How many times do I have to say the same thing before it sinks through that THICK skull of yours? My character went into it under the impression that Lauren was BLIND. BLIND, unable to see. Without vision. She could SEE. She was not BLIND.

THAT'S ALL THAT MATTERS!!!!!!

Whatever other skills were used by anyone are BESIDE THE POINT!!!!!!!!

LAUREN WAS NOT BLIND!!!!!!!!!! She could SEE!!!!!!!

WHATEVER OTHER SKILLS USED ARE COMPLETELY IRRELEVANT!!!!!!!!

He had the impression that she was unable to see. She could see. Therefore, that's lying by omission. I CLEARLY STATED to her right up front that I was practicing a sightless skill. Point me to the part where she makes a similar declaration to him.

Found it yet? No? Oh maybe that's because IT ISN'T THERE!!!!!!!!!!!

I think he is justified in his anger over it, and your PATHETIC ATTEMPTS to justify her behavior only serve to show that you haven't paid a lick of attention to ANYTHING I'VE SAID!!!!!!!!!!

And she didn't know that.

She assumed that if you were practicing a skill to help you fight in the dark, that you wouldn't mind if she used a skill to fight in the dark, too. (You're about to say that your blindfighting and her nightvision are not the same at all, completely different, etc., but she doesn't think that way and she didn't know that you think that way.)

You assumed that Lauren would not be able to see in the dark - that Lauren would know that you wanted to fight blind against someone who was also blind without you telling her that. She can read minds, but she wasn't reading yours right then; you assumed she would know what you wanted just from what you said.

You both made assumptions, and you were both wrong in your assumptions. No one lied, even by omission. You just both failed to communicate properly, resulting in a misunderstanding.

Talking to myself:

However, I gotta set that right. Go to the bakery and arrange to have a box of cinnamon rolls sent to her room. A letter saying:

"Thanks for your help. Hope to hear from you soon."

Amuse myself for the remainder of the day. What day are we on, anyway? I think it was day 16. When I wake up, it will be day 17.

On day 17, use the scriff sense to locate and "Accidentally" run into Lauren in public.

"Did you get the cinnamon rolls?"

See what happens.

The ironic thing of it is that, at this moment, my character and I have exactly the same feeling. Complete and total idiocy. I hate that feeling, don't you? When am I going to learn not to do that?

You manage to sort out Derek's direction because he is in central computing (he is sometimes wandering around the station tracing faults or making repairs to terminals or lines), and so follow the other draw to an upper section of TerraNova you've not previously visited.

It appears to be an educational area. Lauren is lecturing on primitive cultures and her experiences on such planets. She answers a number of questions, and then the class ends after about forty minutes.

I am assuming that you are quietly slipping into the back and waiting for the class to end, not making a scene or disrupting things. Correct me if I'm mistaken.

Yeah, you're mistaken, I'm not even sticking around. When I said "In public" I meant exactly that. This is a little too close to stalking. I think I'll leave and put myself on a path that would put me in the general area between here and her apartment, and wait for her to come back down. I want it to look like an accidental meeting, not that I am pursuing her actively. Actually, that sounds much closer to stalking, doesn't it? Still, what Lauren doesn't know won't hurt her. And neither will I.... Hopefully, she isn't relaxed enough to scriff sense me.

It happens that Lauren has become accustomed to using her scriff sense to find her way to camp--or in this case, her apartment. However, today she is distracted by a student tagging along asking her questions about the people by the lake to whom she introduced pottery and from whom she learned about stick weaving. She thus happens upon you unaware, and doesn't even notice as you fall into step alongside her.

Lauren notices you because her student is staring at you. She turns to look.

"Hello, John. Have you been waiting for me?"

It is day 17, and Lauren successfully projects into your mind a pattern for a skill that adapts your body against cold. It reroutes fat supplies and blood vessels in your extremities and skin so that your core temperature is protected and you are padded against frostbite. Says she originally learned it trying to go spear fishing in a lake that was flooded from melt from a nearby mountain just after the ice cleared from the waters. You can still feel the cold, but you aren't so much damaged by it.

At the gun store, have I seen/can I order anything resembling an armored trench coat? Steel lined, Kevlar, maybe some radical new polymer or something? Stopping bullets at least would be good, but if it offers protection from high-tech weapons, I won't turn my nose up at it. I figure I'm probably going to encounter bullets more often than any other ranged weapon.

Three Posts, 2 days after last.

MJ, I know you say not to worry about it until it actually comes up in game, but I can (and I think I will) use faking a doctor-convincing psychotic episode as a distraction for Lauren at some point. I could easily imagine that scenario unfolding. I will not accept less than an expert score at it. (And if you think that's demanding, I was considering saying "No less than 3@10") What should I look up? Body skills? (Acting skill perhaps?) I think if I were the referee, this is the one I would choose. Just giving my two cents on it, ya know.

It would break down something like

3@something, acting, faking doctor-convincing psychotic episode.

2@10 acting like a doctor-convincing crazy person. (That's my normal)
1@10 acting like a normal person. (Which would be an actor, to me) This should never come up in game. He isn't psychotic anymore, so he's just constantly practicing a high-amateur skill.

My character probably oscillates between the two completely at random. This isn't just acting crazy to scare people, this is my normal. Not kidding.

It was just a thought, that's all.

I could also imagine Psionic (Faking a brain injury?) I think I saw one listed as Mag, although, for the life of me, I can't see how. Just curious.

I'll look it up, but you just tell me where to look. When I'm finished, I'll let you look them over, and we can talk about it. Cool?

I think if you want such a coat, you'll have to play out looking for it. You saw clothing for explorations, but did not ever look at what was there.

Usually you have the blacksmithing before the psionics; I assumed you did it that way. Computer lessons follow psionics, and you're not interested in those, so Lauren is going to learn something from Derek and then go on her date.

She smiles at you when you ask who, but doesn't answer.

The guns have arrived, just now; he hasn't even taken them out of the crate, but he'll get them for you.

He also shows you a line of protective clothing, a tight weave polymer that is extremely difficult to pierce with any type of pointed, piercing, or slicing kinetic that is not sonic, overlaying a shock absorbing layer that spreads blunt force over a wide area and reduces vibration from sonic attacks. It's also highly polished, so it reflects lasers across a broad spectrum including infrareds and ultraviolets, and has some benefit against other energy attacks. It comes in long and short sleeved shirts, long and short pants, and long and short coats, as well as accessories including gloves, hats, scarves, and socks, all of which are in stock. It's also very light weight for what it does--the long pants are about a pound, the coats a bit more and the shirts a bit less.

Now I feel like even more of an idiot. You didn't happen to write down what all I ordered did you? It was a 9mm carbine rifle, ten 30 round magazines, a single shot shotgun, and some magazine holders and holsters I think. Do you have it written down?

"Hey thanks shopkeeper type person. How much do the trench coats cost?"

Or I guess what I should be asking is Do I have enough money for one?

What I want to get is a shirt and a trench coat. Perhaps several shirts if I can reasonably afford it.

Take the shirts down to the shooting range. Hit them with everything I have. Crossbow, 9mm pistols and carbine, MAK 90, 357 magnum, and all 4 types of shotgun shells. I could imagine they might not want you shooting shredders in there. What's the policy?

See how these shirts stand up to the abuse. Preferably, get one shirt per type of ammo. So that's 8 shirts, if they're not too expensive.

Would shooting shredders be a new use on the shotgun skill?

I think I remember what I bought. The 9mm carbine, ten 30 round magazines, the shotgun, and some magazine holders.

Get 8 shirts, and one trench coat. Take the 8 shirts to the shooting range, and hit them with everything I've got, as described in the above post. One shirt per bullet caliber. I want to see how effective they are. Would shooting the flares and shredders out of the shotgun be a new use? I've never shot ammo like that before.

How much does the trench coat weigh? The rest of the shirts I'm probably going to disown, once I find out how much abuse they can take. The trench coat though is probably going into the VSP.

I got that down to about 70 pounds, so that, with my clothes, should be under the requisite 76 pound maximum.

The long coat being the largest single item, it weighs two pounds and folds into something about eight inches square and three inches thick.

Obviously you're not planning to hold the shirts in one hand and shoot them with the other. How are you positioning them, on what kind of targets, and at what distances?

First off, does the shooting range have any rules against shooting the flares and shredders?

Secondly, do they have any stationary target stands, or are holograms the only targets they have? If they have stationary target stands, I would put the shirts on the stands, and shoot them. See what kind of damage is done to the shirt, and also to the target behind it.

If worse comes to worse, get some scrap something or other from my work to hang the shirts on. Preferably something that the bullets would normally damage. See what the impact does to the material after the shirt stops the bullets. Styrofoam or equivalent would be ideal. Weight it down if it is that lightweight.

Crossbow first. I would actually expect this to do more damage than the bullets. (Kevlar won't stop arrows, of course, this isn't Kevlar) distance, 20 feet total of 6 arrows.

Different shirt, Two 9mm pistols, one in each hand, and just open up on them with two 15 round clips. distance, 50 feet

Same shirt, 9mm carbine, 30 round clip, set on triburst. With a loud cry of "Die you commie son of a bitch!!!!" empty the magazine at it. (I've never shot a rifle on triburst, new use?) distance, 50 feet

Different shirt, MAK 90, 30 round clip. Open fire like a lunatic from Vietnam. distance, 50 feet

Different shirt, 357. Fire 50 rounds at it. distance, 50 feet

Different shirt, 12 gauge bird shot, 5 rounds distance, 50 feet

Different shirt, 12 gauge 00 buckshot 5 rounds distance, 50 feet

Different shirt, 12 gauge flares 1 round (Dude said these flew for a mile, 100 yard distance.)

I'm using the single shot 12 gauge I just got. I want to familiarize myself with it.

Different shirt, 12 gauge shredders. 1 round 100 yard distance

(I don't expect the shirts to survive the latter two....)

I don't expect I'd need to test them against the 22 if they stop 9mm and 357 bullets.

Just out of curiosity, how are you going to do the rolls? There's over 100 rounds being fired. Since I want to see what kind of damage is done, I'd expect just count it as practice shooting, and just tell me what kind of damage was sustained. Just my two cents.

In case you haven't figured it out, this is what inspired my post on Throwing Lead. That's what I would be doing here, rapid shooting, but they would all be aimed, as described in that post. Given my experience rapid shooting, I know I'd hit these solidly on at least 25 out of 30 shots, so I don't think a GE roll would be appropriate. On the other hand, I don't think hundreds of dice rolls for aimed shots would be appropriate either. I'm wondering if there is an appropriate middle ground to go to. I'm rapid shooting because I want to test these under worst-case scenario conditions. I can think of no worse scenario than someone coming up on me with an assault rifle and letting loose with a full magazine.

All right, we can keep this simple.

None of your projectiles pierced the outer layer of the cloth.

The plastic scraps you set up for backing took some dents from the more potent bullets, and you can tell they would have hurt and probably injured you, but not near so badly as would have happened otherwise. You can fire a bullet or a bolt right through this plastic, but there was only one place where there was a hole in the plastic, where the shirt was pushed through it by a shot from the .357 (which I take to be the most damaging on single projectiles).

The flares do not damage the shirt, but they did melt the plastic a bit, which suggests it does not protect as well against fire.

Refresh my memory on the shredders. Are these explosive rounds? What kind of damage do they do?

Actually it would be the MAK 90. The 357 is the most powerful handgun. The MAK 90 is a rifle. The 357 is more powerful than the 9mm carbine, but the MAK 90 would blow both of them away.

Shredders dangerous blast with a damaging fragments rider within 10 yards, damaging blast with annoying fragments in the next ten, and annoying blast in the next ten.

Yes, they're explosives. That was what you told me about them when I bought them. The SWAT team uses these to blow doors open. It effectively turns your shotgun into a grenade launcher.

No, the whole thing is like practice, shooting at targets on the shooting gallery. There's no new use involved. New use is really for figuring out that you can do something you've never done before and didn't know you could do, and so improving your understanding. You've always known you could set this for triburst, you've just never done it. Yes, using it that way as part of practice means that you're getting better--as part of practice.

The exploding shredders dent the plastic badly, but do not penetrate the fabric weave.

Ten to twelve inches deep I can live with. Get some superglue, or epoxy, or some kind of incredibly strong glue. Take a piece from one of the bedsheets that I bought, and glue it overlapping the existing pocket, to make it longer. The shotgun is 18 inches folded, 12 inch barrel, opens to 30 inches. So I would glue 6-8 inches of material overlapping the existing pocket, to make it long enough to hold the shotgun. A little bit sticking out the top so I can grab the gun, and overlapping the existing pocket enough to be really sturdy.

1@3 use glue, I guess, if you're intending to roll for it. It's not something I did much after Kindergarten, ya know?

The shotgun holds a single shell when folded. It would be loaded with a single 00 buckshot round, with 10 shells rubber-banded or otherwise secured to the stock. Four 00 buckshot, four shredders and two flares.

This is on day 17, BTW.

I do not appear to have the details of the shotgun handy, but my recollection is that it folded up into something of a flat rectangle. My concern, then, is whether it is narrow enough to fit in the pocket.

Have you got that description?

I don't believe I ever got such a description. However, based on what I know of modern single-shot shotguns, and imagining one folded in half, I would be pretty certain it would fit in the inside pocket of a coat. Only a really bad dice roll would mean that it wouldn't. Those kinds of shotguns are relatively narrow and small. What I'm saying is that, if I were the referee, based on my own personal knowledge, I'd probably give it to the player without a roll. But that's just me.

And yes MJ, I'm being absolutely honest about that. If the pocket is large enough so that a man could insert a closed fist inside it (which would almost certainly be the case) then the shotgun would almost certainly fit inside, as far as width of the pocket. Besides, a coat like this would probably be designed to conceal weapons, just by its very nature. A guy wearing a bulletproof coat would be likely to carry weapons.

Oh ya know what? I almost forgot to ask. What are the bad-weather capabilities of the coat? Insulation, waterproof ability, etc. Or is it just a bulletproof plastic raincoat?

Just to clarify, the 9mm carbine would be moderately more powerful than the handguns because of the longer barrel, but not enough to raise the damage category. Probably double all the distances on the handguns, with a maximum range of 100 yards on the carbine rifle would be sufficient.

The MAK 90 is loaded with the 100 round drum, and has the 50 round magazine rubber banded to the stock. So, I've got 150 rounds ready the minute I pick up the gun. The 30 round magazines are all taped together so that when one is empty, flip the clip, and you're good to go. I believe I have 10 of those, so 5 sets of 2 clips taped together.

All the guns and magazines are fully loaded.

Oh yeah, and I'm probably going to be disowning some stuff here soon. Gotta drop the weight. Don't need that survivalist 22 anymore, for example.

Concerning the coat, it is designed to be relatively light. That said, there are a few points that can be noted:
- Because its outer shell is reflective of energy weapons, it gives some protection against solar heat. That is, it does not protect against the heat in atmosphere, but reflects the direct heat of sunlight away from the wearer.
- Because its inner shell is a form of inertial padding, it provides a thin layer of warmth. This is not terribly significant, but if worn over a coat or jacket would create an extra layer that was fairly significant in terms of retaining body heat.
- Because the exterior is of a weave tight enough to deflect needles, rain tends to be shed from it. If you left water sitting on it, it would eventually soak through, but assuming that the water can slide off, it will. Obviously, it affords some protection against hail, and it can withstand any wind in which you can stay on your feet.
O.K., now back to the gun. Unless I'm thinking of a different gun you considered or purchased, I remember describing this, and I remember that my description was based in large part on a toy I think I never had. The Man from U.N.C.L.E. series (which contrary to ads running on USA is actually the drama that has more letters than any other, even N.C.I.S.) produced a line of spy toys that were rather James Bond-ish (after all, that was the inspiration for the series, I'm sure). One was a radio that unfolded into a gun. The barrel slid into the top part and the stock bent around to cover the trigger compartment, leaving a rectangular box with a handle on top that doubled as a scope.

That's the basic concept on which your folding shotgun is designed, in my mind.

It's also what I'm pretty sure I described somewhere. I can hunt for the post, if you like, but it will probably be a few days before I find it.

You're describing the survivalist 22, not the shotgun. I remember it specifically because I took some manner of objection to how the barrel was designed.

I remember the shotgun design. The shotgun is 18 inches folded, with a 12 inch barrel, and folds in half, 30 inches open, 18 inches closed. The barrel is on a hinge connected to the stock. It holds a single shell when folded up. It folds in half, with the barrel going inside the stock when folded. Folded, it would be the size of the stock, which I assure you would fit into that pocket. You unfold it to extend the barrel which locks in that position. I remember this specifically. Your radio gun design was on the survivalist 22. Remember MJ, I'm psychotic. That gives us an enhanced memory. If it's that important to you to look for the description, have at it, although I am completely certain this is the design.

This is the description the the survivalist 22. As you can see, it matches your radio gun design.

Collapsible .22 rifle with 6-bullet clip, barrel slides into stock, can't fire without extending barrel; rear of stock folds down and up flush over trigger guard, latching in place to either position; clip inserts into rear portion of stock, can be kept in place, but gun will not operate unless fully opened. 0:30 to open gun fully. Uses standard .22 ammo. Barrel does not unscrew but telescopes, slightly wider in diameter in extended end than in stock (shortens range). Think of it in three sections. Center section has trigger mechanism and chamber; stock folds around to cover this, partly hollowed, also has part of feed mechanism to hold bullets and feed them to chamber when in open position. Barrel pops out from other side. Completely collapsed it approaches rectangular, barrel extension flush with side and other side has two relatively flat surfaces (bulge on rear stock meets indentation on the central section, pressure interlocks mechanisms, released by lever on underside). Release button beneath barrel unlatches lower section and allows barrel extension to slide out. It does not store spare ammo. Each section is about fifteen inches in total length, barrel extension shorter (has to stop before the hammer mechanism and have an inch or so inside when fully extended). 48" tip to back. Folded, 15"x~8"x~1.5-2", not perfectly squared in any direction. Floats in water, constructed almost entirely of polymers and plastics with some metal parts, made for survivalist use. lightweight, #3. Does not fire folded because ammo supply is in rear stock, partly intended as safety feature, to prevent weapon from firing when stowed.
