To make sure I understand, you are going to test the superhuman virus on a sample of your own blood outside your body, and attempt to assess from the changes made within that sample whether it is likely to improve your attributes to any significant degree. Is that correct? If the test suggests that it would improve your abilities, at what point will you commit to using it?

--M. J. Young

Well I will test it, if it can bring my physical abilities to a 3@ as my Strength and Stamina are at 2@10, I need a stepping stone to breach that boundry, and this virus maybe the only one in this world to do it. I will take it, if it can do so. If it needs more than just blood, I will provide a sample of whatever tissue it needs to see the results.

Adam

The test will be complicated.

You will have to draw a muscle fiber from one of your test subjects and examine it genetically, and then you will have to draw a similar fiber from yourself and expose it immediately to the virus, give it a few days in a nutrient bath, and see whether the same changes appear. If that happens, there is a chance that this will work on you; but since you are a unique individual, it is possible that the test and the actuality will not match.

Your call.

--M. J. Young

Well nothing wrong with seeing what it could do to me. I will proceed.

Adam

Over the course of about a week, the exposed muscle fiber in the nutrient bath grows and reconfigures significantly. It appears that it does have a positive effect, at least in vitro.

Are you going to try it on yourself? Is Geneice going to try it?

--M. J. Young

We'll both try it.

Adam

O.K., before I do something foolish, I'm betting that I don't have all my numbers up-to-date. I'm going to fix that now, and apologize for not knowing the correct values.

For you, I have:

--M. J. Young

Let me post both our character sheets. That will kill two birds with one stone:

World List

I'm working through everything, but I've hit a discrepancy. You list

Mishap, Polymer 3@8 density Katana-model Vibrosword with Amethyst gem in hilt, dangerous+damaging dependent rider
Circumstance, Polymer 3@8 density Katana-model Vibrosword with Aventurine gem in hilt, dangerous+damaging dependent rider
I don't; I've a gap on my sheet where they were, and we both seem to have them listed for Geneice. Did you forget to delete these?

You have Geneice listed with biases in Psi and Mag comparable to yours; that has to be a copy error, as she's never been in a universe where she could actually perform such skills. Psi should be 0@1, Mag 0@0.

I have 1@6 Boxing B7@1 attack multiplier 1, slow defensive, weapon-adverse, no offensive modifier, -15 Defense modifier, -15 damage modifier, hand & arm listed for her; I don't know why, but I can't say for sure it's wrong (or whether I put it under the wrong character?).

That should fix everything.

I'm drawing a blank on one thing, though--what is Springfield XD-45 in the 4 inch barrel, night sights and 5 Springfield XD-45 magazines? You both have them, but I can't remember what they are, and I don't see skill listed for them.

*****

You and Geneice both take the virus.

You both get a bit ill, she more so than you. Your body fights off the virus, but she succumbs--and the serum does its work. She is now stronger and tougher than any human native to this world has ever been. She's also sharper and quicker.

--M. J. Young

The swords are a oversite, she has them, not me. As for her Bias skills, might be a misunderstanding, either way, that's fine. The springfields were bought in Kentucky during the Goldfinger episode.

Well I'm glad it works on her, but I need to make some adjustments and reinfect myself, I will keep adjusting it till it works on me the same way. I know the virus works, I just need to get it to make it look friendly to my white blood cells. Hopefully that will give me a bonus the next time I try. I will also make a counter virus for my special one.

Adam

You make the adjustments and try again. Your body works hard to reject it--you become feverish, sick to your stomach, and otherwise incapacitated for several days--but as you pull out of it, it is apparent that the virus has done its job.

Congratulations.

During this time, things have worsened; the United Nations is in turmoil, but is trying to organize troops to quell what is rapidly becoming a global civil war.

What's the next part of the plan?

--M. J. Young

I'm glad it worked. I ask C for the ok to give it as a "booster shot" to the US and UK armed forces, all of them. None of the subjects died, the virus works as planned, and he should agree, that in order to fight supermen, you need supermen of your own. This is WWIII, and it's not nuclear, it's genetics.

As for the plan, aside from training these guys, the only thing I can think of is "reinstating" my rank of Colonel, which is the highest rank officers that are still leading men personally on missions, and start dealing with the problem, while the new super soldiers get up to speed, and get their marching orders. I'll take control of these two hundred, and when another 800 get up to speed they can join me in the field. I also want Geneice enlisted as a Lt. Colonel, under me. I figure C is going to send me out to deal with this, he gave me the time to get a plan together. It's time to do what I can about the problem.

As much as personally I know Kahn is the problem, he doesn't know I know of him, so it's back to Panama to deal with the "King". I would hope I would be given the materials, men, machines to do my job. I'll see what C says.

Adam

C will support your work as well as he can.

List what you need; presumably it starts with command of this elite force, which is already multi-national and so will be organized along national lines, plus transportation for two hundred from England to Central America somewhere. Are you planning to jump, force-land planes, attempt to come ashore by boat, swim in seal-team style, or come overland from north or south?

What else do you need for yourself and your team?

Incidentally, Kahn is not "the problem". What you would have remembered about the story is that Kahn was only one of many local leaders; he and his inner circle managed to escape into space. No one local leader leads the whole; at present they are content to divide the world amongst themselves.

--M. J. Young

Nods, I will take charge of the first 200 or so, and will fill in the rest with soldiers and mechanized infantry after they get their boost. Since this is the US's part of the world, I would like to be brought in by boat, and have the US support me with the men and equipment coming from the north through Mexico. I would hope Mexico sees the threat and would let the tanks/trunks/men through to deal with the problems to the south. It is our job to take out resistance at the boarder at whatever country they stopped their advance at and start there. As for how to outfit them, as per any elite group, armor, weapons and gear suitable for a jungle environment, as that's where they are fighting at. So if Costa Rica is where they made their northern encroachment, that's where we start, with the stable supply line behind us, and open a whole for the US Military to punch a hole through to South America.

Adam

Let me be sure I'm clear on this.

You, plus two hundred men already boosted by the supersoldier serum, outfitted for jungle infantry, are going to make a marine landing (boats coming to shore to offload you) on the eastern coast of Costa Rica, while heavy equipment and artillery move through Mexico with the cooperation of the Mexican government to meet you there. Those reinforcements should include eight hundred more men who are just now being dosed with the superserum and should be ready within the month. You will be attempting to take out the enemy's top troops to weaken the defenses, so that when the reinforcements arrive they can start pushing back south to clean out Central America.

Do I have that right?

--M. J. Young

That is indeed correct.

Adam

O.K., let's get some details on the floatilla:

  • Where do you begin? Are you leaving from some Carribean island, or some point in Mexico or South America? Are you leaving from farther away in something big (battleship, perhaps?) and then disembarking into smaller boats for the last leg?
  • How many boats of what size are you using? Are all two hundred men in something like--well, I don't know what sort of boat you'd use for a landing of two hundred men. You tell me; what sort of boats do you envision, and how many?
  • Obviously part of the trip has to be made in daylight and part at night; when do you plan to hit the beach?
  • What steps are you taking to obscure your intentions from surveillance?
  • What equipment do you have on the boats besides the standard gear your men will need when they hit the shore?
You're up against some seriously intelligent adversaries; your plan is going to matter.

--M. J. Young

We will leave from Mexico, 10 miles from the border from Belize, and go at night and come up on those beaches 10 miles from the border, travelling 20 miles. We will start here, and make our way south to Guatemala, and figure out how are the influence goes. The boats will be 12 man inflatable boats with quiet outboard moters. We will take 12 of them, so we can take the equipment we need, and then we will hide them in the jungle deflated before we leave. As for non standard gear, aside from extra food and water, not much. We do not want to give our positions away, and we will need to live off the land to keep off the radar.

Adam

I understand all the details except that it appears you are moving two hundred men plus some spare equipment (mostly food and water) in a dozen boats each of which can carry a dozen men--which is space for one hundred forty-four. I figure you meant either that each of the dozen boats can carry twenty (bigger boats, 240 people), or you were taking two dozen boats (space for 288), but I thought I'd check. I don't know that it would matter, but it might make a difference.

Good plan, incidentally.

What color are the boats? Are you using lights or something to stay together?

--M. J. Young

I shouldn't post within 10 minutes of waking up.I meant 24 man boats. Olive drab in color. We will yse nightvision goggles for vision at night.

Adam

The seas are choppy and the wind is high; several times you are overflown by unidentified low-flying aircraft. You maintain radio silence, and stick together. One of your boats swamps, but everyone is brought aboard the other boats and you lose very little of the gear in the process.

It is near daybreak as you come within sight of shore; your GPS says this is the desired landing area. There is a small encampment a hundred yards from the edge of the beach, but it looks quiet in the dawn light.

--M. J. Young

*we will hide the boats, and look at the camp and see what we can see*

Adam

Your men work like clockwork ghosts, bringing the boats ashore and moving them up the sand toward the tall grasses in near silence. The surf is all you hear.

From this point, the camp appears to be a watch point, but whoever is on watch is not looking your direction yet. You've got a hundred yards; are you taking everyone to the camp, or organizing some sort of scouting check?

--M. J. Young

I will take up the snipers to get a bead on those on watch, and the rest of the men will advance once we take out their forward watch. For the snipers they are armed with the following: http://www.snipercentral.com/dpms308.htm , which is the standard special forces semi automatic rifle, with silencer. The normal men that aren't using the M249 SAW, are using M4's like what Geneice has, silenced and with grenade launchers. There is one M249 person in a squad of 4, so there are 50 snipers, 50 SAWs, and 100 infantry. The SAWs will take up positions lying down in the brush, the snipers will go in first setup position, once they start, the infantry forces will come in. This is a silenced procedure, the SAWs will only fire if things go badly. If all goes well, they won't need to do a thing. Geneice will be working on the radio jamming equipment, to stop a message from going out. As of right now, every military met is under the control of the "King" so they need to be avoided or pacified, and I don't see sneaking past them without them seeing a posibility right now.

Adam

Your men are moving into position when there is a shout from the camp. One of your snipers fires, taking out the scout that spotted you, but the camp has been alerted and is awakening. Several men with rifles are moving into view, and your snipers are bringing them down as they do, but orders are being shouted within the camp, apparently trying to organize the troops.

--M. J. Young

Well nothing like a little firefight to start a morning. I will give orders to short single shot making sure to choose shots carefully. I will order the M249s to take small three shot bursts at things they see moving. I will do the same with my sniper and hope Geneice is doing a good job on the jamming.

Adam

Since your radios won't work with Geneice jamming, you shout your orders. The men get it.

It takes about twenty minutes to bring an end to the matter; the last dozen of about fifty soldiers surrender. It's pretty evident that none of these people are part of the elite that have taken over, but are ordinary people conscripted to fight their war.

Your own men took only minor injuries, which are being tended.

The radio equipment seems to have been abandoned; they did not get a message out that way.

--M. J. Young

I will ask them what lies out to the west of here, and we will take off in that direction after packing up. About a half a mile into it, we will turn south and hug the shoreline for now. I'm pretty sure they sent a runner off, and they will come back. I will leave some of the guys in rear guard to make sure we aren't followed. Let's see where this goes.

Adam

What are you doing with your prisoners?

Half a mile inland you find a shore road--not a major highway, but a decent piece of solid ground that will make travel relatively swift and easy.

What are your hopes and fears?

--M. J. Young

We'll let em go, first taking their weapons, ammo, etc and placing them in a pile and use a thermite grenade to destroy them. I would hope we reach the border of the next country unmolested. We'll travel now, since we likely made out, but in the near future, we will sleep during the height of the day, and travel at night.

Adam

You run through the day and the night, and then find a suitable place to camp under cover the following morning.

Geneice observes that it won't take long before they're on to you, but even with the super soldiers rest is necessary, and there's little use in running them to exhaustion before they get into battle.

The questions, really, are how long it takes them discover you've landed, whether they'll be able to figure out which way you went. Your assessment of those questions will have an impact on which way you go from here.

--M. J. Young

Well My assessment is that is the GE roll is bad they have no clue where we are and where we are going. If the GE roll is good, they know where we went and know right away.

Adam

You get a night of rest, sending out a few recon men to scout ahead and behind, and trying to get satelite information on troop movements.

By morning you've got news. There is a unit of about three to four hundred coming down the road behind you, which will probably reach your current position in twelve hours; however, there is another force south of you moving to block the road, and they will be in your path about four hours south of here in about four hours; they number close to a thousand.

If you move south, you will probably run into the larger force as it reaches the road four hours from now, and then the other force will catch up around nightfall; if you return north you can catch the smaller force sometime in the early afternoon, but then you'll have the larger one coming up the road toward you during the night.

If you stay where you are, the larger force reaches you mid afternoon (eight hours) and the smaller early evening (twelve hours), coming at you from opposite directions.

Tactics?

--M. J. Young

Well well well, trying to come at us from two directions and with superior numbers. I doubt these are the super soldiers, this far out, and in these numbers, probably more troops, either conscripted or not. We will head back up the road, and engage the 400 first. About 60 minutes from encountering the 400, we will go off the road, where Geneice and I with our super strength will push down trees, and stacking them up, making a makeshift barrier around our area. I would say this area is 200 by 200, a diamond shaped, about 4 feet high. The troops will use the smaller trees and brush to make pungi sticks, and traps in the jungle to discourage them from trying to engage us in there. We will also use our claymores and explosives there as well, to make sure that any end around will come up with failure, and massive death for the enemy.

I will call C tell him the situation and since we have roughly 7 hours till we fight, if he can arrange to airdrop of regular mines, a large number of them, in parashooted crates on the beach, he can track me by my scriff, so he can give them crews an exact location. He should have the ear of someone in the US, and if they use a stealth aircraft, they can make sure it's not caught on radar.

When I say a large number, I'm thinking about 2000 anti personal mines http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Valmara_69 they are small and perfect for running a tripline across the road, as well putting the bulk of them in the soft earth on both sides of the road 1000 ahead and 1000 behind, leaving is a 50 foot wide strip, basically as wide as the corner that we can see going to the north and south of the road. The snipers will pick their places, the M249 machinegunners will entrench behind cover, and the rest defend out makeshift bunker. I will leave it to the people with Sat uplinks to give us accurate troop movements.

Adam

O.K., if you head north for five and a half hours, assuming your men and the enemy are moving at the same speed, they will be one hour north of you still; that will give you one hour to prepare for their arrival. It gives the Americans five and a half hours to drop the requested mines on the beach, which is probably cutting things close but might be possible. You will be setting up your ambush, and hopefully have it in place to meet the southbound group in what will be six and a half hours from start.

Assuming the northbound contingent stays on schedule, they should reach the same point in thirteen and a half hours, which is seven hours after you engage the southbound force. Presumably you will have finished the first combat sufficiently before that to prepare for the second.

Does this timeframe fit your understanding, or did I misunderstand something?

--M. J. Young

The timeframe fits, if the mines don't get there before the first group, that's ok, with 2 to 1 odds against, I give us good chance to survive that one pretty much unscathed. The 1K of soldiers, now those I would want the mines for, and if I could use all 2000 for them, I'd be a much happier guy.

Adam

You reverse and start heading north, sending messages while you're moving.

It's half past noon when one of your officers reports that the enemy's position is about an hour north of you; the beach is not in sight from here, and hasn't been for the past couple miles (the road moves in and out through the coastal jungle and foothills), but you've got good jungle cover.

The report is that your mines will be on the beach in three hours, and that you should have someone there to receive the drop.

I believe you were going to push over some trees and let the men set up defenses; are there any adjustments at this point?

--M. J. Young

Sounds right to me. Let's kick this pig.

Adam

O.K., you tear into setup, described thus:

  • Geneice and I with our super strength will push down trees
  • stacking them up
  • making a makeshift barrier around our area...200 by 200*, a diamond shaped, about 4 feet high
  • The troops will use the smaller trees and brush to make pungi sticks and traps in the jungle to discourage them from trying to engage us in there
  • We will also use our claymores and explosives there as well, to make sure that any end around will come up with failure....

*Feet or yards or something else?

The question is how you are prioritizing this. Are you and Geneice knocking down enough trees, and then stacking them to 4 feet here, and working around the area until you've got it that high all the way around? Are you knocking down a few trees, stacking them to a foot or two, and moving on, continuing to do a bit at a time until it's done? Are you knocking down the trees and having someone else build walls from them?

Also, it would be easy for you to knock over trees under about four inches in diameter, but bigger than that would require strength checks; how big are the trees you want, and how many do you want that size?

Are all the men setting up traps in the jungle, or are they doing different things?

Part of the concern is that you are working against a timeframe that is both limited and approximated, so there is the possibility that the job will be incomplete when the enemy arrives; I need a schema to tell me what is prioritized to finish first, and how that prioritization is being effectuated.

Orders, sir?

--M. J. Young

Geneice and I will push down trees about a foot in diameter, together, and we will use they as approximate cover. I would like to have a couple of them down in a row, interlacing. We will deal with what we can get. The soldiers will use their machettes and use their claymores and make the traps in the jungle.

We will work on the walls, they will work on the traps. At this point, even 20 trees down along the same lines 5 on each side will provide sufficent cover for now.

Adam
