John Cross was having trouble posting in Cross Out a New World, John, so we have moved the game here.

Since his post did not take, I will await his response to my last post there in this thread.

M. J. Young on "Opinion Survey: Gems on Asteroids?"

John Cross asked in his thread whether there were gems in the scrap dealer's shop that came from asteroid mining.

Now, the question of whether there are gems there is easy enough to address; but it occurs to me that the other question, whether these might have come from asteroid mining, is an intriguing one, and I'd like some feedback--particularly from Graeme and Eric, but from anyone else who thinks they have an argument one way or another.

My impression is that most gemstones come from compressed carbon deposits, and that most carbon deposits come from decaying organics. That means that we have the sequence of planetary life-->decay-->carbon formation-->compression-->gemstones. It also means that you can't have gemstones of the sort John wants unless you started at some point with life on a planet that somehow broke into asteroids.

I'm specifically thinking of carbon tetrahedrons--diamonds, rubys, emeralds, most of the more valuable clear faceted stones seem to me to be in this category. Of course, I could be wrong on this--generalist, you know, nothing is my field. However, given my thoughts on the matter, I'm inclined to think that there would not be stones of this sort in asteroids, unless our asteroids have a very unusual history.

What do others think?

This picks up Andrew's Multiverser game from Andrew on the Island

Someone is nudging you; you realize that you are asleep, and that your lungs hurt--but this is not the grass, nor the uneven slope of the mountain, but a soft floor.

The words come through. "Hey, buddy, are you all right?"

You gasp in a breat of fresh air, and the pain vanishes from your lungs.
