I am very pleased to have Nikolaj returning to our game.

I suppose the joke of it is that earlier this month I moved his character information to the inactive file--one of the very few people I thought were unlikely to return, and I needed a column near Scott to start listing information on Alice and one near John Cross to start saving stuff on Terry. But it is easily restored, even if I am not completely certain of the original order in which they joined the game.

Nikolaj and I have corresponded on this a bit last week; I apologize again that this has been an incredibly hectic week and I have been unable to move forward with anything. This is an unusual circumstance, so we're going to resolve it with an unusual solution. Nikolaj is going to be presumed to be starting now, as of today, but to have been in the B Monster Movie world in which he began. The actions I had his character do (which were relatively minor, as I recall) will remain his actions, he will fill in a few gaps, and he will begin in a new world--but he will begin as the person he is now, a bit older than he was.

Because he is not exactly the same person, I am posting his character sheet here and he is going to make a few edits. He is permitted to add skills and equipment which he has acquired since he started last time. I hope he will delete items which 1) he no longer has and 2) he did not use already in the game.

Also, Nikolaj, at the bottom of the list is $70,000 in B Monster Movie World cash and "$2000 in hundreds B Monster Movie World from Nikolaj"--I just copied it to each character who got it, including you. You would have had that money for a few days, during which time you were to use the $2000 to purchase whatever you thought would be valuable to you as a verser. As I mentioned in my e-mail, I believe your companions invested it in precious metals and gems and jewelry, which they guessed would be reasonably negotiable in other universes. I will remind you that when you verse out you will have a 220 pound (roughly 110 kilograms) weight limit on any equipment not actually on person (worn or carried such as in pockets or a backpack or duffel you are actually holding/wearing). With that in mind, you may use your money to acquire anything which ought to be reasonably available in that world. I think that dollars and Euros are fairly close to each other in value most of the time, but if that doesn't give you a ballpark figure on how much it is try any currency conversion site on the web.

Nikolaj is having trouble logging in again; he tells me that he has written to the Gaming Outpost staff about it, so hopefully they are working on it. He e-mailed me something which I will post in part and to which I will respond.

Meneerke: Used by one person at work. It is a familiarised form of the word mister in flemish. Translated it would meen little mister, but it has not that official ring to it. It's dialect as well.
change: I don’t work at the said place anymore, and the collegue who called me that wasn’t very close. I have in the mean time lived in a Christian community in which a girl called me a ‘bikkel’, which is hard to translate. It indicates being tough. (She called me that when I was fasting for a week, because she found it impressive that I would keep it up to go a week without foud, while doing internships and stuff.) My main nick will still be Nico, although friends from the Ukraine call me Nick.

I will keep the disused name, noting that it is connected to a previous job. After all, it was obvious that your character no longer worked there by virtue of the fact that he versed out, and you could encounter this person in a parallel world.

I will add "Nick" and "Bikkel", with appropriate notes. Nick is much more an American sort of name, incidentally.

Animal Magnetism 1@7 (I have found out that I have a calming effect on some cats and that children readily accept me and find me great. It’s really the grownups I have troubles with. :P)

Description height: 6 feet something. weight: about 150 pounds I'm guessing. hairstyle: short, but no buzzcut. Requires gel, longer on the top than on the sides haircolor: brown age: 24 (january 31 1984) eye color: dark brown facial hair: full beard, relatively short (longer then clint eastwood, shorter then Sean Connery. A bit like Oak on facebook.) I have no specific birthmarks but a larger then normal pigmentspot in my neck. I have a scar on my upper lip under my nose (in the winter someone asked if it was a frozen bugger :P), on my back (lower then the shoulderblade) and on my left knee. I have a few zits most of the time.

1@5 is your average amateur rating. I'm not uncomfortable with 1@4 for you on this. It is, however, a magic skill--all musical instrument skills are, as they involve intuitive creativity in the production of art. It's M0@0.

1@7 Photography (analog and digital). I already had this. If anything, it might have declined I didn’t have the time for it.

Indeed, I believe you used this in the game, to some degree. Analog photography falls under T6@2 (with lenses and scopes, the chemistry comparable to explosives); digital photography is T10@3 (the electronics of the photocell array). We'll list both.

1@1 Russian/Ukraïnian Language P0@0 (I’ve been taking classes after my trip to the Ukraïne. This might be a bit higher but not much. I haven’t had much time for learning. I’m learning about half a year now, guided.)

There's the possibility that you could be as high as 1@4 or 1@5, if you were really focused on it; on the other hand, I note that you've got German and Japanese listed as 1@1 skills, so I should let you do the comparison yourself: how good is your Russian/Ukranian compared with your other languages? I'm listing it as 1@1 so it will be listed, but I'll wait to hear from you on that.

1@8 Childcare

I'm not certain what to do with this one. My impression is that it is a skill package--a collection of several skills which work together toward one objective. I'm not certain, though, what skills ought to be included. Perhaps if you describe what it is that this skill enables you to do, in specific detail, I could wrap my head around it.

1@1 First Aid, specified for little children, but also grownups, includes mouth to mouth.

First aid is a tech medical skill. I'm not certain whether by "mouth-to-mouth" you mean what we called artificial respiration back in the sixties and seventies or what's been called Cardiopulmonary Resussitation since then--the latter focuses more on chest compressions to stimulate circulation. It doesn't matter, because both are included under a T7@1 bias level.

1@3 Origami

You know, for all the origamists (is that a word?) who have played in my games, you'd think I'd have figured out where origami falls in the bias system. I'm going to list it at T1@1, as comparable to soft sculpture and clay molding, because I can't think of a better spot for it. You can't make paper at that level, but I don't see why you couldn't fold it--and leather work does fall at that level, so we're close enough.

I’ve played basketball, should that be here as a skill? That would be low amateur still.

I tend to think of sports like that as being several skills--throwing, catching, running, jumping, manipulating the ball in other ways (dribbling)--and in defense of this I note that players are better and worse in different areas. For the moment, rather than attempting to list everything, if we get into a situation in which you believe that your skills from basketball would help (e.g., you have to jump to reach something above your head), you'll remind me that you played basketball and we'll assess the appropriate skill at that point.

I think I got a camera in the B-movie world? I’d take the camera and the developing gear if possible. I’ll leave the enlargement gear, so that I can develop the rolls, but won’t be able to put them on paper until I find a suitable set-up to do that. I’ll also take the tripod.

As far as I remember, my character didn’t believe the versing was true, so he would have bought little, and kept the rest safe. He would have paid MJ back the money he loaned him. Further, he might have bought an interesting book or so, like “The Divine Comedy” by Dante Aleghiery (Or however you write that).

As I explained in the e-mail, you can't return the money because the Architect is half way across the galaxy and you don't have any way to contact him. He entrusted it to your care, but you can disown it and leave it behind in the hotel room. (It's probably not worth more than firestarter to you at this point anyway, and given the shape of the world upon your departure it's unlikely that the maids will find it and consider it a windfall.)

As to the $2000, it was agreed that you could spend that on anything you wanted to have. A used copy of Dante's Divine Comedy (already added) is probably $1 for a used paperback, $20 for a new hardcover edition, so you can have your pick. If you like, you can disown your $2000 also, but there's not much sense in not buying something while you can. Remember, the Architect bought stuff for everyone--he didn't act like money was important or like he needed or wanted it back.

If it would still be within limits, my art supplies trunk would also have versed with me, as will some sketchbooks. They wouldn’t weigh much and the little trunk would contain charcoal, black ink, dried walnut powder (Bister), paper tape, goache, acrylics, ecoline, aquarelle and colouring pencils. Possible my markers would have versed with me too. I think that would be it.

I don't see you as anywhere near the limit. I presume "Markers, several colors" is sufficient?

We're good at my end. Let me know if you're satisfied.

Huzzah, I'm back! Let's hope it'll last. I'm not going to attempt to change anything on my account anymore (like password and stuff).

I just typed this all up:

Also adding: A bracelet composed of coloured plastic shapes in the form of starts, flowers, harts, ... in primary and secundary colours (think bright children's colours) on a transparent elastic band. Actually it's a childrens necklace, but it just fits my neck so as to give me trouble breathing, so I wear it folded in two around my right wrist. I got it from orphan children in the Ukraïne, just because we took time to play with them. It's powerfull for a tie of love and memory.

btw, half of the orphans there could speak Dutch! It was due to an exchange project.

I’ll take the paperback version of the book. I like paperback. It has a certain air around it that I like. Unless I find an illustrated book, which would probably be hardcover (and more than 20 dollars?).

I’m not a guy that buys things ‘en masse’. So I’ll probably have some amount of money left.
But, as seeing that the circumstances might make me consider versing to be true, I might also have converted my money in valuables or stuff that would keep me safe in other environments.

Let’s see, I’d buy a first aid kit (bandages + salves and stuff), a flashlight, preferably one not relying on batteries that need to be inserted. I’ve heard of flashlight that recharge by shaking and some by squeezing, …

I’d buy some kind of Flintstone (or magnesium stick or whatever modern equivalent) and will have tested it out before versing to see if I can work with it (so as to already have a 1@1 in fire starting or something like that). I might buy a filtering system to filter water and a survival manual that can teach me the basics of starting a fire, where to camp, how to build a shelter, …

I’d buy a tent, rope, shovel, … (standard modern trekking equipment), looking to things I could also use without a modern source of energy. I’d be certain to have a sleeping bag that keeps me warm below freezing point.

I’d look for a case or set of cases to keep my gear in (water and shock proof). It’s not convenient to have my stuff scattered about everywhere every time I verse. So that might have popped into my mind while remembering the stories I heard from the Architect and Earl.

Outside of that I’d probably would have shopped for some clothes since I only had two sets of clothes and one set of underwear on me. I’d buy some more underwear (let’s say 10 sets), and for clothes I’d have snuffed around at thrift stores to find interesting bits of clothing. (Hawaii shirts, brightly colored clothes (including pants, If I could find a pair of red pants, I’d be thrilled), I might also buy one real suit. A modern one, without tie and some shoes that go with it.)

The rest I’d convert into stuff that are valuable, but wouldn’t take a lot of cash need to be present to swap around again. So no big diamond or whatever. More like little bits of gold and silver, little precious gems or maybe even rings, a necklace, … Unless something else, which is better presents itself. But I’m not sure if there will be much left.

"Markers, several colours", is very sufficient.

Oh, for a world. First I thought a strange world would be what it needed to convince the character, but now that he's somewhat convinced that isn't neccecairy. So anything goes really. I'll see how the character would handle it. Something where there is some sort of goal or an amount of discovery to do would be beneficial I think. Although I'm not quite sure what my style is. A nono would be some dungeonhacking adventure, since the character is mostly pacifistic in nature. He'll try solving things differently.

Thanks for the suggestion, John, but I think that the problem you will face will not be the sort of problem that would be best for Nikolaj.

Nikolaj, reading over the skills you've listed, I think that your skills set really fits quite well as Teaching--the ability to assist another in learning anything the teacher understands--with an emphasis on children. I'm going to list it thus, rather than will those details: 1@7 Teaching P0@1 childhood emphasis.

I'm not certain that Arts and Crafts adds much not already covered under 2@2 Graphic Design Concepts M0@0 and 1@8 Art Theory and History M0@0, but I'll add it as M0@0 also.

Improvisational storytelling seems to be similar to role playing games, so M0@0 for that, too.

Russian at 1@3 is good.

I was incorporating the developing as part of the photography skill, mostly for convenience but also because I figured it all came together pretty well--the optics and the chemistry are about the same point in technological development, and you've got both.

It's been so long since I studied my basic woodcraft that I'd never heard of magnesium firestarters, and had to look them up. It appears, though, that this is still flint and steel, with the addition that you have a block of magnesium from which you shave some very fine powder (with the knife you will use to strike the flint), and the magnesium ignites much more readily than the tinder. Thus I'm listing a Magnesium Flint & Steel fire starter block. You'll also kneed a knife for it, so I'll include a 6" blade sheath knife.

It is a very easy skill for you to learn, and (rolling 58) you learn 1@2 Ignite Fire from Spark (Magnesium Flint & Steel) T1@2.

I'm assuming that underwear is shorts of some kind, and not also t-shirts, but am including socks because the survival book would have told you how important these are and you didn't mention them.

A 15 General Effects roll is only mildly favorable; I rolled it for what you found at thrift shops. (Having done a fair amount of thrift shop shopping myself, I know how hit-and-miss those places are.) I'm adding

That comes to $390 from $2000 leaves $1610 to convert to small valuable trinkets. I'm going to convert that to "gold and silver coins, rings, necklaces" because they're easiest to get--it's not so easy to purchase unset cut stones in the retail market, so these are really the kinds of things you can get over the counter at jewelers and other dealers.

I was about to post the new thread for your new world, but I've got an errand that crept up on me so I'll be back to post to the game threads--including the new one for Nikolaj (which I will link from here).

Oh--I forgot to ask for a better description of what sort of containers you want. Are we looking for suitcases, trunks, storage boxes? Do they have wheels and handles? I've not added them to the sheet yet because of that uncertainty.

I've been mulling over exactly what kind of world would work for Nikolaj for a few days. I was contemplating sending him to a setting in a book I'm reading, in which a 16th century eastern European nobleman is wrestling with issues surrounding the fact that he's saving his country by working with elves from a closely related universe who have powers he considers magical--condemned by the church--but the story has a lot of warfare in it, particularly in the early parts, and I'm not sure I could integrate Nikolaj into it easily. There's general agreement that he would be great for Mystery of the Vorgo, but that this means he would have to do Quest for the Vorgo first; and I thought of starting him on my Narnia series, but it really requires a small group who have some skills at the outset. I've been saturated with sci fi and fantasy settings of late (thank you, Eric--I've almost finished the books you sent), but none of them leap out at me, and most of them have a lot of fighting in them. Star Wars crossed my mind, but I've never run a Star Wars setting and I've a feeling I'd have to come up with something really unusual even for Star Wars to work well here.

All right, I've made up my mind. We'll continue this in Nikolaj Rising.

I was thinking about shockproof and waterproof crates of some sort. But if I would see some of those with whels and handles I'd take those.

Also I recolected that Earl probably thought me how to silkscreen.

Hmmm--most of the "shockproof" cases I've seen contain foam rubber or some other soft material cut to form fit around the object contained. However, I think you can get metal cases of that sort (generally from electronics and musical equipment retailers) that have a thin foam lining inside but no shape to them. They come in various sizes, but most of them designed to hold rack-mounted equipment and thus the width and length of a medium suitcase. If they're close to being as tall as they are long, they usually come as cubes with handles on the sides and wheels on the bottom. The exteriors are aluminum, usually very reflective, although I think sometimes you can get them in high-gloss black. They do make them custom, but you don't have time for that; they also make them four and five feet tall, but in that case they usually come as rack mounts, the front and back clamping on and coming off, handles on both sides so that two people can lift them together or they can be carried horizontally.

Do you want suitcase-sized, cubes, or something tall, and how many do you want?

I don't remember who knew silkscreening, but I do recall you learning it. That's kind of tough for me to place, because I'm not sure how it's done--but I think probably it uses pneumatic equipment?

The silkscreening I learned was on an improvised silkscreen made by Earl (Greame). It had nothing pneumatic and was entirely manual. (Although I don't remember us making any 'clichés' (negatives or positives, my theoretical knowlegde is shacky). Those need chemical treatment to get the image that is to be printed.

As for the crates, I'd take enough for all my stuff. I think that would range between 3 and 5. Depending on the size. I'd have two cubes I think (for photographic material and other arts related material) and one suitcase sized for the clothing. And one for my other stuff, also a cube. (Laptop, Ukulele, books ...) I might keep my laptop in it's bag, but the bag might be in the crate. I'd put a lock on the crates unless they already have locks on them.

So in total that would be three cubes and a suitcase. All with locks.

I'm thinking that silkscreening is something similar to painting pottery, in terms of the technological sophistication required; that makes it T1@4, and I'll give you a 1@3 SAL in it.

We'll also add
- Aluminum packing case, padded, 2.5' cube with side handles and wheels, to contain photographic equipment
- Aluminum packing case, padded, 2.5' cube with side handles and wheels, to contain art supplies
- Aluminum packing case, padded, 2.5' cube with side handles and wheels, for personal gear
- Aluminum packing case, padded, 2.5'x1.5'x9" suitcase style, for clothing
Padlocks run about $4 to $8 each, depending on quality and where you get them (they actually run a much wider range, but I'm figuring these are the sort you probably have in mind). The cases do have locks, but they're the sort of locks you find on diaries and such, easily picked, easily broken, really there to keep things from popping open accidentally. They're designed to take padlocks also. The only question really is whether you want key or combination locks.

I'd bet the cubes are around $40 apiece and the suitcase $25, so with $20 worth of locks we reduce that additional sum of jewelry and coins from $1610 to $1445.

combination locks is what I had in mind. If I'd be really paranoid, I'd go for both, but I suppose the character wouldn't have thought about that.

Also, I remembered a skill I probably haven't mentioned. It's more of a gift God granted me shortly after leaving here. I refer to it as discernement of spirits. In essence I can sense the prescence of an evil force on some objects, people and even once, a place.

I haven't yet encountered a feeling of holyness except for the prayerroom of my church. It's not much an extra feeling, but an easier connection, less resistance to pray etc.
The feeling of evil is a piercing or squeezing of the hart (or the place where you feel some things). A feeling of blessing I frequently have had is a cold sensation spreading from my hart. Like a spring. I take it to be the living water.

Other then feeling I've sometimes seen both the evil and the good prescence in people. The evil only once, as if there was a dark shadow moving behind/in the eyes of a person. The good is not exactly seeing, but it's something I've seen people radiate. You know how heat rippes the air? Something like that but then more radiant like something beaming from the persons. An intensity towqards God, a burning passion for the Lord. If seen this with 3 or 4 persons.

I know it's hard to believe, so I'll leave it to you wheter you add it or not.

I can turn this into a discussion about absolute thruth and the consequences thereof, to reply on you John, but I don't know if this is the place to discuss wheter there would be something absolute or not, and anyway, my arguments would come from well known writers who have written it all before. I don't know if Multiverser is relativistic/post-modern or stands by an absolute thruth. First glance suggests relativism, which sprouted the idea of multiverses in the minds of some sientists.

But again, this might not be the place. If you want to discuss about this, I might open a thread if Mark permits.

Combination locks it is.

To address the big question first, I would say that Multiverser is based on a concept of an absolute truth which is bigger than any one person or system can contain. There is one single absolute good Creator God, but since He is infinite no faith has a complete understanding of Him (and no ethical monotheism is completely wrong). That Creator God created an unknown number of supernatural beings who might be termed "gods" relative to mortals, and probably more kinds of them than of mortal beings. He also conferred upon some of these authority to manage parts of reality, in many different ways, including partnerships, committees (pantheons), single ruling lesser deities, henotheisms, and whatever else can be imagined. Some of them rebelled against Him, but because He has given them authority He must honor His own promises for however long He has set.

I will list a 1@5 Discernment of Good and Evil Natures M7@9. Does this just happen unbidden, or does it happen when you are praying generally, or do you have to think about it or somehow "use" it, and if so how? And don't worry--I've had people bring some far less believable skills to the game, and I've allowed them to include some I didn't believe.

As to John's question about what is good and what is evil, I'll stick with the original Advanced Dungeons & Dragons definitions: good is an attitude of beneficence and altruism, evil an attitude of selfishness. Hitler might have been a hero if the world that followed him extolled selfishness as the appropriate way of life (for which I recommend the world Post-Sympathetic Man) or if the world which followed him believed that he acted with an eye toward bringing the greatest good to the greatest number of people and that there was sense to his approach.

It is unbidden. Otherwise I would've just concerned it to be answers to prayer. (Which I can't remember having in this form) Usually answers to prayer are through visions or an unexplainable way of just knowing.

EDIT: Next to unbidden it seems to not be active or picking up allways. I can for example walk past a porn store without having the feelings of evil, while I can walk into a store full of Hardrock and Metal clothing and be entirely uncomfortable and looking forward to leaving. I can see someone verbally misusing her child and not feel a thing while I can see three people at a station and feel (and identify!) the spirit of rebellion.

I tend to believe that it points out the not obvious (to me) evil. Even though while I sometimes know something is bad the feeling is still there, as to not make me doubt. I have more experience with the evil side, although it might also be just the most noticable because it can cause great discomfort. It also works in combination with my conscience, where if I'm wrong, my conscience triggers the feeling of evil. Then again, sometimes I have the same feeling, but a knowledge to press on what I'm doing because the opression is from 'the rulers of this world'. Spirits or demons, or principalities or powers trying to discourage me. Most of the time, if not every time I can distinguish them.

Noted. You should mention it as a question when you are in situations where you think it might be relevant--to remind me. "Do I have any feelings of good/evil in regard to this person/place?" is a reasonable way to put it.
