Mitzu fails to make the connection, but you succeed without difficulty. Then you connect with the clairvoyance to see what's happening back at the base (same old same old, of course). However, although he saw how you did it, he didn't figure out how to match that with his own mind today.

I'm guessing that you're attempting to detect the use of a psionic skill in the immediate area; since there is nothing to detect you don't detect anything, but it might still be possible for you to learn how to do the skill. Is this a correct assessment of your intention?

Your assessment is correct. We can try again tomorrow, same steps.

My mistake--you already have that skill:

1@2 Detect Psionics Psi 3@10 Bah Ke’gehn
can recognize when psionics are being used in an area, detecting the user if he is there and/or the effects if they are there

It works; nothing is being used in the immediate area.

Ah alright. Continue with training, try daily to teach Mitzu clairvoyance as described above until he gets it or botches.

It takes a week of efforts before Mitzu manages this skill, but it's there. He can see clairvoyantly.

He laughs out loud, and exclaims that it's incredible and he can think of all kinds of things he could have done with this when he was back home.

"Yeah, it can be handy in a number of situations."

We'll try the same routine with clairaudience, try it daily after training until success or botch.

You have trouble getting the clairaudience going over the next few days, but then you manage it on the third--and Mitzu fails to read it. You open the telepathic connection, and he picks up the skill without difficulty. He wonders aloud whether the CIA had people who could do this.

It occurs to me to ask whether I ought to be creating a Mitzu character sheet in your file, given that you've taught him a few skills and I'm still working from the book version of him. If you're thinking that he should be expanded, bring back to my recollection anything he has learned that I should include, and I'll give him a sheet.

--M. J. Young

I don't think he learned more than telepathy, mind-reading, and the two I just taught him. I'm torn about picking up followers from a player perspective; sometimes the pros outweigh the cons and other times it's hard to justify. Let's play it safe and draw up a sheet for him.

"Yeah, I wonder about that sometimes, too. I used to see psychics advertised back home, but I'd always heard they were phoney. Maybe that was just a cover, so that other people wouldn't try to learn what they know.

"I know a few more tricks, but some of them are hard to do here even after you know how."

I'll try to teach him simple tk (using small bits of rock crafted from the pillar; I recall I was using some for something else earlier), levitation, and flight, in that order, over the course of our training. Provided there are no snags, I'm looking to finish up the next month of training after he learns these.

You have a great deal of difficulty connecting over the next couple days, and then--well, we'll get back to that. Meanwhile, I've put together the notes on Mitzu, and will print you a copy.

As you are attempting to contact Mitzu's mind, something slips between you, and he suddenly has a look of total terror on his face. He screams and starts running away from you, away from the pillar, out across the flaming terrain.
