, you were given a new toy--a high speed electronic Latin/English lexicon with a little "Scriff Inside" logo on it.

You were playing with it in the bath, and dropped it in the water. Snatching it out, you got a nasty shock, and blacked out.

You are now awakening. The air is warm, and it is very bright; you are lying on your back on a soft surface which is unlike carpet, and there is white noise pulsing in the background. You are supine, eyes closed. There is a familiar but out-of-place smell in the air.

This thread continues Paul's game from the archived thread Fifteen Minutes. I'm reprinting his last post here.

I would like to spend a little bit of time each day exploring the uses and functions of my pocter. I ask around and try to find access to a piano. If I find one, I attept to look up online lessons for Jazz theory, and chord theory on my pocter. If there is a music class offered at the academy, I ask the teacher friendliest to me how I would go about being transferred into it, or adding it to my schedule somehow.

I don't spend as much time as I should studying. However, I do spend a considerable time studying, because the work is so challenging. I try to get at least 6 hours of sleep a night, but knowing me, I probably only succeed about every other night.

I contact General Hu sometime, and ask about how long my school year is. (He mentioned earlier that it was decided by the parent or guardian of each student.)

We'll assume that you're poking around on the pocter each day, and anytime you want to attempt something in particular we'll make a skill roll (sit-modded, of course).

Regarding the piano: among whom are you "asking around," what sort of piano are you looking for, and where might you expect one to be? Are you doing this in the afternoon today, or are you waiting until tomorrow?

I only vaguely recall Hu's comment; I imagine it had something to do with how many semesters per year a student choses to enroll. School is held year-round; vacations are taken by neglecting to sign up for classes. The current semester ends in mid-December, if that's what you're asking.

What do people do for fun around here?

How do you intend to go about finding out?

This is the initial game thread for Graham Horton (not to be confused with his nephew Graham Bryden, currently in play at Through Hell and Bah'k). Character generation took place offline following the steps outlined in the first four posts of The Character Generation Thread; I can post the sheet upon spectator request, but the most recent copies will be on referee and player hard drives.

Graham, on your nephews' recent visit (during which Multiverser was never mentioned, because it does not exist; for any memories involving it, substitute Champions), little Graham brought with him an especially new-fangled PS2 peripheral. However, it must have suffered some damage during transit -- otherwise, it would never have broken in your hands in the middle of Guitar Hero, no matter how vigorous your solo. Inspecting the damage, you notice a golden mercury-like liquid leaking out of the device onto your fingers. You receive a short sharp shock and black out.

_____

You're beginning to come to. Even with your eyes closed you can tell you've been moved – you're outside, and the air is chill and damp. You're lying on a slight slope with your feet downhill, and the surface beneath your back is soft and wet. The air smells like grass and dew, and from the way your clothes have soaked through, you've been lying here a while.

There's a slight soreness in your hand, but other than that the pain is gone.

We had just finished summarizing the live-play introduction of James Marsh in the archived thread, Planet of the 'Panzees. I'll reprint my last post here.

Superbly summarized. Mentions have also been made (alliteration aside) that you'll probably want to talk with Old Gunther. At least two individuals have said this independently of each other (once on the road and once in the wagon), apparently when the subject has come around to idea of you traveling with the chimps for a little while. You have not seen or been introduced to Gunter as far as you know.

I've forgotten all the names but one (Tom's), so I'll make them up again now unless you remember them yourself. We'll call the lady chimp who took you from the road into the wagon Rose; she's also the one who did you the favor of changing the subject away from your origin and back to the story that was being told before you arrived. The orangutan's name is Tom, and he apparently managed to track down and capture the ne'er-do-well tinkerer by means a steam-beetle and "Geiger's new device," despite having broken both of his legs in the fall from the balloon and spending the final week of the chase laid up in a hotel. He still received credit for the capture, however, and consequently got a share of the reward money. "And that's how I got this hat, Nathan: reward money."

That's as far as we got. Before I push on, do you have any questions, clarifications, or immediate actions? The attention in the wagon is off of you, for the most part, so unless you get involved in the conversation or otherwise draw attention to yourself you need not interact with your companions if you don't want to. There's no telling how long the ride will be, but it's currently early afternoon. Your bag and blowtorch, as you noted, are with you. The sense that you left something somewhere points generally in the wagon train's direction of travel.

There are indeed trees lining both sides of the road on which you are standing; the road passes in a straight line through them, but in the darkness you cannot see as far as you could normally shoot. The light is like moonlight on the road, but the trees overarch it in places creating dark shadows. The leaves reflect the light brightly.

Kyler, my game just started. I versed in, it was raining, I found 2 or 3 of the jumpsuits and put them on, along with shoes and socks. I'm currently trying to find my equipment. I asked for a GE roll on finding the 14 inch knife with the fishing line and fire starter. Hopefully everything will work for you now, so we can play.

You were at work yesterday, and someone in the computer department handed you a box. "It's a new user-friendly interface," he says. "Supposed to be the latest thing, has this Scriff Inside label on it. See what you can make of it, and bring it back when you know something. The state is donating a bunch of these for our students in the handicapped classes."

It hooks up easily enough to your computer once you get it home and out of the box, and it is easy to operate and very quick on the response. After you've played with it a bit, though, you knock over your coffee, which spills into the gadget. You get an unexpected shock, and black out.

You are now awakening. There is the sound of echoey voices from somewhere, as if perhaps from a hall outside a room. It is cool, but not cold; the surface beneath you is smooth, more like a rubber wrestling mat than anything else you can imagine, but not as grabby as rubber. Your eyes are still closed, and you are lying on your back. What do you wish to do?

Ed Carroll has reappeared, so his game, in which Eric Ashley's character Tadeusz is making a guest appearance, is being revived here. He last posted in John II Is Not At Home, in which my last post reads:

I will mention for your attention that while you are in astral travel you are disconnected from your own body, so you are unaware of events surrounding it. You can counter this by setting up a remote clairsentience or sensory access port from your body to yourself, or if you're not worried about the body you can use a telepathic link to Ed to keep you in touch with things at his end. Those are all rather low concentration skills, so they won't seriously drain your ability, although they do open you to shock should something happen at the other end.

Ed, it appears that you have your bombs.

This is the first game post for Andrew James Pessarchick, whose character information is in The Character Generation Thread.

One of your buddies caught up with you and gave you a gadget he said you should try. It looks like some sort of USB plug-in drive, but he says it's faster than anything he's ever seen--something about "Scriff Inside" technology. You take it home and try it, and the thing is incredibly fast.

However, when you try to remove it from the port, you slip, and the drive breaks. There is a flash, and a surprisingly severe shock. The next thing you know, you are regaining consciousness, which is how you know you blacked out.

You are lying on your back with your eyes closed. You are immediately aware that you cannot possibly be where you were--there is bright, warm light shining on you, the sound of surf, and the surface beneath you is slightly sloped down toward your feet, somewhat conformed to the contours of your back, and almost hot.

This thread continues Graham's game from Really Bad Eggs, where we finally caught the summary up to the point where he was shot in the back of the head with a silver bullet; this takes us into Graham's fifth world.

We join our hero atop a small hill buried in deep snow. He's just finished gathering his local belongings, which include the usual contents of his pockets, his glasses, and his spiked helmet. (I've sent the most recent copy of your character sheet. Anything not on it is elsewhere.)

It's cold. You're dressed in your leather boots, wool uniform pants, and brass helmet. Last you saw your shirt and jacket, they were stuffed under a fallen log on a tropical island. Thoughts, actions?

I am going to begin by expressing my gratitude to Aaron, Jacob, and Dutch for recognizing our need to have our own official forum, and providing this so promptly.

I've a lot of work to do, as I need to identify which game threads should be considered active, and get those restarted on this forum. In fairness, I am going to begin by relaunching those games which had posts on the old forum before it closed, oldest to newest, and then work backwards through those threads which have been inactive since then, newest to oldest. If your game thread is not here, please feel free to restart your game from wherever it ended. I mean no slight and am not unilaterally terminating anyone's game; it might be that I thought you had dropped out of play, or it might be that I missed your thread when I was looking back. In either case, you are welcome to post again here.

For those who need to find their old threads, the archives of the Multiverser forum are at http://discussions.gamingoutpost.com/index.php?showforum=83 and should be openly accessible to anyone. You cannot post, but if you log in to your old account the unread posts markers are fixed to your last visit (and will not, apparently, update for your new visit). The old Behind the Screens at a March Pace thread is here, and I will include links (if I remember to do so) in each new thread to connect to the archives of their previous play.

I'm guessing on the coding to be used here; it appears that HTML is accepted, but I suspect that not all of it will be accepted, so we'll see what does and does not work as we go along and hope that the edit button actually does work on the new system.

Answering the few questions asked on that thread before it closed:

Yes, John, it is because of the e-mail. Long ago I did everything every day, and it took forever to get through it all. I noticed that when I was involved in any discussion every day (be it by e-mail or by forum) I wrote a lot more in that discussion and put a lot more time into it. With e-mail, if I put an answer off a day or two, it slowed down the conversation and took less of my time; with forums, time away meant someone else would often answer a question adequately before I returned. Thus I sequestered the major forums in which I participated (but not the official forum site) into one day per week, arranged on alternate days, and put the e-mail between. However, as it happened I always did the e-mail first, then came here, then went to the other forums, so when I sliced down the workload I still did e-mail before Gaming Outpost and other forums after, which meant that on e-mail days Gaming Outpost was at the end of the day and on forum days it was at the beginning.

Scott, I look forward to your next post.

Shawn, I have not heard from Graeme since his last post here; however, he sometimes gets called away abruptly on business and does not have Internet access or time for extended stretches. Oddly, he's an engineer without Internet access at home, so he only posts when he's got time elsewhere. I'm not yet worried about him.

That should be sufficient for that. Donna will be first, then Adam, then Shawn, and then I'll work backwards through the other players.

Donna continues from here. She needs a difficult persuasion check because she wants these children of the Englightenment to believe that she is a person of some supernatural power, but she does have the explosions in her favor so I'll bonus the effort by +3 on her effective persuasion, 1@9. The roll is 28, so it's not happening.

For the record, it appears that I can use blockquote as well as href link codes, and there is a note saying that ol and ul lists work as well as basic em, amd strong formatting codes, if I remembered it right.

Adam was last posted here. I'm copying the last post and responding to move things forward.

Shawn last posted here. There is a 16 GE roll on whether the Duke of Kent will come to Zenda (and since I don't know which Shawn would prefer, that makes it easy for me), so we'll go with yes and no.

That means it's time to launch threads for other people based on last posts. I will list them here and link them to their archived posts, as well as launch the new threads.

Anyone who is being run by another referee should arrange with that person for how to resume play here; if there are problems, drop me a note at mjyoung@mjyoung.net.
