Concerning attribute checks, there are simple ones and difficult ones. Both can be bonused and both can be penalized.
A simple will power check means we roll 2d20, add the two together, and if the total is less than your attribute score (in this case not greater than 16 for your 1@7 will power) you succeed. The range is 2 to 40, with the average roll coming it at 21 or 22; your chance to fail is about 70%.
A difficult will power check means we roll d30+10, that is, add ten to the roll of a thirty-sided die, and again if the roll is less than your attribute score, you succeed. The average roll comes in around 26, and your chance to fail in this case is about 83.33%.
To bonus or penalize such a roll, we increase or decrease your "effective" attribute for the purpose of the roll. That is, we might say that in this particular circumstance it is as if your will power were three intensities greater, and thus 1@10. This would decrease your chance of failure to 61.75% on the simple check and 73.33% on the difficult one. Such an increase can be given either because there is some basis for saying that your attribute is greater at the moment (e.g., strength during an adrenaline rush) or because there is reason to think that the task is not as difficult as an ordinary task for which such a check would be rolled (e.g., strength check to lift something significantly lighter than the maximum for which such a check would be required).
I'm not entirely comfortable with the notion that I am going to roll a will power check to determine what your character is going to do. If you wish to use dice to make those decisions, you should roll your own dice. It occurs to me, though, that you probably cannot easily get dice (I must remember to send John dice for some occasion). If you have a stopwatch that counts in hundredths of a second, you can use the hundredths, for a d20 by dividing by five and rounding up, for a d30 by segmenting it 1-30, 31-60, 61-90, and ignoring rolls above 90.
Also, it does not say that she knocked you down. She hit you four times, and three of them were hard enough to injure you, but it is clear that she is pulling her punches, and simply caught you off guard.
--M. J. Young
Well see MJ, that's the thing. I'm not 100% certain I would or wouldn't do it. As a player, I could see it going both ways. Good both ways, bad both ways. It doesn't matter, forget I ever asked. And ya know what? I was going to get you a stopwatch for Christmas, but I ran out of money, don't you hate that?
"Lauren, that was a little more intense than I had in mind. If that's what you call sparring, then you can leave me out of it. I've been in fights where I wasn't hit that hard. Do you REALLY think it's wise to beat up on a guy that might be watching your back one of these days?"
I think part of my problem is that I play my character TOO accurately. Now I know I'm pissed off
I'm going back to my room, forget this. Upon arrival, sit down, clear my mind, and try again to locate my gear.
(Doing Therapy)
"I am sorry, John. That's the way my teacher sparred. I really was pulling my punches--but I guess I thought you were better than you were."
In a previous post (before we actually ran the sparring) you wrote that you were going to say:
"Good match Lauren. How long has it been since you were in a relationship kind of relationship? The Architect told me that versers would spread the scriff to non-infected people, but I guess that's a problem you and I wouldn't have. Hey, I said I wasn't interested in sex, but I enjoy the company of a beautiful woman as much as anyone else. Would you like to have this on a more personal level? I guess I'm trying to ask you out on a date."
I had prepared her answer but not delivered it, in case you never actually asked, but I thought I'd bring that back to the front to see whether you still wanted to say that and get her answer.
You can get focused on your clairvoyance when you get to your room; it might be hunger distracting you.

You can get focused on your clairvoyance when you get to your room; it might be hunger distracting you.
I think you mean I can'T. Typos are bad.
'
I left Lauren for the moment. Go get something to eat, and try to find my gear again.
I think we are about to begin day 8
Succeed, fail or botch, get some sleep, go to work, then after work call up Lauren for a rematch. Are there any kind of bonuses for being extremely determined to defeat your opponent? If there are, then I should get some serious bonuses here.
"Lauren, this time, I'll tell you when to start, since it seems you're much better than I am. Sucker punch me like that again...... Anyway, let's get started."
This time, no one moves until I am ready to move. So, if the dice say I'm not in my form, reroll them. Keep rolling them until I am in my form, then we can dance.
I would think if this is successful it would be a new use on boxing.

MJ, did you ever see Face/Off? Nicholas Cage has a pair of automatic pistols in a holster that he wears on his back. He can reach behind his back, and come up with 2 guns, one in each hand. I would have asked about a holster like that at the gun store. We've already established that they sell Ruger P-89 pistols. I'd like to see about getting a second gun, and a holster like what I described. What does the GE roll say?
"I would have" is not a valid statement of present action. You can plan to go to the store and ask, and you can do it whenever you think you have time, but you can't change what you've done unless I think it makes sense. You asked about a lot of things; you didn't think to ask about the holster.
And before you complain, I know I've kicked myself a number of times for not remembering something I wanted when I was in the store. I'm sure you have, too.
You spend about ten minutes searching the blackness of space before the shadow that catches your eye is not a meteor or piece of debris. Zooming in on it you find your missing gear. It is drifting slowly--or maybe it is stationary and you are moving.
There are several pieces, and you can only pulse two per minute (assuming success). Nothing is there but what you identified as yours in the previous post. In what order do you want to attempt to pulse them back toward you while your Clairvoyance is still working? Do you want to attempt to push anything toward you, assuming you do not complete the task, without being able to see them, or attempt to regain the clairvoyance, or leave them for another time?
The next day Lauren projects the Blank Mind skill pattern to you, and you manage to learn it. It is a technique of clearing the upper more conscious portion of your mind and doing your thinking non-verbally somewhere beneath that, creating something of an empty space where mind reading and other telepathic attacks would target.
--M. J. Young
And before you complain, I know I've kicked myself a number of times for not remembering something I wanted when I was in the store. I'm sure you have, too.
Nah, not complaining. I just figure that there was a lot of "down time" where I'm essentially doing nothing. I figured we could just put these actions into that "down time" and pretend like I did the action. Perhaps I was walking past the gun store on my lunch break and stopped in to ask or something.
Well, OK then, go into the gun store and ask them about the holster. If they have it, order one. If not, purchase a second Ruger P-89 regardless. We've already established that they sell those. On our world, it would come with two 15 round magazines and a hard plastic storage box.
If they don't have the holster, check the computer for a leather worker. Perhaps they can custom build one. Admittedly, it would be a very good GE roll indeed, even on our world if the gun store had such a holster. Something like that would probably be a custom-made job. No harm in asking though, right?
So, on day 10, I will be carrying three guns. One on my hip, one in the shoulder holster, and the 357 behind my back.
On bringing the gear back, it's just my unfinished Leatherman tool and my shoes, correct? In that case, I'm just going to disown it. I just wanted to know what all was there. I just know the scriff sense was driving him nuts. If I disown it, the scriff sense goes away, right? I just hope no one crashes their spaceship into it....
"Hey, thanks for the psionics lesson Lauren, now, let's get down to the gym and try that again. This time, you don't move until I tell you I'm ready. Sucker punch me like that again...."
As of right now, consider the Blank Minds to always be on, in practice mode.

That 357 holster I'm going to get would be a right-handed behind that back holster, and also as a left-handed hip holster. I think I told you that, but I'm not certain.
(Doing Therapy)
The gun store has never heard of such a hoster. You also don't find "leatherworker" in the mall directory--although seriously, where would he get leather on a space ship?
Note concerning Blank Mind: it is reasonable to say what you have said. If some psionic ability is used against you, you should repeat that you've stated it is always on, and then we roll it to see whether it worked. "Doesn't work" could mean that you lost focus and it was not on, or it could mean that the opponent overcame it somehow. Of course, the opponent might overcome it even if it does "work".
Lauren easily falls into stance; it unnerves you and disrupts your focus, but you regain your composure and drop into stance as well. This time, you swing first--she easily dodges, but you block two incoming strikes before she manages to land the third, a minor touch that does not even hurt, and you dodge the followup.
"You're doing much better today," she comments as she comes in again and breezes within inches of your face, then smacks your leg hard enough to sting just a bit, but not injure it. You land a second hit on her, and she misses and then throws herself off balance leaving her side wide open for a moment.
--M. J. Young

Point!!!
Well, I work for a scrap dealer, can I get some thick nylon padding from which to make my own with my 1@3 sewing skill? It would probably be a new use.
You land a second hit on her, and she misses and then throws herself off balance leaving her side wide open for a moment.
Of course I'm going to tag Lauren. Probably a mid underarm rib shot.
There are certainly materials available which would be good for making such a holster. Describe in detail your design, including what holds it in place and how the pistols are positioned and secured.
You go for the strike, but she cartwheels away from your hand, coming up to hit you with both feet, which sting a bit but do not injure, and another strike with the hand as she regains her upright position. Then she leaps into the air, doing a flip over your head and landing behind you to touch you again from behind. You manage to spin around and catch her with another hit, she smiles and nods her approval. Then she gets hold of your arm as you jab at her, and shifts your momentum to send you stumbling across the floor, and you fall and hit the mat. In seconds her feet land hard on the mat on either side of you--it would have hurt quite a bit had she landed on you. Then she steps aside to let you rise.
"I guess I ought to have mentioned," she says, "that I started training in this something over a century ago. I've killed a couple vampires in hand-to-hand, although I usually have to use psionics, magic, and a few weapons against them."
--M. J. Young
"I guess I ought to have mentioned," she says, "that I started training in this something over a century ago.
Without even trying to get up, look her in the eye and say "I guess I should have mentioned that my last sparring partner was an 11 year old boy. He was strong as a bull and really fast, but still no match for me. All things considered, I think I did OK that time."
Hold out my hand like I'm shaking her's and let her help me up.
"I'm just glad this time you are pulling your punches. I could imagine that would have hurt quite a bit. How did I do?"
Why isn't this a New Use on boxing? This is the first hand to hand fight I've been in, really. And for that matter, why wasn't it a New Use when I got into the knife fight at Pearl Harbor? I landed a couple of good punches.
Let me think on how to make that holster.
"Lauren, you did that Great Leap pretty good. The Architect showed me how to do that. I did it a couple of times, but I think I've lost the skill. I was planning to Great Leap over the wall where I was being contained in Pearl Harbor. (I was, once I got to 1@10 boxing, I was going to try to escape) At least I went down swinging. Can you give me a refresher course in that? I bet I could turn that into a leaping punch. I'm thinking like a leaping uppercut, or perhaps a running jumping punch from across the room."
I don't why that wouldn't work. It would be, essentially, leaping while holding your fist out in front of you.
(Doing Therapy)
"John, I was pulling my punches last time. You were defending better this time. I always told my sons that if they played rough one of them would get hurt, even if they didn't mean it. It goes for us, too."
"Great leap? Oh, the flip? I don't know--I practiced for months to be able to do a flip over a six foot high bar, back on NagaWorld. Of course, I've had a lot of practice since, but I always found that it was useful in fighting. But the only way to get better is to practice. Also, it took me some time to combine the acrobatics moves with the martial arts, even though my sensei was rather keen on doing that. He focused more on the weapon skills, and on form and balance; but then, I'd gone to him because I was told he knew how to teach a kau sin ke--that's how I say it, his pronunciation, well, first time I heard him say it I wasn't sure what he meant, and I don't know that I could reproduce it all that well. But it doesn't matter.
"Show me how you do it; I'll see if I can suggest anything."
The kind of combination jump and strike is listed as "aggressive tumbling", and yes, it can be done. Lauren does it, but generally strikes with her feet when she does.
Also, I seem to recall that I said it would be a new use if you managed to hold your own against Lauren, and I'd say that qualifies. I was not refereeing when you fought in Pearl Harbor, and do not know why the referee did not think it a new use, but then, it wasn't up to me and I didn't see any question at the time.
--M. J. Young
"Show me how you do it; I'll see if I can suggest anything."
Well, for me the Great Leap would probably have to be done standing. Give it a shot. Straight up and straight back down, nothing fancy.
Oh yeah MJ, just an aside, I was doing psychosis therapy all weekend, and didn't post at all Saturday or Sunday. Usually I go on those rants. Therapy must be working.
Did I ever get that second Ruger P-89? On our world, it would have two 15 round magazines and a plastic box.
Since I can't get the double barrel shotgun I think I would try to get a Mossberg Persuader. This is an eight round 12 gauge pump shotgun. Do they have any with folding or collapsible stocks? Those can be fired with the stock folded, and would have a pistol grip for such occasions. I might have to describe it to you in better detail. Folded up, it would have an overall length of about 30-36 inches, and it would go into the Verser's Survival Pack with a quantity of ammo to be discussed later.
Also, Oak mentioned this in our first world. A canteen that can draw water straight out of the air? I imagine the gun store would be a good place to look for that. If there is anything that resembles hunting in this universe, a canteen would be something they would likely sell.
(Doing Therapy)
Your jump is done cleanly. Lauren says it looks like the form is good, you just need to keep practicing.
Regarding the Ruger, what did I say about it previously, and when/where? Also, have we already discussed the Mossberg Persuader in this world, or am I recalling it from a previous world?
I got confused on this: is the verser survival pack the backpack you bought? (I had envisioned something more on the order of a belt pouch or fanny pack, and couldn't see how a shotgun would fit even folded, but if it's the backpack that's not a problem.)
Your sporting goods dealer does carry a variety of supplies for wilderness work, but he's never heard of a canteen that draws moisture from the air. He thinks that would be difficult, given the variety of atmospheres and conditions on habitable planets.

"Well Lauren, you can help me do that. A coach couldn't hurt."

You said they existed. That's about it. I'm not keeping track of my currency anymore, but I'm certain I would have it.
Also, have we already discussed the Mossberg Persuader in this world, or am I recalling it from a previous world?
Remembering it from my first world. I don't think there was any discussion of it here, except that they do sell these kinds of guns.

It's actually both. The belt bag has mostly gold, silver, and other valuables in it. The backpack is what is storing the weapons.

Would it be a new use if I boxed Lauren whilst wearing my backpack? Since I wear that thing quite a bit, I would think it would be wise to get good at fighting whilst wearing it. If I do fight Lauren, it's fists only, and I would hope that she would be similarly encumbered.
"Lauren, I don't imagine most people you fight are going to be 4th degree black belts. Probably most people would be (1@5 drunken, parking lot brawling) I think fighting fists only would be good enough for most encounters."
Speaking of fighting drunk, would it be a new use if I fought her whilst I was intoxicated? There is a fighting style called Drunken Boxing. How similar it is to the boxing I'm doing I do not know, but I do know that the practitioners train whilst intoxicated, as it does make you more able to withstand pain.
(Doing Therapy)
Lauren does not use "fists" to fight. She uses open hands, feet, poking fingers and toes, throws and pushes, and her chain-like kau sin ke (which she is not using to fight you). She does own a backpack, and has often fought while wearing it.
Since I suspect you have never boxed while so encumbered, I would allow fighting while wearing it as a new use.
I believe this is day 8; you have a martial arts lesson today. It's also one of your days off from work.
Your gun dealer has a P99 with two clips as described, and a Mossberg 8-gauge Persuader. You can afford them. What do you want to get, total?
Lauren says she will coach you in your jump, if you like, three days a week; but your schedule is getting rather full, and you're tying up hers quite a bit as well. She has to train Derek, too, you know, and she's also supposed to be working on a job while she's here.

Well, by "fists" I mean punches and the equivalent. Open handed punches would be OK. Just none of that fancy kicking, jumping and flipping. A straight up fist fight, both of us encumbered by backpacks.
Since I suspect you have never boxed while so encumbered, I would allow fighting while wearing it as a new use.
COOL!!! Let's do it. Did you get what I said about boxing whilst drunk? I edited whilst you were replying to "Sorry Guys" and you didn't say anything. Go up a post or two.
I believe this is day 8; you have a martial arts lesson today. It's also one of your days off from work.
Are there any punches I am learning/will learn in OkyDoky Smokey which I could incorporate into my boxing? Speaking of which, does Lauren know Solid Punch? Is that part of ODS? I'd love to get better at that.
Your gun dealer has a P99 with two clips as described, and a Mossberg 8-gauge Persuader. You can afford them. What do you want to get, total?
You do mean P 89, right? (You said something about a lot of players using a Walther P99, and that it confused you.) All of the Ruger P series 9mm pistols took the same magazine, so as long as it's a 9mm and takes the same magazine, that's fine by me. I've got more than enough magazines and ammo, no need to do that.
Yes, but do they have it in a 12 gauge? (MJ, you have no idea....) A 12 gauge pistol grip is hard enough to control, I wouldn't want to imagine an 8 gauge. (You do know that would be over an inch in diameter, right?) If they have a 12 gauge version, I'll take it.
(Now you know why I typed it.) Go down to that post labeled "Shotgun Rounds" and tell me what all of what kind of ammo they have. The bird shot, buckshot and slugs would probably be a given, what about the more exotic versions? Shotgun rounds (on our world) usually sell in boxes of 25, if it makes any difference.
Lauren says she will coach you in your jump, if you like, three days a week; but your schedule is getting rather full, and you're tying up hers quite a bit as well. She has to train Derek, too, you know, and she's also supposed to be working on a job while she's here.
"Well, why don't we bring Derek in on this? I'll show him and you some boxing, you teach us what you know, let us spar, etc. I'd love to go a round or two with Derek. Let's get him in on this."
Curious, I realize Lauren can't coach me in "boxing" because she doesn't know it, but she COULD coach me in "Throwing Punches" Would that be any kind of instructor bonus?
(Doing Therapy)
Lauren does not fight using "just her hands". Her hands are the least important weapon in her style. The fight you envision is not going to happen. She compares it to you boxing with both hands tied behind your back. Yes, she uses her hands, about as much as you use your feet to box--which you do, but only defensively.
I did not see the edit, and I'm not looking back. Don't edit posts after you've posted them, except for misspellings and coding errors and such.
Although Okydoky Smoky uses hands and feet, it does not use what you would call punches. It's more about hitting vital areas to cause pain and disabling. Its maneuvers are:
- Focused Push B7@3 which uses force and balance and momentum to drive the opponent backwards.
- Spinning Kick B7@3 which is an increased damage maneuver.
- Leaping Kick B7@3 which requires a short run and is an increased damage maneuver.
- Crushing Grasp B7@3 which uses speed and leverage to crush an object inside the grip.
- Seize Weapon B7@5 which is an armed disarming maneuver.
- Pain Inflicter B7@7 which is a nerve attack causing crippling pain without doing injury.
- Stunning Strike B7@7 which is another nerve attack which dazes the opponent.
- Paralyzing Strike B7@7 which is another nerve attack which immobilizes the target.
- Untouching Push B7@8 which drives the opponent back like the Focused Push, but without actually touching him.
- Remote Strike B7@9 which injures the opponent as if he were hit, but without touching him.
Lauren does not know anything about throwing punches.
Yes, they have the 12 gauge. And yes, I meant the same gun you requested. Sorry about that. What ammo would you like to buy? 25 per box is fine.
Lauren smiles when you mention bringing in Derek, as if it were some inside joke. "Derek fights with his butcher knife, his chain, and his frying pan, and he's pretty formidable with them. But he's always going to be small, and I don't think he's interested in learning to box. I tried to show him a few tricks, but he's much better with that laser rifle of his than he will ever be with his fists."

"Well, your fists are the one weapon you can never have taken away from you. Let's have a rematch. Both wearing backpacks. Once again, you don't move until I say so. Yeah, I'll never get someone a in real fight to stand still, but this isn't a real fight. You want to go again?"
(I just want the New Use)
What I said about fighting drunk was that there is a martial arts style, Jackie Chan is a known practitioner, Drunken Boxing. I don't think it has anything to do with the boxing that I'm doing, but being drunk DOES help your pain tolerance. I think that's why they do it. Get three sheets to the wind, THEN fight Lauren. I'm hoping that's another New Use.

Well, if it's all about hitting vital areas, I can hit vital areas with boxing can't I? If it's all just knowing where to hit someone, then why not? If I used that successfully, wouldn't that ALSO be a new use on boxing? That should be 4, bringing me to 2@1.
Buy the Ruger P-89 and the Mossberg 12 gauge.

I would REALLY like some Dragon's Breath rounds and some Shredder explosive rounds. They sell grenades, why not exploding shotgun shells too?

Ya know, I can't believe I'm arguing with you about this, but it's been driving me nuts for a long time. I find it very difficult to believe that I went through that jeep crash with over 40 broken bones and now have no residual effects from it. Not even little aches and pains from it. I broke both arms, how can I box with any proficiency? Or is it that little things like that are healed when you verse out?
As a matter of fact, how does that healing upon versing work? I've versed twice since then, would all of the residual effects be gone? Would a doctor even be able to tell that I had been that banged up? Like I said, I can't believe I'm arguing with you about it, but I'm genuinely curious how I couldn't have any lasting effects from that crash.
"They're not going to take away my feet, either, and actually they're more likely to control my hands than my shoulders, aren't they?"
"We'll try that tomorrow. My backpack is in my room, after all, and by the time I got there and back, I'd have to get showered for work."
I am informed by practitioners of the martial arts that the point of drunken boxing is that the practitioner becomes more limber, more flexible. If I understand correctly, the intoxication is used at first to teach the seemingly unstable movements, and then the practitioner learns to duplicate the moves while sober. Jackie Chan has used the style in several movies, but I believe he was sober when those scenes were filmed.
If you get drunk and attempt to box, I will assess penalties against all your rolls, including your stance. If you get drunk and attempt to box Lauren, she will refuse to fight you when you are intoxicated, because there is too great a risk that you will be seriously injured. If you get drunk, pick a fight with someone, and succeed in activating your stance and landing a punch, I will give you new use for the skill--and trouble with security.
They have shredders. These are about five times the price of standard shotgun rounds, twenty-five to a box. They don't know anything about Dragon's Breath rounds.
I believe that nearly all of your advancement in boxing has been achieved since that accident; therefore you've managed to overcome any residual injury at least as far as boxing is concerned.
The automatic "healing" is not really healing the way you are thinking of it. It is a reset button to your "last stable form"--that is, to your condition before any injuries that have not yet healed in the sense of restoring all damage value. Thus for example you could lose your hand, and if you versed out immediately you would be restored with your hand; or you could lose your hand, spend a month being treated by medical professionals, have the stub of the arm heal so that you are back in perfect health without the hand, and then if you versed out you would not have the hand, because your last stable form had you without the hand.
So you're not getting better by versing; you're only being restored to the condition you were in just before the attack(s) that killed you.
As far as not having lasting effects from the crash, the real reason is because you've changed referees twice since then. I don't know whether Adam conveyed to Kyler what he thought would be the after-effects of such injuries, but I don't recall Kyler conveying such information to me, so I'm going by what I have on your sheet.
Cheer up--maybe I'll zygote you, and that will give you a whole new body. Of course, you might be a lion....

"They're not going to take away my feet, either, and actually they're more likely to control my hands than my shoulders, aren't they?"
"Well, after what happened with that MP, anybody that tries to control MY hands better be able to catch bullets like a magician." (I know how they do that trick, BTW. The gun is designed to bleed the power away from the bullet, so by the time the bullet hits the target, it might as well be a really loud pellet gun.)
"We'll try that tomorrow. My backpack is in my room, after all, and by the time I got there and back, I'd have to get showered for work."
"Looking forward to it."
They have shredders. These are about five times the price of standard shotgun rounds, twenty-five to a box. They don't know anything about Dragon's Breath rounds.
What about all of the other rounds I mentioned?
So a Mossberg Persuader 12 gauge, collapsible stock, 8 round capacity. That's 8 rounds plus one in the chamber, so a total of 9. I don't keep my guns with a round in the chamber though. To easy to shoot yourself in the foot that way. I still have that shoulder sling which holds 15 rounds. It was designed for a Mossberg shotgun, so I'm going to put it on the gun.
2 boxes bird shot
2 boxes 00 buckshot
2 boxes shredders
Yeah, The Last Boy Scout is where I heard about Shredder rounds also. They actually do exist. Destroys everything within a 10 foot radius. What kind of damage category would you put those in?
The shotgun sling (holds 15 shells) will have 5 bird shot, 5 00 buckshot and 5 shredders on it. The gun itself will be loaded with eight rounds 00 buckshot.
MJ, there's a trick you can do after you fire a round. You can load a shell into the gun and it will be the next shell to fire. So, if I get into a gunfight, fire off a round off 00 buckshot, and the guy is still standing, I can load a shredder into the gun, and it will be the next round fired.
So, I got the second Ruger 9mm and the 12 gauge, right?
Regarding residual effects, I did have arthritis, but I got rid of that. It's just that I broke my leg (hence having a steel plate in my leg) and that acts up on occasion. Forget about it. If I'm fine, then I'm fine.
Yes on the guns. The ammo is fine.
I have specifically avoided answering whether they have each of the types of ammo listed in the other thread probably for the same reason you have avoided asking specifically about each one: I don't have time to type all of that if you don't. Besides, I don't see how the conversation works. Do you walk into the gun store and say, "I want to know whether you have all of the various types of ammo that I wrote about in a computer file on a computer in another universe?" Do you say, "List and describe for me every kind of ammo you have available or can obtain for a shotgun?" To that he will say, "What do you want to find?" He's not going to list that. He'll show you what he has on the shelves and he'll check his catalogues for any one thing you specifically name, but he's not going to be an encyclopedia of such information. If you want to have this conversation with him, you have to make it a conversation--take the time to ask about each thing you're seeking and to get his answers individually.
Concerning the shredders, I'm inclined to think that they are dangerous blast with a damaging fragments rider within 10 yards, which makes damaging blast with annoying fragments in the next ten, and annoying blast in the next ten. Note that, because I didn't.

Well, today is my OkyDoky Smokey lesson. Go to that. Bid Lauren farewell. When is my next increase there?
Understood about the ammo. It's like you said though, they would have ammo on shelves. I could look and see what kinds they had. No matter. My opponent will be just as dead if I shoot them with 00 buckshot as they would be if I shot them with a bolo round.
Oh yeah MJ, just an aside. You said you were play testing this world with me. I would assume that means you're wanting feedback from me on it. Well, I'm sad to say that had Lauren not come into the scenario, I have a feeling this would have gotten boring rather quickly. What's the objective? On the other hand, if Lauren had not come into the scenario, we would have started skipping along rather quickly, and I would have beau coup skills with OkyDoky Smokey. I'd probably be a 3@2 in that by now....
Soon it will be day 9.
Your next advance is on day 25.
Your class goes reasonably well, as you focus on forms and movement.
It is Day 9, and I believe you have to work in the morning, and then meet Lauren and Derek to trade lessons.

Your next advance is on day 25.
And the manure hits the box of whirling blades on day 23... So, no advancement. I'm assuming whatever it is is either going to kill me or prevent me from taking any more lessons. And it will CERTAINLY kill me if TerraNova security tries to do anything.... Only question is, how many of them am I going to take with me?
Day 9, after work.
"Derek, I versed out in a knife fight in one world. I'm wondering how good you are with that butcher knife of yours. I'm sure I could blunt it so you couldn't do me any damage, then resharpen it afterwards. I'd like to see if I can get any idea of how better to defend against knife attacks. What do you think?"
Since the focus for me here would be teaching myself how to defend against that kind of an attack, I would think it would be a new use, since the first time I was just fighting for my life.
Probably putting duct tape (which I have) on the blade would be what I would do so he couldn't hurt me. It would be just touching with the blade would count as an attack, I suppose.
Also, I still want that rematch with Lauren whilst wearing backpacks. Wearing backpacks is a new use.
And since I am obviously the least skilled of the three, no one moves until I say so.

MJ, do you know what a spinning backhand punch is? It's just what it sounds like. You spin around and backhand your opponent. It's not a move in boxing, but I think I would like to try to teach myself that move. Is that a new use, or is it a completely new skill? It's good for attacking people behind you and also in front of you. When you do the spin, you generate a great deal of power, same concept with a spin kick. I'd like to try it.
EDIT, (Doing Therapy for Edit)
What about fighting blind and panoramic awareness? Do they come into play in the fights with Lauren? I'd like to try to fight her blind (New Use on something) but she would have to be seriously pulling punches. (No more than 2 attacks per turn, to put it in game lingo) I'd like to try that too. Does panoramic awareness still work when you're blind?

Dude!!! An angel of God appeared to you and directed what you did in the last world. An ANGEL OF GOD!!!!!! Dude!! And you still think you're just bouncing at random???!!!?!?! The Angel said that I was the ONLY PERSON IN THE WORLD who could take out those demons!!!!!! And you still think you're bouncing aimlessly?
I've seen visions, I've never seen an angel.
Terry, the Guardian Angel got me out of a jam here. God really likes you!!! What are you doing for Him? Is there an @1 Ask God for direction prayer I wonder.....

For what it's worth, your colorfully described disaster does not come before day 25.
Whether defending against a knife is a new use depends on how you're defending. It's probably a new skill, depending on what you hope to do, unless it's just a matter of defending against a weapon--in which case, you've already done it.
Lauren will fight you wearing backpacks, provided you don't limit her options. One thing she has to work on is not hesitating to think about what to do, and if you limit her options you are working against that.
The spiral backhand punch sounds like a leveraged attack to me--a new skill.
Fighting blind and panoramic awareness are both operational when you box. Yes, panoramic awareness works when you're fighting blind, although it is penalized. (Fighting blind is rolled to reduce the penalty for darkness or other obscured vision; panoramic awareness is rolled to negate surprise from attacks from unseen positions and enable targeting of opponents outside your field of vision.)

Wearing backpacks I didn't want her to limit, fighting her blind I did. Unless she's blind when we fight as well. If she can see and I can't, then she MUST limit her attacks to 2 per turn, or otherwise hinder herself. If I'm at that big of a disadvantage already, then she's got to give me SOMETHING.
"OK Lauren, let's go with backpacks on. You're not allowed to move until I say so."
Let's Do It.
After that, blindfold myself and fight Lauren again. I would be fighting in my boxing style, so that HAS to be a new use on boxing, or on fighting blind, as I've never done it before. Lauren HAS to limit herself to 2 attacks, or blindfold herself. I don't stand a chance against her when I CAN see. She HAS to give me SOMETHING to balance it out.
Use panoramic awareness whilst fighting blind, which is also a new use, as I've never used it blind before.
I think, for the moment, I'm not going to try spinning backhand punches in a fight. I'll teach myself that on the punching bag. Use it when I gain a modicum of proficiency. Try to teach myself that after I fight Lauren.
And of course, once again, Lauren is not allowed to attack until I give her the go-ahead. On ANY of the fights.

Have I seen any variations on bullets for the MAK 90? Armor piercing, hollow points, or tracer rounds? In our world, these would be fairly common.
I told you that a bullet won't normally explode a gas tank. This is true, but a tracer bullet will. It has a piece of red or white phosphorus in the tip, and it is illuminated at night, to aid in aiming. (Problem is, they work both ways, you see where it's going, they see where it's coming from.) Those WILL explode a gas tank. I'd like to get some specialty bullets for both the 9mm and the MAK90.
On our world, AP or tracer rounds for the 9mm would be rare at best. This isn't our world, so that means very little, but I just thought I would share it.

MJ, just an aside, I would have the shotgun inside the Verser's Survival Pack so that it could be grabbed without taking the backpack off. Maybe a rope tied to it so that I could pull it out quickly. It doesn't have a round in the chamber, so it would be a 30 if it went off in the performance of this action.
I would practice this in my hotel room, with the gun completely unloaded.
Also, it has the sling which holds 15 shotgun shells on it. Five bird shot, five 00 buckshot, 5 shredders. The gun itself is loaded with eight rounds 00 buckshot.
MJ, I just realized, the shotgun might not hold 8 rounds. Shotgun shells aren't standard in length. Most are 2 3/4 inches long. Some are 3 inches long, and others, 3 1/2 inches long. Needless to say, the length of the shell affects how many it can hold. (It's eight 2 3/4 and seven 3 inch magnum, for instance.) I've even seen shotgun shells that were really short. (This gun would probably hold 15 or 20 of them)
Longer shells are more powerful, but my hope would be that it holds at least 8. Of course, if it holds more than that, I won't turn my nose up at it. (I would imagine shotgun shells here would be smaller and more powerful than anything I've ever seen)
(And in that case, I might want to get some more of them.....)
Of course MJ, if you just want to say that they're 2 3/4 and make it easy, that's fine too. Just as long as I have 8 rounds. (I was kind of wondering if I should point this out at all, actually) I mean if I fire 8 rounds of 00 buckshot, and they're still a threat, I'm probably screwed anyway....

I'll go with 2.75" shells standard, 8 in the gun.
Lauren doesn't understand what it is you're trying to suggest when you want to fight her while blindfolded. She suggests perhaps instead the two of you should fight in a dark room, if you can find such a place that would be reasonably safe for such a fight.
You get into stance and call for go, but she dodges your opening jab, and although you block the next quite well, she lands three in a row, and nearly beans you with a fourth that you counter only to get hit in the ribs with another shot. You come in with another attack, which she parries, taps you with her left foot, and then trying to come around with a followup she twists to get past your block and lands on the floor. She goes into a roll and is back on her feet with no time lost, ready to counter your next punch. You manage to land a very light touch, and block her next, but she lands another, misses by inches on the next, and then takes a swing that comes nowhere near you.
You've been going for three minutes.

"Lauren, if you can see and I can't, and you're already 4 times better than I am, you'd really have to take it easy on me. Move around a lot, but don't strike so often. (In other words, using attacks to jump around and whatnot) Or would you want to fight with both of us in the dark? In that case, we can clear out the spare bedroom in my apartment. We can get it pretty dark in there. Just so you know, I have excellent night vision. Hey, I might have the advantage there...."
We're fighting with backpacks, I seem to be holding my own, this is a new use right?
"Is that all you got, Lauren? Come on baby, give it to me."
Attempt to teach myself a spinning backhand punch, it would work if she was in any direction of me (Hence, spinning) A botch would be that I land it and hurt her, I suppose.
If it means anything, I've visualized throwing this kind of punch thousands of times. You take kind of a twisted, sideways step with your swinging foot (in this case, right) lift your other foot, and spin around. You kind of step into it.
Is Lauren right or left handed? It doesn't matter to the fight, I don't think, but I'm right handed. I'm just trying to get a better mental picture of how this fight is going, that's all.

From Behind the Screens
That's three minutes of fighting. Lauren as a 2@4 stamina; John's is 1@8. He will tire first, but I think I should allow him six minutes before he starts to wear.
Unless one of us goes off of our feet, or is otherwise unable to continue, you're going to have to roll that. I would be very determined, so I would hope that counts as some manner of bonus. Keep it going until one of us is unable to continue, or I fail my check. Whichever comes first. I'm not giving this one up.

Three posts, more than 6 hours later.
I was just thinking that if I, as referee, had a player who insisted on checking for the smaller shells, nothing better than a 25 remarkably bad, but not totally surprising, would mean that it held less than 8. A neutral roll would mean it held ten 2 inch shells, and a 3 would be that the shells were a quarter of an inch thick, for a total of 80 shots, and the shells expanded through some high-tech means when they went in the chamber. I think that sounds like a reasonable GE chart, what do you think?
(Doing Therapy)
She moves in, and you dodge the first swing easily, but the next connects; you swing at nothing as she moves around you, scoring three more taps easily, then a miss before you catch nothing but air once more, and she comes back to touch you twice more. She misses twice, and you miss, and she misses badly enough to throw herself off balance and lose a chance, but at this point you are so tired from weaving and dodging that you can't come in with another swing.
"You all right?" she asks, not showing the fatigue you're feeling.
--M. J. Young
Lauren, right or left handed?
Must have failed the check pretty badly. I can't imagine only have 6 minutes of fight, I'd be way more determined than that.
"You all right?" she asks, not showing the fatigue you're feeling.
"Let's just say I'm glad this wasn't a real fight. I can honestly say that's the first time a woman ever wore me out..... So what are you doing now? I can't exactly let you beat me up twice without you buying me dinner. That just wouldn't be right. What do you say? Hey, if it works out, I get a girlfriend and a bodyguard." (The last said with an obvious note of sarcasm.)
And yes, this is me asking her out on a date.
"After that, I think we should both be rested enough for another round, if you're up for it. I'd like to try that fighting blind, like I said. I can get it almost pitch black in my hotel suite. You want to try that again? The thing is, I must ask that you not strike as often, and more around more. (Using her attacks to move around, instead of actually attack) I'm sure you're better than me at fighting blind also. However, I do have excellent night vision. None of my friends liked coming to my apartment, because it was always so dark. I could see fine. What do you say?"
And yes, that is true. I've always had a bit of an affinity for darkness. When I was a kid, I used to sit in the closet for hours, just because it was dark in there.
