In John Cross' Multiverser game thread Cross Out a New World, John, I mentioned that there was a list of four hundred ninety-seven pizza toppings, and he said he wished he could see that.

Well, I'm wondering how many we can list.

Rules of the Thread:
1. Number your pizza toppings consecutively, so we can keep count.
2. List only toppings you have actually seen offered on pizza; you need not have tried them.
3. Combinations are only valid if they represent a single item. For example, "Ham" and "Pineapple" are both valid toppings, but since "Hawaiian" is just Ham and Pineapple, it does not count. On the other hand, "Ziti" is comprised of ricotta, mozzeralla, sauce, possibly meat, and macaroni, but it is a unique topping because these are combined into one thing and included as one thing.
4. If someone duplicates a topping, the first person to notice this should post that it was duplicated and correct the count.
I think that's sufficient. I'll start the list with the obvious:

I saw a news report about a girl that was obsessed with the Ninja Turtles. She would make any pizza she saw in the cartoon. On the show, she (The girl in the show) used

I don't recall the rest, but I think most of them were mentioned. Are we counting pizzas we've seen on TV, or just in real life?

Perhaps we should establish what constitutes a topping, do different kinds of sauces count? If so, the Donatos Chicken Veggie Medley uses

67) cheese-based white sauce, instead of the standard tomato-based sauce.

I remember I went to one fancy pizza shoppe in Atlanta during Dragoncon with J, and the pie tasted good enough, as long as you did not think of it as pizza. But I can't really remember the toppings.

I just saw a 'weird pizza' show on TV a few days ago.

They had the inventor of the BBQ chicken pizza on as well as some others.

Tad, your number 73 is a duplicate. MJ already mentioned spinach.

The other thing is that the pizza place my character called probably has 10 different kinds of sausage, 15 different kinds of pepperoni, 12 different kinds of ham, etc. So, that would make our list a bit more difficult.

I need to pick up a menu from a local pizza place that has some unusual pies (including the aforementioned Shrimp Scampi pie). I will bet that they have a few that have not yet been mentioned. However, this is not a good week for that, so keep thinking about what you've had on pizza.

I'm in a rush, but just yesterday I breezed through a farm market where on the wall there was a recipe for pizza with peaches on it.

So I think I'll add
The recipe said that you could substitute other fruit, but since a) it did not specify which other fruits were good for this and b) I have never encountered another fruit on pizza, I'm going to stick with what I can confirm--at this point.

There will be a second stage to this game, where we add to our toppings list those which might be found on pizza in a restaurant a thousand years in the future (staying within known foods), but let's finish the first stage first, identifying all the toppings we have actually encountered.

I showed the Ladyfaire this list, and she was impressed with our timewasting skills. One other timewaster, perhaps, is for us to plonk the tykes in front of the Food Channel instead of cartoons...they love it.

Oh, and if using garlic as the base for the sauce is distinct from 78, then we have:

Looks like garlic sauce should actually be 107, as peaches are 102 and 103.

Actually, that confused me at first, too. The point of putting "103) Peaches" was that I had put "102) Peaches" having overlooked "102) American Cheese".

So Garlic Sauce is 108.

And as we are now on Page 2 of this thread, the rules are going to expand a bit. The new rule: in the distant future, what else of foods which do exist now might make it on a list of pizza toppings?

It appears that a couple of them were not numbered, so the numbering has been corrected.

At this point, I want people to list other toppings you might never have seen but think you would eat if they were offered. That at least keeps it somewhat honest. I can imagine putting things on a pizza that I could not imagine eating on a pizza, but my list would be different from yours (I can't imagine eating anchovie pizza, but someone must eat it or it wouldn't be offered), so if you can imagine eating something on a pizza yourself, you can now add it to the list even if you've never seen it nor heard of it anywhere.

We might get our 497 toppings yet.

Since we already have the makings of dessert pizzas, with things like chocolate sauce, chocolate chips, and various flavors of pie filling, how about:

Just ate at Snappy's Pizza in my hometown, and saw Ranch Dressing, BBQ Sauce, and Meatballs. The first two are already gotten on the first list, and the third I'm not sure.

Meatball is #3; Ranch Dressing is 108; Barbecue Sauce is 72.

We can distinguish "blueberries" from "blueberry pie filling", so that counts.

As mentioned, Whipped Cream was #65 (on the corrected numbering).

Salmon is #91, Tuna #92.

Yes, I could see my kids eating a PB and J pizza.

137. Spaghetti Sauce (I may have used this on a homemade).

I'm not sure if this counts but differing crust flours count for me: Whole Wheat, Masa (corn meal), Potato flour, and Arrowroot flour. I'm allergic to gluten (aka wheat flour) so I'd be quite happy to find a reasonably priced pure corn meal pizza. One problem with things that are often labelled as corn meal is they often have wheat flour in them as well.

Tad, ya know, a PB and J pizza does sound pretty good. Mix the PB and J together to make the sauce, and top it with sliced fruit. That does sound tasty.

Bravo. Seeing the applications of some of these would be interesting indeed. Although at some point I think it's going to end up "Well what if one topping was another pizza?" and the list will spiral into infinity from there.
