Opinion Piece #1
Opinion Piece #1
The Slow, Lingering Death of The Gaming Outpost.
Welcome one and all to the first in an occasional series of opinion pieces for The Gaming Outpost. Each will cover a single topic, and consist of my take on the matter. This first entry will concern itself with the situation at The Gaming Outpost vis a vis its staff and the folks who visit.
First I shall chew out Aaron and friends.
What the hell are you doing? When’s the last time you actually contributed some material? You have a job. Big whoop. It aint stopping you from setting yourself down before your computer and typing something up. Furthermore, it has to be a daily exercise. Set aside one hour each day to write. Do nothing but write for that hour. Make sure that you have nothing that needs to be taken care of during that hour, other than writing. Disconnect the phone, turn off the tv, ignore the front door. Let it be known to everyone you know that for an hour everyday you are not to be disturbed. Not even if Steve Jackson has just been elected the first gamer President of the United States and he wants you to be his V.P. Culture a reputation as a churlish cur and glory in it. The Gaming Outpost needs content on a daily basis. Guess who gets to provide it?
No bitching. The more you bitch the longer it will take you to produce that content. The sooner you stop and start writing, the sooner it’ll get done and up on GO.
Now for the regulars.
How many of you signed up to write for GO? How many of you have followed through? You’re lying. The last time I looked there was only one regular writer, with occasional pieces from others. There just isn’t enough being produced for GO to get and keep an audience. For your information, I’m not talking about posting in the GO message boards. I’m talking about posting articles, adventures, opinion pieces, etc to the library. Not only free material, by the way, but pay articles as well. For people to subscribe to GO they need an incentive. That’s why this new series of mine is going to be pay all the way.
An online publication such as The Gaming Outpost must have a regular supply of new material to be viable. You need to do some serious writing for that material to appear on a regular basis. So write up that adventure. Type up that house rule. Got some home brew sitting on your hard drive? Make it presentable and submit it.
And stop bitching about how hard it is. Of course it’s hard. If it were easy everybody’d be doing it. You want to get any good at it, you’re going to have to work at it, and work hard.
Now shut up and start cracking. The next time I post an article in the GO library I expect to see this way down the list.
What’s coming up next time?
Posting by the clueless and prideful buffoons.
Till then I remain,
Alan Kellogg
