In the chaos, a woman, overdressed in multilayered petticoats, comes blundering toward you looking behind her over her shoulder at the ruckus.
As my brother said (paraphrasing) "If you're in combat, and someone is coming towards you, I don't care if it's a kid, a grandma, or whatever. Shoot them." I think I'm going to take his advice. No warning shots. I'm going for a center mass kill shot. For all I know, she's one of the demons in disguise.
You mentioned that some people were heading for doors, and some were hitting the ground. That means that if I wait a minute or two, the din should calm down. Anyone that invades my space gets shot. I'm waiting for some of the people to leave. Then things will calm down. Walk over to where I think Bearbreath fell, and start kicking the ground. See if I can find his body. When I find it, pump a few more bullets into him, just to be sure. Then, wait for the chaos to calm down.
When enough people leave that it's relatively quiet, yell for Pedro to come over and get the boom stick. That should leave me, him, the "princes" and the palace guards.
Somewhere on your body. It was not a crippling injury, and under Multiverser rules if it is not crippling we do not need to waste time figuring out where it is. If you wish to know where it is, for some practical reason, tell my why you need to know it and I'll dig out the chart I use about once a year and roll.
Well, I don't know if this qualifies as a practical reason, but for all the time you spent typing that, you probably could have gotten out the chart and rolled. Then we wouldn't be wasting time on it now. I'm just curious where I got hit.
John - if you want to know where you were hit but MJ doesn't care, why not just make it up? Decide where you were hit based on how you see the scene playing out in your head, and mention where he hit you somewhere in your post. John IV does this kind of stuff all the time, and it saves MJ the trouble of rolling while letting you know exactly what's going on (and giving you a little more creative involvement in the game, which is always fun).
Personally, I'm picturing somewhere on your left leg or lower left side as Bearbreath ducks in for a strike while avoiding the gun in your right hand - but of course, the point is that you can decide (since MJ doesn't care and won't be bothered).
I'm a fast typist.
You are in the middle of combat. There are only two ways you would be cognizant of where your injuries land:
- They are impairing your ability;
- You stop fighting long enough to check.
- If your wounds impair your ability, that is something I tell you--it is called a disabling injury.
If you want to know otherwise, you will have to tell me that you are going to stop fighting for half a minute to check your injuries--during which time you will get no attacks and no defensive or evasive maneuvers, while your opponents can continue to fight.
Your call.
Your first shot at the woman misses.
"He's attacking Lady Bennington," someone shouts.
Ten men wearing chain armor are running toward you with halberds lowered.
In reference to a previous statement you made,
- no armor provides complete protection against any weapon, and
- no weapon is completely unimpeded by any armor
If you think about it, I'm sure you will agree that shooting a man through a layer of metal is going to be more difficult than shooting one through a layer of cloth, with any bullets.
--M. J. Young
MJ, I guess you didn't see it, but Scott made a comment. He suggested that I picture the scene, and envision where I got hit for myself, based on how I picture the fight progressing. Going by that, I think I'm going to go with Scott's suggestion that I got hit in the left leg.
Are they all coming from the same direction? Single file, ten abreast, how are they coming? Are they just coming out of the woodwork? I'm hoping for the same direction, single file. Coming out of the woodwork would be my fear.
With a loud cry of "DEATH TO ALL DEMONS!!!!!!!!!!!!!"
Single file and from the same direction, dominoes. Shoot the first guy in line, shoot the next guy, shoot the next guy, etc. I've got 26 bullets, and there's 10 of them. I wouldn't be surprised if the first bullet takes out 2 or 3 guys if they're coming single file.
Ten abreast, shoot the one in the middle. Hopefully that would increase the chance to hit. Then shoot the one in the middle to the left, the one in the middle to the right, etc. I'm hoping that shooting like that would increase the chances to hit. Maybe I might miss the guy I'm aiming at, but hit the guy next to him.
Coming out of the woodwork, shoot the closest guy, then the next closest guy, then the next closest guy, etc.
Hopefully they will cease their attack once they realize what I'm capable of doing. I've most certainly got their attention now, don't I? Have you ever read The Connecticut Yankee in King Aurthur's Court? Seems like the kind of book you would have read. He gets attacked by ALL of the knights of the Round Table. All 500 of them. He has 2 revolvers, with a total of 12 bullets. He shoots the first guy, the second guy, the third guy. After he shoots the fourth guy, the knights figure out that they might not be able to win this, and halt their attack. That's the effect I'm hoping for.
Not arguing with you on the point of the armor, but I shot a 9mm through a military ammo can. Designed to store ammunition. It went in one side and out the other, like the can wasn't there. The MAK 90 is miles more powerful than that. Chain mail would be next to useless against bullets. The rifle I'm shooting shoots light armor piercing bullets standard, so figure that into your calculations when you do the math. Also, I just called Uncle Bob he said "It would go through chain mail like it wasn't there." Just wanted to add that, for when you crunch the numbers.
What's Pedro doing? If he has anything up his sleeve that could help this, I'd sure appreciate it.
Also, if I'm not surrounded, I'm trying to retreat. Fall back. You mentioned that the exit doors were relatively close to where I was. Do they swing in towards me, or out away from me? What are the exit doors like? I imagine pretty thick and heavy. See if I can escape. If possible, go through the doors, bar them on the other side, and shoot through them.
MJ, Two Posts
If at all possible, I'd like to put Bearbreath's corpse between myself and the attacking soldiers. I imagine tripping over something that wasn't there might affect their attitude a bit.
The soldiers are coming at you from three primary directions, more like squads of hustling men than like formations--not in any kind of lines at all.
With all due respect to your well-informed uncle, to say that a bullet would pass through chain mail "like it wasn't there" is an exaggeration. Anything denser than air is going to slow any projectile more than air would, and that is what matters here.
As to your oft-repeated example of shooting through the ammo can, you overlook something most people overlook, and it comes to why it is that Superman's shirt doesn't have holes in it from being shot all the time: the top layer of something is strengthened by the support behind it. The bullet can tear through the empty can because when it presses in on the side, the side gives; if the side were supported by solid material behind it, it would not give, and is more likely to withstand penetration.
I'm unclear: are you shooting at guards, or looking for the dead body, or if you are doing both, how are you managing this?
--M. J. Young
why it is that Superman's shirt doesn't have holes in it from being shot all the time
Actually, it's because Superman's body generates a bioelectric field that protects anything in its proximity. By your theory, a bullet that just grazed him would rip the suit along its flightpath (I used to be a huge Superman geek) but I do see the point of your example.
The mental picture I have of what this room looks like is a huge room with several rows of tables in lines. That would impede the progress of the soldiers. They would have to attack parallel to the tables. Bearbreath's corpse is laying on the floor next to the row of tables. If the attacking soldiers are on this particular side of the table, and attacking from the opposite direction, then Bearbreath's corpse would be laying on the ground in front of them, and between them and I. What I'm hoping is that at least one of the squads is attacking from that direction, and will trip over Bearbreath's corpse. I wasn't doing anything with the corpse, other than trying to move so that it is positioned between me and them. I should have a rough idea of where Bearbreath's corpse is. Damn, I was hoping to get that cloak for myself.
Whichever squad is coming closest, shoot at them first. Retreat and fall back. See if I can get out the door.
Oh and something else. I'm not going to be taken prisoner. I'm not going to be taken prisoner, no way, no how. If that means that I'm using bare fists against a guy in full plate armor, so be it, but I'm fighting to my last breath.
What is Pedro up to? If he has anything that can help, I'd love to see it.
Also, I have the backpack over my arm, and I'm carrying it with me. I'm disowning the boom stick and all of the shotgun shells. They should fall out of the backpack if I verse. I'm hoping that Pedro can figure out what to do with it. He's probably going to need it. I just know I won't need them. If I run completely out of ammo for either of the two guns, disown them as well. If I don't have ammo, there's no point in keeping the gun. If I'm in a world where I can get ammo for them, then I can replace the gun as well.
You can't disown on person equipment unless it is contested. You can disown the boom stick because it is not on your person; you can disown the robes because they don't belong to you but to Pedro. You can't disown shotgun shells in your backpack if they are on your person and no one is claiming them.
There are four rows of tables perpendicular to the head table; it is thus possible to walk from the head table down the center of the room to the exit doors. If someone were processing this direction, you would be at the end of the table on his right, with the table between you and him. There is another table between you and the wall. Pedro was in the seat next to you, but has moved closer to the head table so as to be out of the range of your fights.
Babbareth fell somewhere between the tables, where you are, toward the head table. You cannot see his body, of course, because of the invisibility. No soldiers are coming down that aisle. One group is coming down along the outside wall, across the table from you; one is coming down the center aisle (which is where your boom stick is lying). The nearest group is coming at you from the exit, and so impedes your egress in that direction. If you fall back from them, you will be moving 1) away from the door, 2) over Babbareth's body, 3) toward Pedro, 4) toward the other two groups of guards, and 5) toward the head table where the princes are standing.
It should also be noted that halberds are a type of pole axe--a long-handled weapon designed to deal damage at distances longer than a sword can reach, to keep an opponent at bay while striking him. These soldiers will be able to reach you across the table, and although you can step away from one group by moving back from the table, this action will bring you closer to the other group, once they are in position.
I don't see the repeat factor on the MAK90 (the gun you are using); how many rounds per minute can it deliver maximum for the very best user at full auto, assuming an unlimited clip? Your clips are 30 rounds, but I need to know how many shots it would make in a minute if it did not run out of bullets.
You're a bit busy to spend too much time looking at Pedro, but he seems to be praying. He shouts again something about getting the cloak, and returns to his prayers.
You start firing at the men between you and the door. The first shot catches someone, rather seriously but not crippling; the men start weaving and dodging quite effectively as they close the gap--your next four bullets find no targets, although they do slow the approach of the guards.
--M. J. Young
The MAK 90 is not full auto. It fires as fast as I can pull the trigger. I don't know what the full auto repeat factor would be.
Ya know what? If Pedro wants me to get that cloak, then by God that's what I'm gonna do. Try to find Bearbreath's body by kicking the ground where I think it is. Keep shooting. When I find Bearbreath's body, go down on my knees and see if I can get the cloak. I'm still shooting. I've got 21 bullets left.
If you really need the full auto repeat factor, an AK-47 (full auto MAK 90) fires between 400-500 rounds a minute, according to Uncle Bob.
Is that a new use for shooting a person with the rifle? That's not something I've ever done before.
Also, I can shoot that with one hand. If I get the impression that they are just going to charge me and stab, I'd grab Bearbreath's arm or something. That would make him on-person equipment when I versed. I want that cloak.
Thanks for tracking the bullet count for me; that will be useful.
Kicking with your feet you quickly find the body. You bend down, feel the edge of the cloak, and with a yank roll the demon out of it.
Demon and cloak both become visible. There is a gasp, and the approaching men hesitate.
The cloak is a read cape with hood that can be thrown over head and shoulders and pulled around with the hands; you see no fasteners. It is large enough that you could probably conceal a second person within it, if necessary, although movement would be awkward.
You keep pulling the trigger on the gun, firing ten more shots at nothing in particular, but in the general direction of the approaching guards.
--M. J. Young
"Are we gonna have a problem now guys???" I yell in a smart-ass tone. "Geeze, for all I knew, Lady Bitchington was one of these fucktards!!!!!" (excuse the language, but that's what I would be saying given the situation.)
Put the cloak on, and pray that it works. (Just a "Please God let this work" prayer, 6 seconds) If anyone else moves, 11 bullets say they don't get very far.
You throw the cloak over your shoulders and head; immediately there is a gasp, and the soldiers slow and start scanning the area around you.
You turn to see the other soldiers still advancing, although these too have lost sight of you and are trying to determine where you went.
Beyond them, at the head table, you now see the king, the princesses, and three demons.
--M. J. Young
They can't see me, but can I see myself? That is, can I see my rifle, my hands, feet, etc? That would influence tomorrow's actions significantly.
Try to slip past the guards. Just quietly walk around them, and around the table. I want to find a safe place with an unobstructed line of sight at the three demons at the table.
I know the MAK 90 still has 11 bullets, and the 9mm 6, but I'm reloading. Eject the clips from both guns, and put them into my backpack, and take out fresh magazines for both. The reloaded MAK 90 now has 31 bullets (1 in the chamber, and 10 left in the clip I took out) and the 9mm has 16 (Again, 1 in the chamber, 5 left in the clip. Unless I happened to grab the 14 round clip, but otherwise, 16 bullets there)
Are there any mirrors, glass windows, shiny metal surfaces on which I could see a reflection? I just want to see for myself that I'm invisible.
I'm finding a safe spot with an unobstructed line of sight at the three demons at the table. Then, just sit back for a minute, and wait for MJ to tell me if I can see myself.
MJ Two posts
How are the demons sitting? Side by side at the table? Princesses between them? I'd like for them to be sitting side by side with no one between them, but I guess that's up to the dice.
Actually, the seating arrangements are not up to the dice, but up to royal protocol--and the head table was already described thus:
- Prince Princess Prince Princess King Princess Prince
Yes, you can see everything that is inside the cloak with you, and everything that is outside the cloak. You can also see through the disguises of the demons.
I'm assuming your backpack is on your back; I don't think you can get to it while wearing the cloak. I believe you have clips more accessible than that, though. I'm assuming you at least have your pants on under Pedro's robes.
There are some silver platters on the tables, but these have food on them. There are no mirrors in this hall, and no glass windows--those things are not yet in common use.
You move between the tables quietly, past Pedro, past the guards (who as you recall are coming up on the other sides of the tables) until you are at the end of the tables nearest the head table. It has been a difficult trek, as you have had to dodge people running at you who apparently were completely unaware of your presence--one man crashed into you and fell to the ground confused and dazed--but you get there without serious incident.
--M. J. Young
Actually MJ, I have the backpack slung over my left arm. I took it off when Pedro and I arrived, and picked it back up after I killed Bearbreath. Since you didn't say otherwise, I'm going to assume that the guns are reloaded as I specified.
Walk right up to the head table. I want to get at the far end of point-blank range. This should be no-miss distance, but out of arm's reach of the demons. Raise the MAK90. Blam, Blam, Blam. Three point-blank head shots, three dead demons. Crude, but effective. I would be standing in front of the middle demon, starting with the one on my right, middle, my left.
The MAK90 and all of the other guns are blessed to be more effective against demons.
MJ Two Posts
It just occurred to me that I might not quite have the drop on these demons like I believe I do. They might not fully understand what that MAK90 does, but they do know what their cloaking cloak does. They probably know that I can see them. I shouldn't have to tell you that whatever happens, I'm not going to stop shooting.
It also occurred to me that the cloaking cloak probably has several bullet holes in it, and might be covered with demon blood. Man, I'm glad I'm wearing Pedro's robe.... Is that the case? What you described sounds more like a cape, and if I shot the guy in the chest, bullet holes and demon blood could be at a minimum, but I'm curious.
Thanks for the clarification on the backpack.
You have not noticed any damage or blood on the red cape, but you didn't really have time to study it.
You put a bullet in the center of the forehead of the nearest demon, the one sitting near the center of the table. He howls in pain and anger and starts looking for you.
The demon to your left moves as you pull the trigger, and your bullet deflects off the stone wall somewhere beyond him. You shoot again and catch him in the shoulder, and making him very angry as well. Swinging to the third, you notice for the first time that that one has wings. It too starts moving, upward, and your first shot passes within inches of its head, your second missing, your third cutting through the wing.
You have wounded all three, and the nearest is trying to home in on your location, probably from the sound of your gun. There is panic at the head table, and a good probability that the princesses will get in the way.
--M. J. Young
MJ, I'm just curious. You told me that I was the first player you've ever run in this world that did not try to marry the princesses, and instead engaged the demons. I'm just wondering which scenario you're enjoying playing more.
Six shots fired, 25 left.
Can the demon still fly with a hole in its wing? How would I know? I can see the damn thing!!!!!!
Well, back away from the table. I need to be 100% certain that I'm out of arm's reach. That didn't go the way I was hoping, but when does it? I would do a "Threat Assessment." (I guess an intuition check) Whichever one of them I deem to be the most likely to do me harm is the next target. If I see any movements towards me, any violent actions on their part, that's the target. I've backed away and moved a bit, so I should be harder to hit. I've also got the bayonet fixed and out, and it is also blessed to be more effective against demons. Perhaps if one of them reaches for me, he might cut his hand on the bayonet. In the unlikely event that one of them happens to impale itself on the bayonet, the preferred method for removing a body from a bayonet was to pull the trigger. That would literally be NO-MISS distance!!!!!
You said there was a fireplace in this room. Where is it in relation to me? I was on the other side of the room, and you said it was far away. Is it closer now? I would imagine that they would put a fireplace at the head of the room, which is where I am now. I have those 4 30-06 bullets. I may decide to throw them into the fireplace as a diversion.

Abishaw, Bearbreath, Cathcart, and Dicalus (I'm sure you can see the obvious nickname I could give the latter. Out of respect for the obscenity standards, I'm not going to.) The last demon's name starts with an E doesn't it? I don't think you ever said its name. I'm just curious. I was just thinking that if its name does start with an E, that means so far, I've engaged them in alphabetical order. Do I get bonus points if I finish it that way?
Since I decided what order you attacked Dicalus and Echevar, no, you don't.
I have no preference on which way the game is played.
The fireplace is along the center of the side wall with the windows; that means when you were at the end of the table it was half way up the room and across three tables from you. Now that you are in the center at the head of the room, it is half way back and across two tables. It's still not near you.
You start backing away from the table, and seeing that the center demon (Cathcart) is about to leap at you, you shoot at him. You wing his arm, and he leaps in your direction.
He hops over the table like it fallen tree branch in his path, but he misjudges the distance and is not within reach; his flailing swing finds only air.
Echevar is getting lift, although he seems to be staying close to the ground, perhaps to give the skill deniability--after all, as far as you know, these demons still look like princes to everyone else present.
--M. J. Young
I knew his name started with an E!!!! And that was just a joke on attacking them in alphabetical order. (Or is there some bonus for doing that?)
24 bullets left.
Back up and keep shooting at Cathcart. Damn, I was really hoping I was close to the fireplace. Try to stay close, but out of arm's reach. I want to be in point blank range on my attacks, but far enough away that he would be hard pressed to hit me.
I should be able to finish Cathcart here, if I get 7 attacks to his one. After he's finished, make my way around to the fireplace. I've got an idea.
AND WHERE THE HELL IS PEDRO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
MJ Two Posts
Not calling you a liar MJ, but I find it very difficult to believe that you have no preferences in this. You told me that I am the first player you have ever had that has not saved the princesses. That means you're doing something entirely different from anything you have ever done in this world. I would have thought that would be refreshing at the very least. Again, not calling you a liar, but kind of in disbelief.
The alphabetical order is a mnemonic device to help the referee. You might or might not have noticed that the princesses, too, are so keyed--the eldest Margaret, the second Nerene, and the youngest Olivia. Their names also were chosen to reflect their personalities to some degree, but since you haven't met them you wouldn't know that part.
Everyone who has attempted to rescue the princess has done so differently and had different adventures. One player failed to determine what had happened to them, and they did not return the next morning, but he escaped his execution, fled into the castle, found the escape route, and then pursued the princesses to rescue them from the demons. No matter what choices anyone makes, the story is always different.
I don't expect you are actually turning your back on Cathcart to look for Pedro. He is probably still attempting to dispel the disguises on the other demons, although you have no idea what other abilities he might have.
Your next shot hits Cathcart squarely in the face, and the demon collapses. You see Echevar gliding toward you from the right, arms sweeping about as if looking for you.
Quite abruptly Dicalus is on your left, as if he appeared from nowhere.
--M. J. Young
It took me a minute to figure out how they got on either side of me. I had envisioned it that I was facing a side wall, but I'm facing the front of the room. That does make a difference, doesn't it?
23 bullets left.
Duck down, and back away between them. When I get enough distance that I can move freely, be very quiet, and head over to the fireplace. I'm still invisible, so that should be a cinch. Take the long way if I have to in order to get around the demons.
Since they seem to think that I'm in between them, maybe they will hit each other whilst looking for me. If one of them accidentally kills the other during that, all the better.
Once I get to the fireplace, assuming I make it, take out the four 30-06 bullets, and just wait. I'll wait praying. I'll be scanning the room, keeping my eyes open, and praying "God, heal my injuries, that I might continue this battle." Wait praying silently for 5 minutes. I'm standing against the wall, trying to be in a position so that no one will be likely to run into me. I'm not kneeling, I'm just standing against the wall praying, and scanning the room with my eyes. I'm just waiting praying for 5 minutes. I want everyone to forget that I am here, or at least wonder what has happened to me.
What's going on in the room?
MJ Two posts
It occurred to me that in every monster movie I've seen, the disguised monster took back its true form upon death. Did Cathcart turn back into a demon when I killed him? It would still look like a demon to me, so I couldn't tell from looking. However, I imagine people's reactions to such a thing would make it fairly obvious. Might the king realize that the other two princes aren't what they appear to be, and send the knights after them?
I don't have a stealth skill for you. If you were not invisible (which does bonus your ability), how good would you be at quietly and surreptitiously sneaking out of a room?
--M. J. Young
I assumed (quite naturally, I thought) that being invisible was the stealth. I guess I'm as good as the next guy. Average amateur ability, whatever that is.
I'm reposting my last two posts to make it easier on your for exactly what I'm doing.

If you think about it, you'll realize that invisibility is only a bonus to stealth skill.I assumed (quite naturally, I thought) that being invisible was the stealth.
Imagine that you are trying to find someone who is hiding in a dark room--not completely lightless but mostly dark. You would listen. You would look for some hint of movement, you might sniff the air. The darkness is the equivalent of invisibility in that context--you cannot see your opponent, but he still needs to be stealthy to escape your detection.
In the same way, you cannot be seen, but you can be heard--even the swishing of your pants when you move. If someone has spilled something on the floor and you step in it, you will leave tracks which can be seen. We've all seen the movies in which the invisible guy walks across the sand and the observer watches the footprints form.
Thus you are invisible, but you must also be stealthy.
The room is in chaos. Some people are on the tables, some under them, some running in circles. It takes you a couple minutes to pick your way over to the fireplace.
As you turn around and scan the room, you perceive that the royal family is gone. This includes the demons. Cathcart's body is still lying on the floor, and to you it appears to be a demon; but Pedro is standing over it praying, so he must be attempting to dispel the disguise.
As you finish your five minutes of prayer you feel your wounds close up and the pain leave your body.
--M. J. Young
As you turn around and scan the room, you perceive that the royal family is gone. This includes the demons.
Well that blows my whole plan all to hell and back now doesn't it? I was hoping to wait 5 minutes, long enough for them to lose interest in me, and let me engage them at a time more of my choosing.
Drop the shotgun shells on the floor in the room where Pedro is. Drop all of them. Just find a safe out of the way place and set them down on the floor. That's dead weight, and maybe Pedro might need it. After I drop the shotgun shells pray "Hey God, you know that prayer I said earlier about making the boom stick dangerous only to demons? Forget about it." (That's the whole prayer, what you just read) I'm also disowning the shotgun shells. I don't want them versing with me. If I'm in a world where I can get a shotgun, I can also get shotgun shells. Maybe Pedro can figure out what to do with the boom stick if he needs it. Too bad I never got to use it in battle. Oh well.
Well, looks like I've got time to spare. Walk out of the room, just slip out of a door and walk away. Find a safe corner to sit down in. I've got 10 bullets in one clip that I removed, and 23 in the clip in the gun. I'm going to consolidate the two. Take 8 out of the 10 round clip and put them into the 23 round clip. I've again got 31 bullets in the MAK 90. Put the two loose bullets in my backpack, and disown the empty magazine. No point in keeping it, it's just dead weight. Find a trashcan or something to throw it in. If I'm in a world where I can replace the ammo, I can also replace the gun.
I'm in the hallway or something. I'm not even in that room. Kneel down and pray. "God, give me direction to the remaining demons, that I might engage and kill them." I'm still invisible, and in a safe corner somewhere, so I shouldn't be found easily. Pray for 10 minutes.
What I'm praying for is for God to lead me to the remaining demons. However God chooses to do it is OK by me. A still small voice, a flashing neon sign that says "Demons: This Way." Whatever God chooses to do to answer this prayer. I want God to lead me to the remaining demons.
I've got my backpack slung over my arm. If I put it on at all, it would just be one strap, so that I could take it off easily. That, in addition to my other on-person equipment.

If I survive this, and the king decides that I deserve a reward, I would like the following. Mr. Smith and family (William included) be brought to the castle, first class, all expenses paid. There, Mr. Smith will be offered the position of king's personal blacksmith, at a large pay increase. If Mr. Smith refuses said offer, that's really OK, because I could totally understand if he wanted to just go home and live his simple life. However, I would invite him to consider the possibilities it would open up for his daughters. The chance to marry lower nobles...... However, if Mr. Smith wants to go home, that's absolutely fine, because I could see him doing just that. I would like to be taught in the ways of knights. I want to become proficient with crossbow, sword, mace and chain, staff, and most other hand-to-hand weapons. (Not horse jousting though!!! No way, no how!!!) That's my wish list if I make it. Perhaps to be amended later.
MJ, you wanted to know what would make me interfere, well, I hope you're picking up on it.
If there's any kind of conflict between Mr. Smith and the current king's personal blacksmith, these are my instructions. If Mr. Smith refuses to become the king's personal blacksmith because he doesn't want to leave his home without the aid of a blacksmith, there is a solution. The current king's personal blacksmith can go and take over Mr. Smith's shop. Mr. Smith, would, of course, be allowed to go home and retrieve any personal items that had been left behind. If the current king's personal blacksmith objects, he can arm wrestle Mr. Smith for it. Let's see... Mr. Smith, a dedicated country blacksmith vs a pampered king's blacksmith.... Who ya got? That's my wish list. If I make it.
The daughter of the king's personal blacksmith marries the son of the king's personal horse trainer. See what I mean by lower nobles Mr. Smith? they're still working class folk, something you respect, but higher working folk.

I keep thinking that I should go back to my room and get the crossbow. I don't know why, as the MAK90, or even the 22 would be a far better weapon, but I keep thinking that I should do it. How about a roll to see if I do it? Sorry about the three posts, but it's been on my mind.
There are only three doors out of the banquet hall--the double doors at the entrance from which you came, and the two smaller doors beyond the head table in opposite corners of the room.
Which do you choose?

No time for sight-seeing. I'm just going back out the way I came in, which is through the double doors. I wouldn't have thought it would make that much difference, but I guess it does, doesn't it? I am copying the pertinent information from my first (previous) post, so you don't have to go looking for it.
As far as how I'm walking out of the room, just try to stay close to the wall and keep my eyes open and my mouth shut. When I get to the double doors, just try to crack them and slip out. Probably another stealth check huh?
I waited 5 minutes praying. What's going on in the room? Has anyone else noticed that the royal family is gone? Is the chaos subsiding at all? I imagine someone would make a speech or something because they think I'm responsible for that. On second thought, don't automatically drop the shotgun shells. I might, but if doing so would compromise my ability to leave, forget about it.
The double doors are open, and by now two thirds of the people have left.
As far as you know, that direction leads to the entry hall and the front doors of the castle. Whether there are other exits off the entry hall to other parts of the castle was not discussed.
That the royals have left given the fact that the crown prince has been killed by an invisible invader is hardly surprising. No one is wasting time wondering about it. Pedro has abandoned the body, although whether he has abandoned it having successfully removed the magical disguise or whether he gave up the effort you cannot know while wearing the cloak. He is scanning the room, and looking back and forth between the two doors behind the head table.
Dropping the shotgun shells is unlikely to be noticed. Guards have moved out into search parties, as far as you can tell.
I'm assuming you move to the entry hall and settle into a corner to reload, and that you pray there. There will be people here--twenty or thirty milling about, talking about what has happened, arguing about whether the royals are demons or the invaders are charlatans. You might be heard talking or loading a gun, although no one here is actually looking for you. Do you want to pray here, or go somewhere else?
I am not giving more information about the entry hall because I need to know whether you are going that way based on the information you have already, not based on what I add to your information.

I'm going to pray silently where I reloaded the MAK 90.

I'd try to find a spot that was as secluded as possible. I don't want someone to bump into me or anything. Behind a potted plant or something.
The base time factor for such a skill is one minute, and you are doing it for ten minutes, which could mean +32 to your chance of success. On the other hand, it has a 1 to 10 TF to duration ratio, which means the one minute casting time would produce a ten minute effect. You could have the 10 minute casting time produce a one hundred minute effect, which is probably ample time for you to locate your demons, but consumes your +32SM with a balancing -32SM.
So the question is, how long do you expect it to last?
Oh, and "Until I find them" is not an acceptable answer.
Is there anything else I should know about the skill that would impact your chance of success? Would you like a copy of the Magic Skills Worksheet to help you through it?

I'll take a 100 minute time on this.
(OOC) John the Player really would like to see those special trees. John the Character is engaging demons, so he will do whatever he has to do. Just giving my 2 cents if it matters.
You know immediately that you must return through the dining hall and take the left hand door behind the head table.
There are still people milling about in there, and Pedro was last seen in that room.

Do it.
