You wouldn't necessarily be stuck in an infinity loop forever.
Some things, once is too often to do them. An infinity loop, even if you're only in it for one run, that was too many times.
(Doing Therapy)
I'm just saying, it isn't the end of the campaign because it doesn't have to be a true infinity loop in the strictest sense. Eventually an outside influence can be brought in and say to you, "Dude, you're a verser stuck in an infinity loop", and you can say "Ah crap" and eat a lead sandwich.
For instance.
One thing I liked in the TV series was where they mentioned the Singularity. That gives me something to think about in connection with a Terminator sorta like world.
"Dude, you're a verser stuck in an infinity loop", and you can say "Ah crap" and eat a lead sandwich.
No, I was John Connor. I think he stays in the loop if he verses out. I can't even commit suicide.
(Doing Therapy)
Another verser would know that you're a verser, and you could make that choice; and if you couldn't, you could let the other verser make it for you.
MJ says you know the theory almost as well as he. What happens to John Connor if he dies as a verser? His death starts an infinity loop. The book said something about versing out and going back to repeat the loop. What happens to John Connor?
(Doing Therapy)
If you're a verser in a time loop, the theory says that you exist in every timeline you exist in simultaneously; thus, if you were to die, you would pop in on the other timeline, and were you to also die there, you'd go to the other timeline; until every established "different"/alternate you in the universe was dead, at which point you would verse out.
You saw Pearl Harbor as a test of non-involvement. I see it as a prime example of why versers should not get involved. Whether the US enters the war on time is beside the point. You've just saved countless high-ranking officers. Officers which will be giving orders in the upcoming war. Officers who would have been dead otherwise. Perhaps it will be their orders which end up losing WW2. Your story The Perpetual Barbecue. Dr. Arnold Hess "Did nothing of consequence" but changed the day radically. That was just one man.
You saw it as a test of non-involvement, I saw it as a prime example of why versers shouldn't get involved.
(Doing Therapy)
So true, John.
But why should we stop at versers? Our actions could be impacting other people every day. We should all practice non-involvement and hide from the world, just in case one of the decisions we make today ends up inadvertantly destroying the entire world as we know it.
Now you know one of the multitude of reasons why I don't go out very much. Thank you Kyler. You just made my entire case.
You must be very malnourished. Any food you eat could have been eaten by another person, who may have had an allergic reaction and died from anaphylactic shock. That person could have grown up to kill millions of people, so eating the food that was meant to kill them would be a great disservice to the world.
I'm not saying you should starve yourself. I'm just saying that for me, noninvolvement theories of the multiverse make little sense unless done in specific sorts of ways.

What is wrong with this thing????
I had to bump this 5 times.
My last post, I was just messing with you.
Jumping headfirst into scenarios theories make about that much sense to me. I don't care about the world in which I live. Why should I care about a world I'm just visiting?
In Dancing Princess, I went after the demons because demons have no place in a world meant for people. Please note, I had no interest in the intended mission until I found out about the demons.
In TerraNova, I went on that mission out of some twisted sense of loyalty to Lauren Hastings. I knew my character was half in love with her and would follow her just about anywhere. Left to my own devices, I would have bought a lawn chair and a box of popcorn and found a window with a good view of the collision. Then just sit back and watch it hit the station. I'll survive it, everyone else is in God's hands.
In Dark Honor Empire: Beta, I chose not to go on a mission with the other ninja; since I wasn't there, their mission was a failure and one of my fellow ninja would be tortured and executed.
In the Advanced Dungeons and Dragons world I was in, I helped many people by killing monsters and making the world a safer place. If I hadn't been involved, who knows what would have happened.
In Why Spy, I didn't have a choice whether or not to be involved, yet I still made some of my own choices; I did try to kill C. If that had worked, it would have been a service to any other versers who went there.
In the Slasher Summer Camp world, my actions prevented the deaths of several young teenage boys.
Since my arrival in Northgate City, I've stopped two muggings and a giant ant from destroying several blocks, and thwarted the efforts of the Snake.
Why choose noninvolvement when you can choose so many more interesting stories?
Why choose noninvolvement when you can choose so many more interesting stories?
Because I'm playing myself. Yeah, doing what I'm "supposed" to do would make a more interesting story, but it's not what I would do in that situation. I wouldn't be playing myself. After his encounter with the MP, my character is way more trigger happy, but no more interested in things which don't concern him. I like Eric's style. MJ wanted me to go out of my way to engage the enemy. Eric brings the enemy to me.
(Doing Therapy)
Well, I guess you can't have an interesting story when you're a boring sort of person.
I'm just kidding. Part of what you have to remember is that your character is you under extraordinary circumstances. The system shock from having your entire world taken from you could have several effects on your psyche, and only you can say how you'd handle it.
No, I am a boring sort of person. I think I've been accurate in my self-portrayal so far. My character is no longer psychotic, and I can't even begin to guess how that would affect him. That's my pseudo-rational explanation for when he does things I couldn't see myself doing. Aside from that, I think I've been playing myself accurately.
Two
I've been working on a list of game openers for worlds like Pearl Harbor. How and where do I post it? I think the opening of the MP really only works if the player is certain to warn the of the attack. Barring a horrifically bad GE roll, the most likely thing which would have happened after I was taken into custody would be either being let go or put into a holding cell. If I hadn't crashed the jeep, that is. Being put into a holding cell, you're a verser. Getting killed in the attack isn't a big deal. Being let go, the pressure is off completely. If the player doesn't want to warn them, you didn't pressure them very much. I would have had no problem sitting in a holding cell for 2 days. I'd have even less of a problem with being let go. ANY OTHER OPENING, you would have seen how far I would go to NOT get involved, as I made an armed escape. Being taken into custody, no pressure, barring a really bad GE roll.
How do I publish this on the main forum? It's a list of about a half-dozen openings, and what kinds of players they would work for.
(Doing Therapy)
Are you asking how to post to the forum or how to start a thread?
The add new button to the side of topic is how you start a thread.
Also, since I don't want to clutter the thread that the question mark was in, Michael from planet Dirt is the beginning of my adventures in TerraNova.
How to post an article on the other forum. I know how to start a thread.
(Doing Therapy)
I think you mean how to post an article on the main site Gaming Outpost, not how to post to Gaming Outpost Discussions forums.
Yeah, what Brock said.
OK then.
1. The main site is not a forum, hence the confusion.
2. I have already tried to post an article and couldn't figure it out either...something about the site kept crashing Firefox. Wierdest thing. So I gave up on it, and posted the info in some other spot, I forget where. That was some time ago, now.
Why is it important to post it there as opposed to as a thread? Do you specifically not want our feedback?
You can still give feedback if it's an article. If it's an article, it's on the main page and anyone can see it, not just players.
Articles are best put on the main site. The articles get seen more, and our forum membership is also a membership to the main site. I would suggest appending a link said article in this or some other topic, once it is successfully up.
BUT HOW???????????????????
(Doing Therapy)
Still don't know, sorry. Wait for MJ.
I admit, the opening of the MP is a valid opening for that type of world. However, really, it would only work well if the player was absolutely certain to get involved. What's difficult about sitting in a holding cell for 2 days and waiting to verse out? Barring an exceptionally bad GE roll, that's exactly what would happen. I could do that standing on my head. Gunfighting the entire Pearl Harbor police force, now THAT shows some initiative to NOT get involved!!!!!!!!!!!!!
(Doing Therapy)
How about versing in on one of the Japanese aircraft carriers moving to attack? Did you get that one?
I don't speak Japanese, and I imagine an American would be shot on sight. I'd never know where I was and wouldn't live long enough to do anything even if I did.
(Doing Therapy)
So, you would get involved.
Kill them all before they get to Pearl Harbor, and you've averted the danger.
Let them kill you, and that's noninvolvemet.
If I have no idea where I am, I probably won't do anything. For all I know, the Japanese boat I'm on is an American ally delivering much-needed medical supplies. Why would I engage them if I don't know where I am?
On a different note, I based Bill and Ted off of Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure. Alex Winter player Bill and Keanu Reeves played Ted. Originally, Alex Winter tried out for the part of Ted, and Keanu Reeves tried out for Bill. WHAT DIFFERENCE DOES IT MAKE?????????? Bill strikes me as slightly more assertive and thus, the leader of the two, but aside from that, THEY'RE EXACTLY THE SAME!!!!!!!!! Oh well. Still one of the best time travel movies of all time.
I will say this though. The two actors had really good chemistry together. I wonder if they're still friends.
(Doing Therapy)
Non-involvement simply means you refuse, under any circumstances, to INTENTIONALLY ALTER THE NATURAL COURSE OF EVENTS. Thus, the stroy becomes one of preservation in the face of incredible temptation/intimidation/whatever challenge is thrown your way.
Brock, I had to be honest with myself. I was under the belief that, if I was killed in the attack, I would land in the next world with 40 broken bones. I would warn them. I'm inclined to think that you would stick to your values and not. If you landed in the next world with 40 broken bones, you would scream and cry until you figured out a way to heal yourself. The next time something like that happened, you would be thinking "Oh man, not again......" but still stick to your values and not warn them. I guess I'm not as strong as you are. That's the impression I get from you. Oh well. I lost a bet. It happens. Live and learn. For some reason I may never understand, it feels like it was "Supposed" to go the way it did. Like it was predestined or something. Or it could just be a psychotic hallucination.

Oh no. I am SO NOT a non-involvement player. I do what I believe will result in a benefit for society as a whole or myself as an individual, like any person of roughly "normal" morality. I would warn them, if possible doing so as a forecast, a prediction born of the little evidence available at the time (if indeed there was any). Otherwise, I still would have warned them, in a slightly-more-respectful-than-yours fashion. But I do indeed stick to my convictions like a rabid wolverine sticks to the creature it is biting. Thank you for the compliment.
I am just attempting to yet again clarify what non-involvement is. Yes, we have established you are not a non-involvement player. We have astablished you never were, and you were read wrong. We established that this was a life-changing event for you in your mind. We have established that you swing between detesting what happened and accepting that it made a good story, and everywhere between. What else do we really have to say on this topic? Why do you keep repeating the same viewpoints ad nauseum? Does it really help to rehash it like this?
