Anyone seen the movie Strange Days? I don't want to explain it at the moment, will later though, if asked. Anyway, are there any worlds based on that idea? I think that would make a really cool world.

Well, in the movie you can record thoughts. I could go to Kings Island, give you the disk, you play it, and you go to Kings Island, from your living room. It's very imaginative. (Horror, Sci-Fi fan) Anyway, I think it would make a really great world. Anything like that exist? There was a movie in the 80s, (Brainscan, maybe?) Christopher Walken was working on a similar project. A lady records her death, and assent to Heaven. That would be a cool world. I mean imagine having that when you needed to prove that you were a verser?

Mind/Machine Interface technology (M/MI) is covered in Tech 13@. Of course, just because you have it doesn't mean you can use it to prove who you are, for a number of reasons:

  • The development of the ability to record thoughts/memories/experiences and replay them into someone else's mind will be followed within a very short time--not more than a few years--by the ability to compose programs which produce artificial versions thereof. Thus for a short time there will be this aspect that the existence of the recording might demonstrate the reality of the experience, but very quickly that will cease to be significant--in much the same way that photoshop has made photographic evidence unreliable.
  • There is not much difference between the memories we have of real events and those we have of our most vivid imaginings. Some of us could produce mental images of the experience of being on Perelandra, or Volturnus, or Narnia, or Middle Earth, as easily as we could produce mental images of being in college or at work. That my mind can produce the image of the experience does not mean that I had the experience in reality--only that I can imagine having the experience.
But I agree that, like every other movie I've ever seen, there's potential for a great game world there.
