Okay, it sounds to me as if those I wouldn't be able to pick up at this time are Graeme, Adam, John 2, Scott, John 4, and Michael. I don't know enough about the worlds they are in to wing it and I doubt there's much of a scenario written. John 1 I wouldn't feel very comfortable picking up because we've got our own game in stasis somewhere in which he has about seven or eight highly dangerous and unpredictable followers, mostly females, as well as several other women in the verse who would like to kill him permanently. This leaves Kurt, Eli, Ahmetia, Harry, John 3, Nikolaj, Shawn, and Brock. Think I'll create a seperate thread and find out who's alright with switching and who would rather not; that seems more fair than putting names in a hat and picking at random.
Ky
Thank you for the quick overview of the games, MJ! That was very useful and informative, particularly to folks who do not often read any thread except this one... :)
Speaking of fainting. A 3 and a 30 can have the same outcome. A 3 in that situation would be that Sarah was asleep for several hours. A 30 would also mean that she was out for several hours, but it would be because she hit her head and severely injured herself. She would still be out cold.
Unless I'm completely misunderstanding game mechanics that's not true John. GE roles are based on the characters hopes and fears. Unless a severe head injury is so far on the side of fear for your character. I somehow doubt this however as you seem to be repeatedly risking a mental breakdown for your poor mother.
It was a thread I started, which has long since died, postulating if a 3 and a 30 could have the same outcome. My hope was that Sarah would be asleep for several hours. My fear would be that Sarah would injure herself falling down. The result is the same though. She would be asleep for several hours.
If you WANT her to sleep, the worst is she doesn't. Like an injury wherein she remains conscious: a major bleeding wound, and she is weakly trying to crawl to a phone. Far worse than knocking herself out. We've been over this all before John. A minor side effect might be similar in each situation, but SOMETHING makes it really good/bad, the absolute best circumstance vs. the absolute worst.
Yeah Brock, I know we've been over it. It's just something I find fascinating to think about. I know it's not possible, because the game mechanics wouldn't allow it. It's interesting to think about nonetheless.
A 3 and a 30 can have the same outcome. A 3 in that situation would be that Sarah was asleep for several hours. A 30 would also mean that she was out for several hours, but it would be because she hit her head and severely injured herself. She would still be out cold.
Setting aside the issue of whether these are the inconceivably best and worst possible outcomes (which I don't think they are), the fact is that you distinguish them in your description. A three is not the same as a thirty in what you described. The three is that your mother is fine but having blacked out shifts from unconscious due to fallen blood pressure to actual sleep; the thirty is that your mother falls and injures herself severely, remaining unconscious for hours.
Now, knowing that you particularly want her to stay asleep for hours, I know that any roll which has her stay asleep for hours is not the worst thing that could happen, because it has a benefit to you; so that's not a thirty outcome, as Brock observes. But you say "because the game mechanics wouldn't allow it" as if that's a reason. Let's try again.
Let's suppose that my best hopes are to play at Carnegie Hall and so become one of the world's most successful and recognized musicians. Let's suppose that my worst fears are to play at Carnegie Hall and do so badly that I become world famous as a watchword for really horrible musical failure stories. You're trying to say that both my best hopes and my worst fears have me playing at Carnegie Hall, and so they're the same. How can my best hopes and my worst fears be the same? They are only similar to the degree that they both require that I play at Carnegie Hall. The part that matters is whether I play there successfully to fame and fortune or play there horribly to derision and failure. In fact, the "almost as good/almost as bad" results could have me doing the same thing at the Paladium or the Felt Forum or some other world famous concert hall of somewhat less reputation--slightly less consequent fame or shame. But in this scenario, the outcome is not about whether I played at Carnegie Hall but whether in doing so I was an overnight success or an overnight disaster.
So, too, if we did not have the factor that you want her to be unconscious for several hours, we could imagine that a good roll would have her resting and a bad roll would have her injured, and the level of consciousness would be a measure of how well she was resting or how badly she was injured. However, since in this specific case you want her to be unconscious, no bad roll would result in her being unconscious for any significant length of time. Bad Roll Equals Character Does Not Get What He Wants But What He Wishes To Avoid. Bad roll means Sarah can't sleep again for a week, or Sarah figures out that John is attacking her with something to make her sleep, or Sarah dies and John can never speak to her again.
Get it in your head: better than anything the character could hope to want and worse than anything the character could ever have imagined to fear cannot be the same outcome, because they must be different in the only aspect that matters to the roll, which is what the character wants versus what the character fears. Yes, there can be similarities between these, but when someone says that what he most wants he also most fears, he usually means that he perceives this object as a step beyond which the next step is either wonderful or terrible and he cannot predict which. You will never find a situation in which those best hopes and worst fears are exactly the same thing, and however it is that makes them different, that's the real difference between the rolls.
So, hopefully that's settled, finally.
Eli is moving through training; Michael is following someone; Brock is about to see a space station blow up; Harry is talking with his wife; John 2 is up to some kind of nonsense, and Kyler is teaching Kat.
I'm returning the Tonfa SAL to 1@3 because he's not practicing that; he is practicing the Bo Stick, so that will stay elevated. Now I've got to get back on track with the training and the date. We've got to add 25 days to October 23rd, which is 48 minus 31 equals November 17 (see how easy that was?), getting late in the autumn, and he's in the mountains. We need a GE roll, 15 is still not unfavorable. The medical skills have to be rolled against the teacher's teaching skill, 43%, 77, 08, which means the diagnosis (which I always roll second because that's what I did the first time) improves to 1@6 Medical Diagnosis (herbalism) T6@0, but the treatment remains the same. As to the Japanese, 48 is close but no advance there. Continuing to track the attributes and skills
- Aerobics (running) for stamina, Day 125 of 200 day advances
- strength training for strength, Day 100 of 200 day advances
- Martial arts practice has resets and now is at Day 25 of 100 day advances, tracking
- Aggressive Running Frontal Power Boost B3@10
- Aggressive Running Side Slide B3@10
- Eli's Style B7@1
- 2@2 Back Kick B7@1
- Bo Stick B7@1
- Elbow Strike B7@3
- Back Kick B7@3
- Power Front Kick B7@3
- Flying Side Kick B7@3
- Roundhouse Kick B7@3
I somehow missed copying the fact that Michael learned martial arts from Eli; that gives him a 7@1 bias. He's correct that his climbing skill is not as high a bias as that, but I think he underestimates the SAL--I'm going to list him at 1@10+2 Climb (specializing in rock climbing) B1@3 because most people climb something, and to be specializing in rocks suggests he's on the cusp of a professional SAL in climbing rocks. But back on point, he's trying to learn a 0@6 stealth stalking skill, with a 7@1 bod bias, 1@8 BRA, and we've got a 15@ bod bias in this world, so that's what, 98%? Let's roll and see if it's even close to that: 33 is a certain 1@1 Stealth/Stalking B0@6 (used in castle) success.
I'll add to his weaknesses that Brock is borderline asthmatic. I'll also wrap up most of the rest of this scenario; perhaps Kyler will want to pick it up here.
Having gotten Harry through the latest crisis, it's time to give him another GE roll. The roll is 17, so we've got a stretch of business as usual.
John 2 is going for a sleep spell. His intention is that the 0:12 ritual will give him a +10 bonus; the fact that he's got no movement or material means single component, -10, so that puts him at the baseline. My recollection is that a sleep spell puts someone to sleep for one minute; he's hoping that having been put to sleep Sarah will stay asleep, because he is certain (without any proof) that she was awake most of the night. Since it never occurred to me that she was awake most of the night, he's going to need a better than middling GE roll to get even that much. On the skill learning roll he gets an 18; Sleep is a 10@5 enchantment, within the curve. 1@1 Cause Sleep M10@5 0:12TF say "[Name], go back to sleep. That's an order from the future leader of the world resistance.", +5SM which he gets for appropriate words. That will cause her to sleep for one minute; he pulls off an 11 GE roll, which is good but below expectations. We'll see what happens next.
If I'm going to detail Kat more, I'm going to need more from Kyler.
--M. J. Young
So, hopefully that's settled, finally.
It was never NOT settled, really. It was just a really stupid idea that I found fascinating. Similar but not the same, I get that. I pointed that out. One is she's asleep, one is she's injured. That is similar but not the same.
because he is certain (without any proof) that she was awake most of the night. Since it never occurred to me that she was awake most of the night, he's going to need a better than middling GE roll to get even that much.
I do believe you said that she looked exhausted. Why would she look that way unless she had been awake most of the night?
(Doing Therapy)
Why did strength training remain at 100 of 200 days?
Regarding the 3 and 30 being the same. I know that it can't happen. I understand that completely. I still find it an interesting, fascinating concept to think of. How "Similar but not the same" can they get?
I still say a 3 and 30 can have the same outcome. I know it's against mechanics, I don't need it explained to me why it's wrong. To a smoker, winning a lifetime supply of cigarettes would be either a 3 or a 30. If you're not a smoker, you have no foundation to refute that. I know it's against the mechanics, but that would be seen as either 1 in 1,000 good luck or 1 in 1,000 bad luck to a smoker. I don't need it explained at all. If you're not a smoker, it's something you could never understand.
(Doing Therapy)
John, you're arguing a point that you concede is wrong.
The GE role is a mechanic. It is nothing past that. As such the mechanic can not be against the mechanic.
Please stop making an argument and then masking it by saying "I already know this is wrong" or by using examples and claiming no one is allowed to argue.
OK, let me put it another way. Throw the game mechanics out the window. We're talking real life. To a smoker, that would be seen as either 1 in 1,000 good luck, or 1 in 1,000 bad luck. Every smoker I've talked to, including myself, feels the same way. I was just using the GE roll as a vehicle for the idea that 1 in 1,000 good luck and 1 in 1,000 bad luck can be the same. Really, it's more of an inside joke that only a smoker would understand, than a refutation of game mechanics.
Kyler, I seem to recall you saying that you smoked. As a smoker who understands the game mechanics, wouldn't you agree that winning a lifetime supply of cigarettes would count as either a 3 or a 30? (And by that I mean 1 in 1,000 good luck or 1 in 1,000 bad luck)
(Doing Therapy)
Because of a typo. I'll fix it on the next run; thanks for catching it.Why did strength training remain at 100 of 200 days?
It looks like today, at least, I'm running games for Michael, Ahmetia, Brock, Kurt, and John 2. The load is lighter, and that's a good thing. Thank you, Kyler.
Before I apply Michael's stated course of action, I want to make sure he is set on it. He seems to think that his thoughts must have been overheard, but that assumes the man he is following is a telepath--and the man he is following seems to be suspicious of telepaths.
I had to look up what a Scotch egg was, and having found it I must admit I have never seen one. It sounds interesting; I'll have to mention it to the daughter-in-law who owns a deep fat fryer. Meanwhile, we'll start adjusting Ahmetia's royal diet. Sausage is very German (it's everywhere, of course, but Germans are big on sausage) and Ruritania is one of those Germanic kingdoms. Flapjacks are a modern American variety of flatbread, which goes back forever so everyone has it in some form. Oatmeal, though, was a peculiarly Scottish food until the Quaker Oats Company managed the first modern advertising campaign to get people to eat it for breakfast--and that's still a few years in the future, and starts in America. At this time of history, only Scotsmen and horses eat oats.
I think we'll follow Brock's line on his distress at the battle. Marilyn will undoubtedly be awaiting him in the galley.
Kurt is learning about firebuilding.
John 2 appears to have made a decision based on player knowledge of a mechanic, so I'm challenging it. It happens that I already do know roughly how long Sarah will be asleep; but his character has no way of knowing whether it will be a minute or a month, so he can't decide based on the roll he doesn't know.
I can appreciate Scott's coded rolls. I'd try to think of a similar system for my own use, but really, someone would crack it, particularly since the solutions would have to be given at some point when the numbers were revealed.
--M. J. Young
John 2 appears to have made a decision based on player knowledge of a mechanic
Appears to have made. However, I didn't make it based on that. He's been waiting for this opportunity for a while. I would have stated the same actions even if it was a 30 roll. The comment about the GE roll was just that, a comment. It had nothing to do with the decision making process.
The comment about the GE roll was more like confirming that I had time to do what I would have done anyway.
*squee!* MJ you will NOT be disappointed. These are among the yummiest foodstuffs known to man. I look forward to the Friends of Faire Burns Dinner every year because my friend Steve makes these and they are the food of the gods. Not even kidding you. Everyone needs to experience Scotch eggs at least once in their lives. Everyone. Even vegetarians. :)I had to look up what a Scotch egg was, and having found it I must admit I have never seen one.
Hard boiled egg, wrapped in sausage meat, coated with breadcrumbs or breading, and fat fried? I'm thinking, though, that I ought to get one from someone who knows how to make them, rather than attempting to make them simply from that instruction.
I'm not certain when or whether I'm going to lose a few people, but at the moment it appears that I have posts from Eli, Michael, Brock, Harry, John 2, and Adam, so let's tackle them.
I've got to update one of these because of a mistake I made last posting, but let's do it all decently and in order.
It was November 17 for Eli, and we add 25 days to get November 42, which is equal to December 12. We need a GE roll for the weather, 11 suggests a particularly mild December. The medical treatment skill did not advance last time so it does so this time, but since the roll was successful on the diagnosis skill we roll for it again this time, 93, failure, and that does not advance, so we have 1@6 Medical Treatment (herbalism) T6@1, both at the same level but the diagnosis increasing automatically next time and the treatment requiring another roll. The Japanese also increases automatically, 1@6 Japanese Language P0@0. The rest are still in process:
- Aerobics (running) for stamina, Day 150 of 200 day advances
- strength training for strength, Day 150 of 200 day advances
- Martial arts practice has resets and now is at Day 50 of 100 day advances, tracking
- Aggressive Running Frontal Power Boost B3@10
- Aggressive Running Side Slide B3@10
- Eli's Style B7@1
- Back Kick B7@1
- Bo Stick B7@1
- Elbow Strike B7@3
- Back Kick B7@3
- Power Front Kick B7@3
- Flying Side Kick B7@3
- Roundhouse Kick B7@3
I will list Michael as a 1@8 above average amateur at a skill I'm going to call Tackle B7@2 brings down target with base annoying damage. His 1@8 strength stands for his Bod BRA (I don't have an agility for him, but his will power is 1@7). Martial Strike Value is 1@8 strength plus 2@3 hand/eye plus 1@7 intuition, divided by three, is 58/3=1@9. He's got 2x7@ bod bias, so his attack base is 18+18+19+14=69 minus the defender's TV. Durer is going to need some numbers. Those are going to be surprisingly high, actually, given his appearance, but let me get the ones we need. 1@7 Agility plus 2@5 intuition plus 1@2 density divided by three is 54/3=1@8 TV. That gives Michael 51% chance of successfully bringing down his target, and his roll is 73.
Brock's reaction to the death of the technician will not have gone unnoticed, and so the ship's counselor and negotiator is actually waiting for him.
Some of Harry's questions require rolls, some require only imagination. There's an 18 GE on the hose. There's a 10 on the pirate trap.
Sarah is undoubtedly by now doubting her own sanity; we'll see what John 2 does next.
I'm starting work on Adam's list.
--M. J. Young
I'm fully intending to press my luck.
(Doing Therapy)
Kyler has suffered a disruption in circumstances which is likely to delay him a bit, so I'm continuing all games currently. Tonight that means Eli, Michael, Brock, Kurt, Harry, John 2, and Adam, and if no one has noticed, it got late when I attempted to pack some extra errands into the night.
It was December 12 for Eli; 12+25=37, -31=January 6. The roll for the conditions is 12, good enough, but it's still January in the mountains. Medical diagnosis advances automatically to 1@7 Medical Diagnosis (herbalism) T6@0; treatment requires a roll, 46, no advance. Japanese gets a roll as well, 18 pushing it to 1@7 Japanese Language P0@0. The others are
- Aerobics (running) for stamina, Day 175 of 200 day advances
- strength training for strength, Day 175 of 200 day advances
- Martial arts practice Day 75 of 100 day advances, tracking
- Aggressive Running Frontal Power Boost B3@10
- Aggressive Running Side Slide B3@10
- Eli's Style B7@1
- Back Kick B7@1
- Bo Stick B7@1
- Elbow Strike B7@3
- Back Kick B7@3
- Power Front Kick B7@3
- Flying Side Kick B7@3
- Roundhouse Kick B7@3
Aspects of the situation unknown to Michael play against him, but he still gets a GE roll--it just gets read with those facts in view. The roll is 16, in the middle. He's not going to be given the opportunity of speaking before the respected councilor of the most powerful nobleman apart from the queen, but we'll give him the chance to speak once that person has had the chance to set the scene.
Brock has begun to open up to the counselor; we'll see where that goes.
I'm dropping a 1@5 Simple Fire Skills Package T1@X on Kurt's sheet. I'm not sure he actually has all the skills, such as torch and ignite fire from electrical current, but it will save me time. He'll also start learning some of the other local skills.
We'll cover Harry's situation with a GE roll, 16, business as usual.
John 2 is trying to talk again. He gets one shot at saying what he wants to say, but he rolled 39, which I think--well, I have to check again. 1@2 SAL, 2x1@ bias, 1@7 will power, that's 31% chance.
We're working on a lot of skills for Adam, trying to tackle three at a time at the moment, but making progress.
--M. J. Young
1@2 SAL, 2x1@ bias, 1@7 will power, that's 31% chance.
Where does the 2x1@ bias come from? My body bias is 1@? I thought it was 2x the world bias. Or is it 2x whichever bias is lower? What is the world body bias? Does it come into play here at all?
Are you certain my bod bias is 1@? I believe that was for sitting. I've successfully spoken. Shouldn't my bod bias reflect the ability to speak? Is that a higher bias than sitting?
(Doing Therapy)
The body skill for speech is the same for monkeys screeching, crickets chirping, or birds singing. It's B0@6 Signal Generation. It's not language unless you're also using a P0@0 Language skill. As infants all over the world demonstrate, it's easier to make noises than to sit up, and that's all the bod skill covers: making noises.
The bonus to skill success is indeed 2x whichever is lower. The bod bias in earth-like worlds is usually very high, thanks to creatures like polar bears and butterflies.
Thanks Scott. For some reason, I thought actually speaking might be higher biased than just baby babble. I don't know why.
Curious, as MJ pointed out, I had 2@7 speech. Is that not a bonus? An example or something?
(Doing Therapy)
The skill role is for whether your body can produce the sound, not whether you know the sounds.
You could have a great speech memorized but fail the skill check to produce noise in a controlled manner and you wouldn't manage to say it, no matter how good your grasp of the language is.
That's "roll". A "role" is what you're playing, in character. Yeah, I hate homonyms too.
Just trying to learn.
(Doing Therapy)
Wow, good catch. I normally proof read before posting. I do know the difference though, I promise.
Yes, but failing a roll to generate the noise necessary to make a speech is usually not a problem. It's just when you're young, and when you have a speech impediment. Or in very contrary conditions.
I'd have to do a bit of math to figure out the dimensions of a cone of that volume, but it's probably around twenty feet long and ten feet wide at the terminus on a guess.
Cone Volume = (1/3) * pi * radius^2 * height
If Cone Volume=1000 cubic foot, diameter=10 feet,
radius=5 feet
height=38.197 feet (approximate value)
If Cone Volume=1000 cubic foot, height=20 feet,
radius=6.9 feet (approximate value)
diameter=13.8 feet (approximate value)
So that was a good guess.
I had mentioned producing the noise in a controlled manner, so I think you and I are saying the same thing Brock.
I think you two are in agreement, but your post could have been misinterpreted to mean that every attempt to use language necessarily also required a signal generation check; Brock's post was intended to clarify that point.
Correct, Scott. I was merely saying the roll isn't usually needed. It's only in special circumstances, like in John's story now.
Well what I was saying about the example bonus is that, whether my current body can make the sounds or not, I DO have 30+ years experience at making A BODY make those sounds. I thought that might be good for something. (Emphasizing)
That is already taken into account in the MV rules, as I understand it. See the Zygote Experience's rules.
John try using em contained within <> symbols before what you are emphasizing, and /em in those symbols afterward. It's how you italicize.
Yes Brock, I know it's how you italicize, but I also think it's too difficult to read, and it doesn't always give the type of emphasis you're after. Sometimes, writing in ALL CAPS is the only emphasis that works. Other times, writing things in boldface is the only emphasis that works.
First, let me extend wishes for an enjoyable Independence Day to all of our U.S.A. players. Of course they have a Fourth of July in Canada and Belgium and elsewhere, but they don't celebrate it.
Second, Kyler asks that I convey his expectations that he will be here to take over the games he has indicated, but the current disruption in his life is delaying that. I will leave it to him what more to say about that disruption, if he chooses to do so.
For what it's worth, John, ALL CAPS IS REGARDED AS SHOUTING. Emphasis is obtained with italics or boldface, and there is some subtle difference between the two. In some contexts, /slashes/ are used with the same impact as italics, but usually only when italics are not an option in the coding. I think that italics create what we might call an emphatic stress, while boldface is more of a firm stress.
But all caps is SHOUTING, an expression of anger or fear. That's why we don't want you to use it--you have no write to yell at us, and we don't want to hear it.
- I note that in those formats in which small caps are possible (not here, as far as I know--I just tried by the only HTML means I know for that), they have a different force, more of a sense of formality.
The fact that you were able to produce sounds in the other body does give you an example for learning to produce sounds in this one. That actually was a skill you learned the day you were born, when they smacked your bottom and induced you to cry. You are gradually gaining the ability to control the audio signal you produce. Your Psi language skill is still intact, and is the skill I normally use in situations in which a roll for speaking is required; but as has been noted in this thread, you can think all the complicated statements you want without difficulty, but you struggle to make your voice form the sounds you want. The fact that the other body also has a 2@something signal generation skill is only relevant as an example for learning the skill, which as mentioned you have already learned. Now you have to practice it and develop the muscular control (not to mention grow the teeth) that makes the extremely complex process of forming specific sounds simple.
With that covered, Let me cover the posts from Eli, Michael, Brock, Kurt, and John 2.
Eli wants to continue his training and practice, which means we have to advance the calendar another twenty-five days from January 6, which is January 31. He did not address my concerns about his continued running in the deepening snow, but we'll see what the GE roll gives him--even a good roll isn't going to prevent there from being snow in the mountains in January, and 14 is not all that good a roll. We need a roll for diagnosis, 93 is no advance, but treatment advances automatically to 1@7 Medical Treatment (herbalism) T6@1. 46 on the Japanese is higher than the target 43%, so that does not advance at this point. We also list
- Aerobics (running) for stamina, Day 200 of 200 day advances stamina to 1@7
- strength training for strength, Day 200 of 200 day advances, Strength 2@1. He crossed the level barrier on strength, so he also increases his density to 1@2; these will impact his MSV, TV, and DV, none of which are on his sheet, and also increase his BRA for bod.
- Martial arts practice Day 100 of 100 day advances, tracking
- 1@7 Aggressive Running Frontal Power Boost B3@10 uses one attack RS=+DC to next forward kick-based attack (Power Front Kick), on failure fall for damaging damage
- 1@7 Aggressive Running Side Slide B3@10 uses one attack +RS=SM to next side-arc kick-based attack (Side Kick, Flip Kick)
- 2@3 Eli's Style B7@1 Fast Aggressive Weapon-utilizing style, kick- and punch-based, RF2, +10 Att SM +10 Att Dam Mod.
- 2@3 Back Kick B7@1 basic attack on opponent directly behind
- 1@5 Bo Stick B7@1 RF1 damaging two-handed
- 1@7 Elbow Strike B7@3 base dangerous attack at close range RF1 -10SM
- 1@10 Back Kick B7@3 base dangerous RF1 -10SM, +10 opponent attack SM
- 1@10 Power Front Kick B7@3 base damaging -10SM
- 1@7 Flying Side Kick B7@3 base dangerous RF1 -10SM, on failure lose balance and forfeit next attack
- 1@10 Roundhouse Kick B7@3 base damaging RF1 -10SM
Michael does not get out of his current dilemma, but he learns a great deal more in it.
We'll continue Brock's therapy session.
I've written the instructions for Kurt and with the example and instructor bonus of the best quarterstaff user in most of history I'm not going to need to crunch numbers, just roll them. He rolls 17, 1@1 Use Quarterstaff T3@1.
I'm not buying the "change in circumstances" of John 2's efforts to calm himself and enunciate. Since talking is so difficult for him anyway, I'm assuming he already was trying to enunciate. I will skip that and go to the prayer, which has a 1@1 SAL and +8 Sit-mod, +9 for religion SAL, +14 for 2x7@ mag bias, +2@2 for BRA, -5 for alliance holy magic in a neutral world, and I'm going to penalize -10 because he's getting the skill to do something that was not part of the original form: translate his words into something the target can understand. If he makes it, I'll give him new use. That's a 49% chance of success, and the roll is 08, so it works, and he gets his increase to 1@2. Of course, there's still the general effects roll for how Sarah, who does not believe in magic, reacts to hearing this voice apparently in her own mind. The roll is 15, not unfavorable, which is not strong enough to get what he wants.
--M. J. Young
I'm going to penalize -10 because he's getting the skill to do something that was not part of the original form: translate his words into something the target can understand.
I thought that WAS the original purpose.
And for what it's worth, I've always seen it that ALL CAPS and boldface both indicated either shouting or firm stress.
emphasis, strong/firm, and SHOUTING. the first two are right there in the code, em and strong. Caps is more emphasis, just to a stronger degree than the other two methods. the same degree anger or fear induces. Basically, what MJ said.
Oh, and MJ-"you have no write to yell at us, and we don't want to hear it."
Agreed. Also, right, not write.
Oh, and MJ-"you have no write to yell at us, and we don't want to hear it."
Agreed. Also, right, not write.
Brock, you missed the joke I think.
Since you're not "hearing" anything, I'll type however I damn well please.
Two
Not trying to be rude with that, BTW. To me, italics should be used to denote sarcasm, not emphasis. I mean tell me this font isn't sarcastic looking? To me, boldface looks like yelling. I mean, you went to all the trouble of typing < strong > just to get your point across, you must be upset. To me, CAPS looks more like emphasis. I MEAN, TELL ME THIS DOESN'T GET YOUR ATTENTION!!!!! That's why I use caps for emphasis. That's just my thoughts on it.

It is precisely because IT GETS YOUR ATTENTION that it is yelling. Bold gets your attention somewhat, which is why it is 'softer' in tone, compared to caps.
Also, !!!!!!!!!!! grabs attention even more, making it 'sound' like you are even louder.
Well yeah, but personally, I think the bold gets your attention a lot faster. I notice bold on a page before anything else.
