The Creaker zombie reaches for you. You try to duck, but you're too slow. Its punch makes contact. Then it backs up and starts tap dancing. The creaking maddeningly loud. Bill and Ted jump up from their dead state "Nice knowing you duder!!!" They seem pretty happy for dead people. Then the world stops for a moment. Opening your eyes, you find yourself laying on grass. It's daytime. You notice right away that the air is far cleaner than anything you've inhaled for a while.

I'll stand up and shake my head a bit, then do a quick inventory and surrounding check. Make sure I have my guns on me and backpack on and look all around.

Campbell's guns were left behind. Everything else you had is on you.
Looking up, you're right next to a dirt road. It stretches as far as the eye can see in either direction. You're laying in a field next to a forest. The most interesting thing though is a sign that says "Tombstone 2 miles. Wyatt Earp sheriff."

This should fun, should try and blend in what little I can though, everything from my clothes to my guns will stick out.
Changing to jeans, black t-shirt, and hiking boots. Putting my holster on and pistols. They may not look normal, but maybe I'll be able to convince them it's new fangled stuff from New York. The 38 will be in my backpack. Putting my backpack on then and off to Tombstone it is.

Yeah, that's why my character keeps olive drab one piece jumpsuits in his survival pack. Neutral color, plain looking, won't really stick out anywhere.
Two miles later, you've in Tombstone. It's what you would expect of a Midwest frontier town. Bank, hotel, horse stables, bank, and of course the saloon and sheriff's station. Other stores of interest include a brothel, blacksmith shop, and a gun store. This last has a sign in front reading "Buy, sell, trade. Cash on the spot. Large selection of Colt firearms."
I should probably also mention that both the two 9mm pistols and the 38 revolver bear the Colt logo.

Well first things first is to check out the level of firearms. Going to go into the gun store.
Fri Oct 29 2010 3:57 am # -
Going into the gun store. They have on display a large selection of revolvers, lever action rifles and double barrel shotguns. The revolvers are available in 32, 38, 45, 50, and others. Many of the rifles are in the same calibers, and other larger calibers.
The store is decorated with numerous animal heads. Hunting trophies.
"Ken eye hep you?" says a balding, middle-aged man behind the counter.

"I was just looking for now, thank you. Just got into town."
The 38 revolver that is available is that the same as the one I have?
Am I correct in assuming there are no pistols like my 9mm's? Everything is still revolver and lever action rifles?
I'll look around for a bit and then excuse myself from the store.
I think the Sheriff's station is the next best stop. See if he's looking to hire any deputies, I'll be needing some time appropriate money.

In a fashion. Your 38 is 100 years more advanced. They do buy guns here as well as sell them.
Am I correct in assuming there are no pistols like my 9mm's? Everything is still revolver and lever action rifles?
That would be correct.
I think the Sheriff's station is the next best stop. See if he's looking to hire any deputies, I'll be needing some time appropriate money.
OK, I confess. I'm trying to railroad you. I know you don't have any money, however, you could sell the 38 and solve that problem. It's 100 years ahead of time, he would give you a really good price.

It's after an hour, so I'm posting again. All of the guns here are single action. You have to pull back the hammer before you fire. Your 38 is double action. You just pull the trigger. These guns are single load. A lever flips to the side, you remove and replace the bullets one at a time. Your 38 is open-cylinder. You can remove and replace all 6 bullets at once. Their guns are wooden handle. This one is rubber handle. He's never seen a rubber handle gun. What I'm trying to tell you is that you've got something incredibly valuable in your backpack, and you probably don't know enough about guns to realize that.
Reply quickly, this is mechanics.
Fri Oct 29 2010 4:49 pm # -
I actually did know enough about guns to realize that. But that you for the run down, I didn't realize the rubber handle difference. I'm not selling my 38 because it's the one that I can replace ammo for that will give me an advantage in a gunfight.
I know I could sell it for a lot, but getting money to buy ammo for it is a much better strategy in my opinion. Since I'm going to be new to any form of quickdraw I want a different way to discourage people trying to shoot me.
Still going to the sheriff's office without trying to sell the gun.
(I have two very viable job options here, which I potentially can handle simultaneously. If the sheriff is looking to deputize a few extra hands who are willing to help him out for a small amount per week awesome. Then there is the blacksmith, who I could probably demonstrate enough skill to to become his apprentice for the cost of room and board. Then I can start showing him all the tricks I know about metallurgy, which combined with his knowledge will raise that blacksmith shop way above any other around.)

The other thing you might not realize though is that you could sell the 38 for enough to buy a less-advanced, more powerful, period weapon, and still have a few bucks left over to get yourself started. It seemed like a really good idea to me, it's probably what I would do. You do what you want, I'm just giving my two cents.
Still going to the sheriff's office without trying to sell the gun.
I'm assuming I didn't persuade you.
GE 27, worst fears. What is it with you and bad GE rolls lately?
You go to the sheriff's office. Three men are sitting around. They're in the standard Clint Eastwood western sheriff getup. When you ask about the job, Wyatt's face goes red.
"Another one of you durn city sleeckers wants to be a sheriff??? Get outta muh office 'fore I run you outta town, boy!!!!"

The blacksmith, on the other hand, is willing to talk to you. He is looking to hire some extra help, if you can demonstrate an ability at metal.

Glantri, I must apologize if this is pissing you off. It's just another one of those little things that won't get out of my head. You could sell the 38, base damaging, for a 45 Colt, base lethal, replaceable ammo, really, almost as good of quality, just a little slower to reload. Also, I personally as a referee would give a positive sit-mod on a single-action weapon because the need to pull back the hammer makes the shots more accurate. AND!!!!!!! AND AND AND!!!!!! you would have enough cash left over for dinner and a few nights at a hotel. You would be getting, really, a better weapon and having some start-up cash. Really, I'm sorry, but I, personally, would be hopping all over it.

Did I get a mark on my metalurgy package from what I did to the garbage truck? I've never welded without assistance, or worked directly on a car before.
I'll look around the blacksmiths shop and look for what appears to be his next project. If it's the lining of a wooden wheel I'll make the next metal strip to go on that, if it's a set of 3 horseshoes I'll make a fourth, and so on. It'll demonstrate skill and also be useful to him.
1@5 Hard metalurgy Package, 1@6 if I got the mark I mentioned from above. Probably some sitmods from working in an actual blacksmith shop as opposed to making due with what's around.
As to selling the gun I'm not selling it, and I'll address what you said in the order you wrote:
1.I'm not pissed off, but it's not really the GM's place to tell the player what he should be doing or what the best course of action is.
2.I would prefer getting 6 damaging shots off before having to reload than 1 lethal shot and having to reload. In duel it's likely I might be dead or have killed the opponent before it comes down to reloading the 38.
3a.38 was one of the calibers listed, so I can get ammunition for it.
3b.If I get to be the blacksmiths apprentice then I can make ammunition easily enough, and I'll start making 9mm and using my pistols.
4.Adding a positive sit-mod for single action weapons makes no sense. Pulling back the hammer actually adds to the torque in the system, and your hand must calibrate for it, and that calibration won't be perfect. Dual action guns are designed to cock with the force going backwards as opposed to perpendicular to your arm. This causes it to not mess with your aim as much.
5.My major is the modern day progression of the blacksmith. I have worked metal, know the principle behind why it bends, and know hundreds of alloying treatments to make it stronger than anything this time period has probably seen. I doubt I'll have trouble getting an apprenticeship, which should get me enough money to eat and sleep.
6.I believe the 38 is better, and as such my character believes the 38 is better. I believe it is mathematically better as well, which is the only point you've disagreed with me about so far, and my character isn't even allowed to know there is a mathematical system to control this.Keeping the gun.

1.I'm not pissed off, but it's not really the GM's place to tell the player what he should be doing or what the best course of action is.
I understand. I was just speaking for myself. I'd take that deal in a heartbeat, but that's me, not you.
2.I would prefer getting 6 damaging shots off before having to reload than 1 lethal shot and having to reload. In duel it's likely I might be dead or have killed the opponent before it comes down to reloading the 38.
No, you would still have 6 shots. You just put them in one at a time instead of all 6 at once. If would just take you longer to reload after you fired your 6 shots. With a 45 Long Colt, if you need more than 6, either you're a terrible shot or there were 7 people there.
You've never fired a revolver, have you? Maybe that's what it looks like on paper, but in real life, cocking the hammer increases accuracy greatly. Pulling the trigger also pulls back the hammer. That increases the trigger pull, taking longer to fire, adding stress, and throwing the shot off. Cocking the hammer first, you just touch the trigger. The gun stays more steady in your hand, trigger pull is lighter, and the gun shoots straighter.
All of which is to say, you're right. It's not my place to tell you what to do. I was just telling you what I would do. What am I talking about? Work long enough and you can buy any gun you want.
Did I get a mark on my metalurgy package from what I did to the garbage truck? I've never welded without assistance, or worked directly on a car before.
Yeah, I'll give you a new use, no sweat.
I'll look around the blacksmiths shop and look for what appears to be his next project.
GE 11 Good but below expectations
He points you to a block of metal and a pile of nails.
"Eye always need to be making these nails. Tell you what. Start making nails. If you make enough of them by the time I close up shop, the job is yours."
And I have no idea how we would decide that. Any suggestions?
Fri Oct 29 2010 11:39 pm # -
This looks like a mechanics post so I'm replying sooner.
It would be a skill roll for hard metalurgy package so 1@6.
I have an 11@ tech bias, which I'm sure this world is lower than so 2x the tech bias level of the world.
and 2@2 ed level.
There is also the fact that nails are insanely simple to make which is a positive sit mod and that the tools at hand are designed for the task which I'd say is another positive sit mod.If it were me I'd give +10 on both sit mods. It's easy to make and the tools are pretty much the prime tools for the job.
Another alternative is you could say that it's a relative success. Under my success % is surprisingly good (we are talking about audition for apprenticeship, not to be a blacksmith of my own), between my success % and botch is passable, and a botch would be failure to get hired. I think that outlines closer to what the situation would be.

I have an 11@ tech bias, which I'm sure this world is lower than so 2x the tech bias level of the world.
and 2@2 ed level.Biases are for the entire universe. Not just the planet on which you are standing. The referee doesn't really feel like researching or really care what the tech bias *should* be. A 15@10 bias just means that SOMEONE SOMEWHERE in the vastness of the universe has 15@10 tech. I have no problem with that notion. So no, the tech bias is 15@10.
So that's 16+22+22+10+10=80 and you rolled an 86. GE roll 22, since you failed the task
"Humph, I coulda made more nails blindfolded boy. But, since it's your first day, and I really hates makin' nails, how would you like a job makin' nails? I gots me a feelin' this here town is about to start a-boomin'. We's gunna need lots and lots ah nails to build it with."

You go to the hotel. There's a lot of different races there. Indians, blacks, whites, some Chinese. Dinner is an all you can eat buffet, included in the price of the room. There's also a general store, where you can get a new outfit for your remaining 25 cents.
Sat Oct 30 2010 3:20 pm # -
Ok, going to get a more suitable outfit then after eating, nuetral colors, I like how brown and tans look on me in particular so I'll favor those.
Then it's off to bed and up early to head over to the blacksmith.
He said no later than 8, so I'll show up at 6:30. It wouldn't hurt to make a good impression after my folly.
Sat Oct 30 2010 5:27 pm # -
You get to the blacksmith's shop at 6:30, according to the clock in the town square. He's not around. You sit down to wait. And wait. And wait. And wait. Did I mention that you were waiting? Checking the town square clock, it's 5 minutes until 8. You're just about to give up, when he arrives from across the street.
"I said no later-n 8. Getting here early won't do you no better."
He sets you to work making nails.
How many do you think you could make in 8 hours?

"Just wanted to make sure I was here in plenty of time."
As to how many I could make in 8 hours I have absolutely no idea, but it's not terribly important is it? I either make an amount the blacksmith finds lacking, average, or I exceed his expectations. I'd just do a comparative success skill roll to be honest. High success would be exceeding expectations, failure would be below expectations, and low success would be average.
Tue Nov 2 2010 12:16 am # -
High success would be exceeding expectations, failure would be below expectations, and low success would be average.
Or just count it as practice and roll a GE. This guy REALLY hates making nails. Only a 30 would get you fired.
Sorry for lack of posts. I just get stymied easily
And the GE is 14
You make a goodly amount of nail, and the boss is pleased.
"Keep up work like that son, and you might jest get a raise. Not today though."
He hands you a gold 1 dollar coin.

No problem, but I'm always here to help if you need it, just tell me what the problem is.
I'll thank the blacksmith and head back over to the hotel for dinner.
I'm not sure what you want me to ask about the buffet, it's included in the cost of the room I'm staying in anyway so I'm going to be using it, but past the fact that I'm going to be eating there tonight I don't know what you're getting at.
Sun Nov 28 2010 2:01 pm # -
You head back to the hotel and get in line for the buffet. This cost you a quarter, so you're down to 75 cents. A young black former slave is the host at the buffet. There's all manner of meats and breads. You ask the former slave what the meat is. He looks at you with a twinkle in his eye and says "Where I'm from, we have saying. 'All meat is meat' in udder words, don't ask." That just sounds insanely funny to the ref, that's all
After you're finished eating, you hear some talk of the Clanton gang. Some are calling them "No good lousy varmints" Other are praising them as heroes saying that it's "Those good for nothing Earps" that need to get out of town.

Sun Nov 28 2010 7:31 pm # -
I tend not to ask what meat is what as I eat almost anything as long as it tastes good, but fair enough.
Looks like there is a feud going on that's splitting the town, good to know, and probably good to avoid for now.
What were the approximate cost of the guns? I had been in there the other day and it's probably something I would have noticed if it was displayed.
Otherwise going to sleep early after exercising for an hour. Just sit-ups and push-ups unless something happens that in some way disturbs this. I'll just be going about my routine of working to get paid, and paying 25 cents of that towards room and board every day, and exercising an hour every day plus the physical exertion of being a blacksmiths apprentice until something eventful happens.
What I'm saying is if nothing is going to happen beside I get up, go to work, get back, eat, exercise and sleep for X days or months lets jump ahead a bit. I'll be striving to impress the blacksmith during this time so he starts showing me more of what he knows and potentially so I get that raise he was asking for. I'll also be asking questions which will be phrased from an ignorant stance but to inspire him to use more advanced methods (such as suggesting why not use this fuel over this one and so on, along with the concept of beating the metal to work impurities into clusters. This was done more and more as time went along as people began to understand gathering the impure iron into clusters gave overall a stronger metal.)
Sun Nov 28 2010 11:58 pm # -
I don't want to start skipping ahead just yet. Couple more game days maybe, just not right at this time.
The revolvers were $10-12. Comes with a gun, leather belt and holster, and the belts hold 50 shells. The rifles were lever action, $12-14, comes with a leather sling which also holds 50 shells. Shells are $2 a box of 50. Shotguns were single shot or double barrel $10-15, comes with a leather sling which holds 25 shells. Shells $2 a box of 25.
You go to work the next day. The boss greets you.
"So, who you sidin' wit? The Clantons or the Earps? There's a load of trouble a-brewin, let me tell you."

Fine by me, so long as things happen on those days, even if it's just me getting to know my mentor.
"I don't know anything about either of them, and as far as I can see neither has done me any harm so I don't see a reason to choose sides. Who are you siding with? I might as well follow your lead since you're the only one I know in town so far."
Mon Nov 29 2010 3:09 am # -
"I couldn't give a hoot less. I'm with you. Don't take no sides in a feud, unless you're kin to one of em. Besides, it's bad for bidness if people think you're taking a side."
He starts you to work making nails. About halfway through the day he says:
"Boy, you sure is working hard on them thar nails. You wantin to larn something better?"
Mon Nov 29 2010 2:17 pm # -
"That sounds great, what did you have in mind?"
(If you need any help with different types of metal working let me know, I can give my 2 cents on the matter)
Mon Nov 29 2010 4:15 pm # -
"Well boy, what do you want to learn? Make nails for the first half of the day, do blacksmithing for the other half. I know it's pretty boring work. That's why I hired you. I'm not so mean as to make you do that constantly. If you do good work, I'll even give you a raise."
A quarter raise means that, paying 25 cents for the hotel, you would have a buck a day. Much easier to track when you skip ahead. Don't you agree?
