03-30-99 03:14 PMOkay, Gentle Readers...it's been too quiet lately, so here's a nasty one:
What RPG needs to be retroactively aborted, and why?
You can choose terrible games, bad rules, or even decent games that are too popular for your taste--whatever you really dislike that you'd like to see killed off.
I'd like any RPGs about or related to Games Workshop burned to death in a skillet. I hate them so much, I don't need their infantile gun fantasy bullshit infecting RPGs...it's bad enough I have to put up with White Wolf.
Okay...flame on!

03-30-99 05:19 PMWarhammer Fantasy Role-Play.
Not because its a Games Workshop game (though published by other folks under license now), but because its stats are so damn haphazard. If you're gonna have a baker's dozen of characteristics, they should be on the same scale at the very least.
Then you have the systems, where you have to use three different scales, four modifier systems, and a high-end HP graphing calculator just to take a whiz.
If you're gonna publish an RPG, for God's sake decide on a system to use, rather than foisting everything that sounded good when you were blitzed out of your gourd one saturday night.
Them's my opinions. If I stepped on your toes, move your feet.

03-30-99 06:20 PMMaul of America, for those who are fortunate to never have heard of it, is a board game produced by Jolly Roger Games (may they rot in Mundania forver!) where you assume the role of either a human, or a horde of zombies. The humans and zombies move through a shopping mall (hence the Maul pun), where the humans are trying to gather supplies and escape the mall, while the zombies do nothing but kill, kill, kill the humans (or try to)!
This game is bad because the board is shoddy, the graphic presenation for the board is awful, the cards are flimsy pieces of paper, and the game is way overpriced, not to mention the game SUCKS!
And that, my friends, is what Maul of America is all about. You'd have more fun playing PONG with your eyes closed.

03-30-99 08:28 PMSounds like somebody did a knock-off of SPI's, "Dawn of the Dead", based on the movie of the same name.
It didn't use cards, as I recall. You can be sure it had better production values.

03-30-99 09:01 PMI'd like to see Trinity go down. Maybe it's on the way, I don't know. I'm glad I only paid $15 for my copy. It's not that the setting or rules aren't workable and even interesting. It's the frightening trend of WW making a game and only putting parts of it in the main book, essentially forcing serious players to buy more books. Vague, repetitive and filled with fluff . . .

03-30-99 09:20 PMWell, I'd like to see the entire Palladium line burned to a crisp and blown away. [Well, maybe spare a few copies of TMNT, which at least had some amusement value.] Especially RIFTS, which seems to breed munchkins the way my kitchen breeds flies.
The implosion of Palladium may already be happening, since this past quarter, for the first time they held less RPG market share than SJG.

03-30-99 10:26 PMBurn Palladium burn. I hope those posers go down in a blaze of power gamers. While thier games may have some redeming values, TMNT and Macross 2 are the only ones that come to mind, you wonder if they ever playtested a game before releasing it. If they did why didn't they ask the players for feedback instead of if they liked Long's art?

04-01-99 10:28 AMSad thing is, Palladium has a pretty damn stable audience, as does Games Workshop. Seems there is a big, honkin' niche for that sort of thing.
My most hated game company of the moment is actually R. Talsorian. Why? Because they haven't updated their f**king website in a year, they let good games like Castle Falkenstein die without even a PRESS RELEASE and they are high on my flake list.
Second place goes to West Eng Games, with whom I placed an order for ALL their TORG products two days ago and NO ONE has called or emailed me back yet any kind of response.
I both called and emailed. SIgh.
Bad customer service will be the death of this industry.

04-01-99 01:54 PMI got to agree with that about R.Talsorian games. When are they actualy going to tell us about the DragonBall Z RPG they anounced last year? Heck, Guardians of order gave fairly decent updates on the progress of their Sailor Moon game, and they are a smaller and younger company.

04-01-99 05:36 PMHello? TSR? Truly Shitty Roleplaying?
...or are you all saying that you enjoy an archaic game (and a poorly designed one at that) that has no clear themes, no heart...and don't give me that "well it depends on the players and GM" crap. AD&D should be buried before it infects another breed of impressionable minds. You wanna play AD&D? It's called Nintendo...same goes for Palladium's RIFTs and just about all the crap SF and fantasy games out there.
...and another thing, all "universal rules system" games. You either do something well or you do a whole lotta stuff badly. It's like trying to make a movie that everyone will like...nobody with half a brain will want to see it.
And speaking of bad games, why not wipe out all the bad gamers? You know...the ones who go to cons without bathing...as if looking like something big, hairy and smelly was a part of the whole fantasy deal. You want fantasy? Okay...how about a cavernous hotel lobby filled with bearded SCA members with bad B.O. cramming their faces full of cheeze-puffs and relating tales of their 43rd level Drow Paladin/Bard/Illusionist (and of course they play AD&D but wouldn't ya know it -- they've made their own "special adjustments...for realism's sake" -- of course, of course). Don't even get me started with the Vampire LARPers...
- stepping on toes tonight, baby...

04-01-99 07:48 PMGeez, Jared you say so much that I've always wanted to form into words.. Im envious.
Wait- theres something out there.
I can feel it.. its a.. a whisper in the wind. Revolution is in the air!
Yes, the Gamer-geek syndrome is definitely the worst aspect of the whole RPG thing.
It's sad and embarassing and I dont know what to do about that because when I turn my back on the goofus who starts going on and on about his 88th level mage at the bookstore or at a party I am clearly thinking self-preservation.
I think Jared picked a good worst-offenders list: TSR, Palladium and Vampire. Gurps I found unplayable myself.. but then.. I never got turned on by it very much and never attempted to run it.

04-02-99 02:20 AMLet's give another round of I'm sooo disapointed in you to R. Talsorian games. The makers of my beloved Cyberpunk 2020 have for all intents and purposes abandoned the gaming world for their day jobs. I think what makes their dissappearance so upsetting is that they had good games with good settings. Another round of head shaking for the boys who showed so much potential.

04-02-99 08:53 AMUgh. I'm a notorious GURPS hater. I played it for a year, and in that year I still don't know what the hell was going on, rules-wise. I have a serious problem with one combat taking two gaming sessions. In general, I so don't give a f**k about hit locations....
I have never gotten the hang of generic systems, nor figured out the mentality behind them. I have yet to meet a good one - GURPS or RIFTS. It's some sort of collectable mentality which drives these things, and keeps the fanboy gamer geeks coming back.
*sigh* Maybe I just like Feng Shui too much.

04-02-99 09:06 AMDamn, I'm impressed! There is some heat finally starting to show up in this forum--although I must admit that everyone who has been posting has always had really sharp things to say. The level of clear discourse continues to astound me.
I'm going to post a new topic on generic game systems, but first let me say that while I have deep and abiding feelings for AD+D, they are based on nostalgia--and I suspect that a growing part of their customer base is increasingly powergamers and people who yearn for 1st edition 'good old days'. Witness their reissuing of 'classic' modules and increasing dependence on people remembering the early days of the hobby.
That's good for money now, but I don't think it's a smart long-term strategy. Nostalgia won't work forever--especially since the source material is so thin. I mean, come on--Keep on the Borderlands sucks. I played it as my first game, but it still sucks.

Me? I think that the Dark Horror games and Magic have ruined the industry, even though they did get a LOT more people into the industry in the first place... they focus on the power-gamers...
Ditto for Palladium and AD&D... Levels... yuck.

04-02-99 05:50 PMTarget Games AB. No sooner than a year after they release the second eddition of Mutant Chronicles they kill off the game and drop their support for it. THey kill the game in favor of their new sacred cash cow WarZone. Then there is WarZone second edditions. The changed evarything in the game except the names. New rules, new books, new ( and bad ) background and the boxxed set witch traps you into getting two armies that you may not evan use. And half the changes they made were just to appese the people who did nothing but complain about game balance, and there wernt that many balance problems to buigin with.
