"Is this to be an empathy test? Capillary dilation of the so-called blush response...fluctuation of the pupil...involuntary dilation of the iris..."
"We call itVOIGT KAMPFFfor short..."
Voigt Kampff is a roleplaying game about the emotional responses of replicants. Players initiate subplots based on a certain emotion, roleplay through it, and determine the effect of that experience upon their replicant characters.
The Nexus 6 was designed to copy human beings in every way except their emotions. But the makers reckoned that after a few years they might develop their own emotional responses - hate, love, fear, anger, envy...
You are a replicant, ammassing the experiences which humans take for granted. You have a personality matrix which represents your replicant's ability to have emotional responses equal to those of a human.
Your personality matrix consists of three levels. Each level consists of a set of personality traits. Each personality trait is rated either 0 or 1. The three traits on the middle level are sub-traits of the top level. There are six traits on the lower level, paired into three sub-sets; one for each trait on the middle level. For a trait on a level to become 1, all the immediate sub-traits on the level below must be raised to 1.
The top level of all replicants matrix is the same. It consists of 1 personality trait, named Humanity. This trait starts rated at 0.
The middle level of the matrix consists of 3 personality traits of the player's choice. These traits are the immediate sub-traits of humanity, so should be largely encompassing, such as Love, Hate, or Fear. These traits all start at 0.
The bottom level of the matrix consists of 3 subsets of 2 personality traits each (6 traits in total, each pair making a subset for each middle level personality trait). These traits should be the sub-traits of the middle level traits, and can therefore be quite narrow in scope.
For example, if you had Love, Hate and Fear as your middle level traits, you could have Compassion & Empathy (for Love), Vengeance & Jealousy (for Hate), and Anxiety & [I've run out of ideas, please help. Nervousness maybe?](for Fear). These 6 lower level traits may be rated at either 0 or 1, but only one trait in each pair can be rated at 1.
To raise Love to 1, both Compassion & Empathy must be rated at 1. To raise Humanity to 1, Love, Hate and Fear must all be rated at 1.
Pris exits the building and starts across the street. A spinner rockets past overhead. She reacts nervously and watches the spinner slide away...A weird street cleaning machine grinds past. Pris watches the machine with curiosity, then huddles under the trash.
Replicants must experience to develop human emotional responses. To start the game, choose a lower level personality trait which has a rating of 0. Tell your GM that you're activating a subplot based on that trait. He'll pull a subplot based on that trait out of his arse (the way all good GMs can). If at the end of the subplot, you believe your replicant has experienced enough to develop a human response based on that trait, raise it from 0 to 1. If both traits in a pair are now 1, you may activate a subplot based on the middle level trait above that pair. When all three traits on the middle level become 1, you may play out one more subplot based on your humanity. Hopefully you'll be able to get there before your 4 year lifespan runs out.
I've seen things you people wouldn't believe. Attack ships on fire off the shoulder of Orion. I watched C-beams glitter in the dark near Tannhäuser Gate. All those moments will be lost in time like tears in rain. Time to die...
