It is a metal door with a metal handle; the walls on either side are concrete and the hinges are on the other side.

As for the second question, "How would you know?"

Time to find a card key. Let's check the room at the end of the hall.

This room appears to be a janitorial closet. A broom and a mop in a bucket are leaning against a wall, next to a shelf carrying various chemical cleaners, a box cutter, packages of paper towels and hand soap, and a metal locker locked with a combination lock. Most are empty, but peering through the slits in the locker, you see what appears to be a uniform in one. There is also a slop sink, and there are several boxes on the ground.

"I'm thinking that the uniform might have a card for the door.
Any idea's on how to get it out?"

Stojan and Bradford each shake their heads.

"I could try to figure out the combination," Ashley suggests.

"Go ahead"

I'll guard the door while she works

"No," she says after a short time. "It's no good; why don't you shoot it, Stojan?"

"Remember what I said earlier about swiss cheese?"

"I wish I brought my crowbar, then this would be easy.
Let's go to the next door."

You head down the right-hand wall and reach another door on the right-hand side as well as a path to your left and path ahead.

This one is also locked.

Ashley points to the card machine. "What's that?"

You see a small symbol which resembles a bird.

I take a closer look at the bird symbol.

It's a small, black carving that seems to have been machine-etched in the card reader purposefully, perhaps for branding purposes or discerning the contents of the room; the meaning is at this point unclear.

On to the next room...

The next door has another card reader; however, it is slightly ajar. Inside the room looks dark.

I open the door.

The door swings open slowly.

The lights flicker.

A dark, black skinned ghoul leaps at you from within the room.

The door swings open slowly.

A dark, black skinned ghoul leaps at you from within the room.

I attack it with a normal Hiten Mitsurugi Ryu attack.

But I'll also need the style modifiers, weapon stats and your target value.

weapon-dependent, slow defensive, -15 defensive sm, +30 damage mod

TV 1@10
DV 1@10

katana Lethal +6

Alright, sensible, then, that it is rf1 and you have two strikes a round (for the MSV adjustment).

That puts you both at even for the round, so we'll say an attack occurs every fifteen seconds.

15 + 36 = 51 +dc style +dc msv +dc??

do you have another damage category bonus other than the one for style and the one for msv that I'm missing?

I also have a DC bonus for the style being professional.

I have six strikes per round (three for the expert level in the style * two for my 2@ MSV)

There should be one for the quality weapon, too, if it doesn't say it, add that.

I don't recall gaining two dc bonuses for having a professional SAL in the style and don't see an indication of that in the book, but I will give you one for professional SAL with the weapon.

6 attacks, yes, that makes more sense; as the style is weapon-dependent, they're all able to be used with the sword, regardless of the SAL with it. (what is the SAL with it? 3@1, right?)

That should bring us to lethal base +4 dc +30 for style +6 for weapon +1 for 3@1 SAL style +1 for 3@1 SAL sword against a 2@ damage value comes to annihilating damage category +48 for damage, so the roll is effectively ... 60 for damage calculations, divided by two is death.

§

Your cut comes before his swing, and you seperate his body into two halves, which both fall on the floor unmoving.

Stojan says to you, "You just killed one of them, one of the strong ones, in one swing." He seems beyond impressed, even amazed.

§

It isn't the strongest thing in this world, but it's still a tough opponent. Congratulations.

And I know what your two next worlds are.

Let's see, a roll of 1 +4dc -2dc is annihilating +38 is 39/3 casting out the remainder(which isn't here) is 13 intensities of damage at least to an individual with a 3@ damage value and no other defenses.

"...Remember what I told you about my origins? Still, At least it didn't explode when I hit it."

What else is in the room?

OOC:
If I am remembering this correctly, All martial arts styles grant A DC bonus to all bod
based attacks within the style. Being professional in the style grants another DC bonus.

I think you only apply the bonus from the martial arts SAL or the martial arts weapons SAL
to the attack, not both at the same time.

I think quality weapons only give a Damage Point Bonus between +1 and +10.

According to the initial section describing damage category bonuses and penalties in the combat chapter, weapons of quality confer a damage category bonus.

I'm fairly sure that you don't get both a DC bonus for the style and the weapon, at any rate, but I'm absolutely sure that with a weapon-utilizing style and not a weapon-dependent one you calculate the number of attacks seperately and are restricted by the maximum number of attacks for each; thus if you had 4 attacks with the sword and 8 with the style, you would have 8 attacks four of which could use the sword.

There are filing cabinets, computers, printers, and a copy machine.

"Maybe we can find something in here."

I search thought the filing cabinets.

You find bills and ledgers, cash statements for various purchases and sales.

Ashley walks up to you and hands you a key card. It is white, about the size and shape of a credit card, and has a silhouette of a bear in the top right corner, but no other imagery or identification is on it.

"Thank you,Now all we have to do is find a door with a bear icon."

I'm going to look for a door with a bear icon.

You find one after some searching; you also find doors with wolf emblems and doors with bird emblems.

This door is closer to the center of the complex. It doesn't have a handle; it seems that swiping the card will open the door.

You feel your pulse quicken, a feeling of palpable dread and anticipation emanating from your friends as you reach out to swipe the card.

I'm swipe the card.
I have my sword out and ready.

70 61 41 86 77 82 32 9 86 12 91 9 33 10 3 59 95 95 9 74 41 61 65 38

Should be enough for now.

(70 for style)

(61 initiative for you, 41 for him)

The room is full of them; the black skinned ghouls, too many to count at a glance but more than a dozen.

The first dives for you, and you miss him in your haste (86). Your next swing is also a miss (77), and the third (82) is too low to connect. He (32) strikes you solidly (09) with his fist on the front thumb side of your left arm. (4 intensities) That's going to leave a mark. (86) Your next swing misses, (14) but the fifth swing finally finds him, (91) lacerating through his kidney from the left and coming out his navel after severing his spine, putting him out of commission.

The next comes on his heels, and slice number six (09) cuts (33) through the exterior right side of his right elbow, severing it before cleaving into his skull and coming out clean halfway through his face. Two down, but the punch of the third stepping up (10) catches you off guard (03) in your throat. (One intensity of damage) You involuntarily gag a moment, but recover yourself.
That concludes round one. Special actions for next round? You're down a quarter, they are not quite.

I'm switching over to using
2@10 Ryu Kan Sen (Dragon Wind-up Flash) B7@3 base weapon RS/2' .
I'm hoping that it will knock a few down with each hit.

So, you're using the four of those you're able to, or two of them and three style basic attacks?

§

(59) (95) Your initiative.

Your first attempt (95)is a miss, but you manage to try again before he attacks, (09) killing him and sending him flying back into the room. (4 + 4 + 7 = 15) and crashing into another one deeper in the room, knocking him down.

§

Answer question asked at the top of this post to continue.

Four of the Ryu Kan Sen and two style basic attack.

After I hit it with the Ryu Kan Sen, I shout "FORE"

Hmm... I'll allow it.

16 16 53 43 68 45 32 14 79 73 67 78 92 98 40 84 41 34 51 96 04 34

§

You strike the next who comes up with another Ryu Kan Sen (16); this one dies (1 + 6 + 5 = 12) and knocks down three more. Four down, four dead.

The next one (43) manages to hurt you worse than you've been hit yet, (68) tripping slightly over one of the bodies, reaching around, and dragging its nails across the back of your left thigh. (5 intensities of damage, you are worn down to half your reserve.) You feel the warm flow of blood on the back of your leg. Ashley screams. You retaliate, lashing out before it has time to regain its balance, (45) striking it with another Ryu Kan Sen. (3 2 1 = 6) The body bursts, and the flying limbs knock down 5. As so many are down (9 down, 5 dead), it's easier to get a more accurate count of those standing; there are six standing and nine regaining their feet. One of the six steps up to the plate; your two swings (73 and 79) both miss him narrowly, but thankfully, his attempt (67) also misses.

New round. Continue with the same maneuvers? You have ten intensities remaining going into round three, and there are fifteen of them.

I continue with the same maneuvers.

What are Stojan, Ashley and Professor Bradford doing?

The question was anticipated, and the answer is that at the moment, you are blocking the doorway; any gunfire is very likely to hit you rather than the intended target, and any other misses are likely to ricochet, wreaking havoc. If you step back or into the room, they will be able to attack more than one at a time, but your companions may be able to join the fray.

Let's see how another minute turns out.
