M. J. Young on "Move Topic Function?"

I've glanced over it, and in the end, I have to trust your judgment, but I'll give some sense of my priorities.

Don't lose existing threads; the ongoing games require that we look back at times to posts several years old.

Maintain links within the discussion forums; again, there are a lot of cross-linked threads that are part of the game.

Maintain an identifiable "Multiverser" forum. Although there are people at Valdron talking about establishing a new forum on our domain, I'm committed to continuing to support Gaming Outpost, and having our "official" forum here is part of that.

Maintain moderator functions as limited to select individuals as a separate group from administrator functions. This just seems obvious to me. I don't want to be an administrator, but I think my efforts as a moderator have been important, not just on the forums but also in the work I've done trying to get the old archived articles cleaned up and restored. But it shouldn't be possible for absolutely everyone who comes here to grab moderator functions, create their own groups (and exclude moderators from moderating them), and do whatever they want with them. That seems to be a recipe for chaos. (I'm not at all averse to having other authorized moderators; I just think that they should be approved by the administrators, not self-appointed.)

Some coding possible in forum posts, at least links and minimal text formatting, which make it much easier to locate information in threads.

Maintain present organizational categories in articles side, i.e., divisions into articles, blogs, and reviews.

It pops into my mind that I was wondering the other day about something else: whether there was an easy way to index article series beyond the use of the tags. That is, I'd like to be able to get a chronological list of Dreaming Out Loud or Game Ideas Unlimited without also getting everything else Seth or I ever contributed. I haven't tried using the tags for this, but then, I haven't gotten through all the articles to add tags yet, and there are quite a few recognizable series in the archives by quite a few authors.

(I should also ask whether the change would wipe out the tagging that has been done to this point. Although I wasn't planning more work on the archives this week, it would be a shame to put more time into it and have it all eliminated.)

Those are my thoughts at this point.

Thanks for all your work.

Max on "Move Topic Function?"

I think the way BuddyPress divide the group would probably mess with the forum structure because:

Instead of having a categorical, separated top-down list of forums, they are now fully integrated and attached to groups that can be created and controlled by any registered user.

That makes me wonder how you are going to divide each category. The admin control would be managed by the group admin by choosing to manage members of the created group which probably would be a little bit confusing for first time user.
The advantage of this is any registered user could be an admin, moderator or member of a group. A group admin also could kick/ban a user from the group. This probably need tweaking to prevent normal member from creating groups to avoid similar group being created which could cause confusion to other users. A new group would probably have to be created if the topic falls into another subcategory. This could lead to topic duplication from different group. This could be a problem because the plugin for merge or split topic is still in planning stage.
BuddyPress also does not have a default move topic function although the plugin for that can be downloaded.

It is good for social networking purposes such as a private messaging and private discussion group (such as referee group).

I think BuddyPress would be a good plugin if it is done separately from bbpress forum because it can let users communicate with each other more effectively. (This can be done but I am not sure if it will be bug free so before you do anything you probably want to backup the data just in case.)

These problems all seem to result from the integration of Wordpress (which handles the articles side of the site) and bbPress (which handles the discussions). They're supposed to play nice together, but they appear to not do it as well as we'd all like.

This has me thinking more about an option that I've been aware of for some time but haven't explored fully. Namely, the people behind both Wordpress and bbPress have developed a plugin for Wordpress called BuddyPress ( http://buddypress.org ). This plugin is designed to easily turn a plain installation of Wordpress (again, the software running the articles side of GO) into basically what we all use GO for: a social publishing and discussion site.

I've check and, because it's just a plugin, BuddyPress would maintain all the existing data and shouldn't even break links. The advantage is that, because it's a single item that's already integrated articles, blogs, and discussions, it won't have these various bugs we keep encountering when we try to hack together the articles stuff and the discussions stuff. This would (1) make GO easier on you guys because you wouldn't have all the bug craziness and (2) mean that adding in new features in the future will be easier for me because I won't have to deal with making them work across two systems.

But this would be a change -- though nowhere near as drastic as when we moved from our custom system to the current setup. And so it's something I want to discuss with the community before I do it. Poke around on the BuddyPress website (linked above), play with their demo, and let me know what you think. Is this something I should look into more? Is it worth doing to smooth out GO?

Aaron--it appears that the problem is broader.

What I find is that if I have logged in on the articles side (and not logged out again) I have no moderator powers on the discussions side. Logging in to the articles side appears to log me in on both sides, but prevents me from being a forum moderator. Logging out on that side logs me out of both sides, and then if I log in on the discussion side I have moderator powers; but I'm not logged in on the articles side in that case, and once I log in on that side I lose the moderator powers.

It's annoying--I had to go through a dozen hoops just to mark a couple of posts as "not spam", even though I could see them when I hit the "+# more" link.

I got the same error you did. I tried logging out and then back in and, once I did, I was able to move it to the RPG forum and then back to here without problem. I don't know why that would've fixed it, but it did for me at least.

Give it a try, let me know.

Aaron, I used to be able to pick up a thread and put it on a different forum; now when I attempt to do that, it always returns to the forum in which it was originally posted.

Is this a glitch in the latest upgrade or a change in moderator abilities or something else?

It's come to my attention, because John Cross is waiting for your reply to his thread Login Problems, but I have not been able to move it to the right forum.

I'm having trouble tracking down an archived game thread entitled Crazy Eights. If I do a search for posts by Blue Canary, I get most of his posts from it, but when I attempt to go from them to the thread I'm told I do not have permission to view that topic.

Is there any chance of restoring access to that thread, and is this a problem that is likely to appear with other threads?

Thanks.
