That was on a T shirt that I saw. I'm surprised I remembered that many, and I wouldn't be surprised if I got half of them wrong.

Ya know, say whatever you want about whether my sister was right to hit me for poking her, say whatever you want about who is "allowed" to hit whom. Fact remains, my sister has an infant son watching her every move, learning from her. She's supposed to be the mature, responsible adult, and mature, responsible adults don't hit people for poking them in the forehead. My sister was supposed to be the responsible person. If that's the example she's going to set for her son, then I pity the poor kid.

Now, I noticed that in the beginning of this century the right word for blacks in America was "Negro",
No, that was at the beginning of last century. Get your centuries right.
I laugh. You are absolutely right on the century thing, and it took me a moment to realize it. I'm just not staying up to speed, I guess.
Fact remains, my sister has an infant son watching her every move, learning from her.
And what is he learning? I suspect that what he is learning is that it's allowed for girls to hit boys but boys should not hit them back.
Now if she had an infant daughter, we might ask whether that's an appropriate lesson to teach the little girl--but then, it might well be what your sister believes, and if so she has the right to teach it to her daughter, even if you do not agree with her.

And what is he learning? I suspect that what he is learning is that it's allowed for girls to hit boys but boys should not hit them back.
But what he should be learning is that it's not OK for anyone to hit anyone else.
Oh yeah, and if you had grown up with my sister, you would probably believe, just like I do, that it's OK to hit a girl if she hits you first. If you had grown up with her, you'd believe it too, I'm certain.
Perhaps, but bear in mind that some of people's beliefs, their values, are conscious decisions rather than learned.Sometimes a person decides that what they were taught is wrong or misguided, for whatever reason.

Yeah, I know that. Believe it or not, I used to be extremely anti-gun. My mom raised me like that. Fortunately, my uncle set me straight on it.
Just an observation. You used and spelled "conscious" correctly. I always have trouble with that one. The homophone "conscience" doesn't help matters at all, and used to be almost as difficult to spell. Then I noticed "con-science." Made it so much easier.

Is it? You have a lot of religious groups in conflict. Christians, Hindus, Animists, Jews...and all with Islamic sorts.
Eric, who are you talking to?
(Doing Therapy)
He's talking about how I said your view on Islam is uneducated, I think. It's the earliest post that would make sense having that sort of response that I can see.
I disagree, Tadeusz. there may be a greater percentage of those that participate in those activities as opposed to other religions, but it is still a minority compared to the entirety of their religious followers. That's what I was saying.
Well, the thing is that when it happens, it's all over the news. Having had a bit of experience with how the news can distort the truth, I'm not surprised at people's attitudes towards it.

MJ, you said once "What kind of an idiot pokes at the driver of an open-topped jeep, driving over less than ideal roads, while he is secured in the back?" Something like that.
Suppose my little sister was my little brother. Everything else was the same. I have my same size and strength, and she, in the body of a man, has her same size and strength. If I got hit for poking her, and then knocked her down, you would say (to her) "What kind of an idiot hits someone twice their size?"
What does the gender have to do with it?
And I'm not literally twice her size, but you get what I'm saying. She's probably 5 foot 7 and about 175-200 pounds, so well within acceptable tolerances to be considered the size of a man.

There was a guy I went to school with. He had a pituitary disorder, and stopped growing when he was in the second grade. He looked (and acted) very much like an eight year old boy, although he was in fact 2 years older than me. (He didn't graduate until he was 20) Some friends and I had to get him out of trouble with other guys more than once. Everyone picks on the little guy, ya know? He would be no match for my sister in a fight. However, because he has a penis and my sister doesn't, it would be OK for her to hit him, but not OK for him to hit my sister? I don't bloody well think so.
All the gender has to do with it is that there is a tendency for those of a certain gender to have certain physical traits, and this tendency has colored society's views of these situations. This may or may not be a bad thing, depending on circumstance and personal view.
I still say if women want gender equality, then if they hit a man, they should expect to be treated like one.
Brock,
You're right, but jokes only need a core of truth, not the whole thing.
John,
Women don't want gender equality, or to be more precise, a very small minority do.

Something I saw (woman talking) "I used to want to be equal to a man, but I realized I was setting my sights too low."
MJ was talking about a husband and wife, the wife throws something, the husband hits her. Well, the logical course of action, if the wife doesn't want to get hit, would be for her to stop throwing things, at least I'd think. How many times do you have to kick the dog before it learns not to bite you? (Bad analogy, I know, but it's the only one I can come up with)
Concerning Islam, it should be said in its defense that the countries of the Islamic Empire had the closest thing in the world to freedom of religion until the Baptists managed to make it the law in Rhode Island. You could not be a participant in government or military if you were not Islamic, and non-Islamic proselytizing was forbidden, but Christians and Jews were permitted meeting places and freedom to worship in the cities and countries under Islamic domination in the middle ages.
On the other hand, its radical extremist wing is worse than the radical extremist wings of any other religion of any time of which I am aware. The famed Children's Crusade was a well-meant badly misguided notion that God would help the innocent. (It did not consider the possibility that participation in the crusade might make them guilty.) The promise of heaven automatically for death in a holy war is a powerful incentive for anyone to become a radical extremist. I'd be tempted by those promised virgins myself, if I hadn't seem that photo of them.

That's what many men would think--which is why so many of them wind up jailed and facing restraining orders.Well, the logical course of action, if the wife doesn't want to get hit, would be for her to stop throwing things, at least I'd think.

So suddenly women, by virtue of their gender, are no longer responsible for their own actions? I'll tell you this, next time my sister hits me for ANY reason, I'm going to press assault charges against her. She's just as responsible for her actions as I am.

Seventy-two women who will all get their period at the same time? Sounds more like a punishment if you ask me.
Indeed John,
I read a time travel romance one day and the guy is an Old West cowboy and the girl a modern. She proclaims the equality of women. He is puzzled, and disagrees. No its not that he thinks women are inferior to men. He thinks women are superior to men.
I'm tempted by this point of view, or have been.
That, and I don't know if they ever said what gender the virgins would be. Rather awkward moment.
I've been told that it could be translated to mean that the 72 women have to remain virgins for all eternity. Kind of a "Look but don't touch" kind of thing.

Ya know MJ, I was thinking about it. If the wife throws something, and the husband does not hit her back, he could press assault charges on her, could he not? Yeah, next time my sister hits me, I'm not gonna hit her, I'm gonna hit 911 on the nearest phone and press assault charges. She's just as responsible for her actions as I am responsible for mine.
That's what her son needs to be learning. You don't hit someone back, you call the cops and let them deal with it.

MJ, you said that my sister hitting me for poking her was assault and battery. Misdemeanor or Felony? Since she's my sister, wouldn't it be domestic violence, or is that only when it's against a spouse or other live in partner? I'm dead serious. She says I can't hit her back, I won't. I'll do the right thing. Press Charges.
(Doing Therapy)
Or...you could sit down, have a reasonable chat, and promise that neither one of you will do the actions you did again against each other.
Domestic violence is a category of assault and battery.
Assault is threatening harm against someone. Battery is touching someone without their consent (or in a manner to which they did not consent).
The definitions of felonies and misdemeanors are usually very localized, and I don't know what they might be in Ohio. Some factors that might be involved in classifying an attack as felony assault might include:
- connection of assault with another crime, such as attempted robbery or attempted rape;
- clear physical injury to the victim;
- use of or threatening with an obvious weapon, such as a knife, gun, or possibly a blunt intrument;
- duration of the event;
- relationship of the parties;
- amount of paperwork the cop feels like doing given how serious he thinks you are about pursuing the case and how likely he feels it is that the court will take it seriously;
- lack of provocation.

Brock, I would be doing it to make a point. Unless you are clearly defending yourself, you have no right to hit anyone, whether you are male or female or anything. You can't honestly tell me you felt my sister was defending herself from a poke in the forehead which only hurt for at most an instant. I, on the other hand, could make a case that I was defending myself. I would be pressing charges just to make a point, and since it is just to make a point, I wouldn't want to get her into any serious trouble. Hundred dollar fine would work, she can afford it. Hence asking if what she did would be a misdemeanor or felony. Just enough to let her know that she's not allowed to hit me any more than I'm allowed to hit her.
And of course, I've hit her before and she didn't press charges, but a 15 year old hitting someone is way different from a 31 year old doing it.
Not at all. But you had no need to poke her either. hence sitting down and talking it out being a solution. It obviously bothers you; perhaps talking about it would alleviate some tension.

I would if I honestly thought it would work.

Doesn't ANYBODY else see that as funny? Somebody says "point" so you poke them in the forehead? Doesn't ANYBODY else think that's funny? Hardly worth hitting someone over, in any event. I wish my family could see things as FUNNY!!!!! No one else can laugh, and I am the one with mental problems!!!!!

Well, you admitted that your pointing hurt. So you stepped over two barriers for a joke. 1)should not hurt. 2)especially should not hurt females.
As to why some people can't take a joke. Perhaps its a species of rigidity. And one is rigid from fear or anger, or from an over-inflated opinion of oneself. As in someone's muscles being locked up from being frozen in place or from controlling anger. And one might be rigid from being an overly inflated balloon that sees no need to bend for its wondrousness.
When I told my aunt about it, she said "Everyone knows something is going to happen when you're around. They're always tensed up waiting for it, and when it does, they explode." So, why not just accept the fact that something is going to happen and live with it? It makes the world so much easier.
I might see it as funny if I understood what the point was. Why say point and poke someone? Are you playing at fencing with your fingers, and successfully poking her was a point? Are you pointing at her too close to her skin? What was the point?
The joke was that she said, "Point", so he did. But he poked her when he pointed, which was probably necessary to underscore the fact that he was pointing.
John, maybe you should try to figure out how to change your image such that your family expects that if you're around something good is likely to happen.

Because, everyone always insists that I control my psychosis. If I were retarded, they wouldn't insist that I control my retarded-ness. I'm reminded of the movie Rain Man. The scene in the diner, when Raymond is asking where the maple syrup is. Tom Cruise says "Raymond, don't make a scene. Stop acting like a f-ing retard." Raymond can't help acting the way he does. It wasn't Raymond that needed to straighten up, it was Tom Cruise, and you see that, by the end of the movie, he has accepted Raymond. It only took him a week. My family has had 32 years. Why can't they accept me? I can't make the psychosis go away any more than Raymond could make the autism go away.

For those who haven't seen the movie, Dustin Hoffman plays an autistic savant, and Tom Cruise is his long-lost brother. In the scene, Raymond (Hoffman) is asking why the maple syrup isn't on the table before the pancakes. "The maple syrup has to be on the table before the pancakes, otherwise it will definitely be too late." In his mind, that was the way it HAD to be. Tom Cruise grabs Raymond by the back of the neck, jerks him over, and says the above line. This is equivalent to how my sister reacted.
How I would have reacted in Tom's case, is flag down the nearest waitress and ask her if she could go get me a bottle of maple syrup. If Raymond says it HAS to be there first, he's right. Such a small thing to do to completely diffuse the situation. And Raymond is the one with a mental illness, ya know?
