In John Cross' Multiverser game thread Cross Out a New World, John, I mentioned that there was a list of four hundred ninety-seven pizza toppings, and he said he wished he could see that.

Well, I'm wondering how many we can list.

Rules of the Thread:

  1. Number your pizza toppings consecutively, so we can keep count.
  2. List only toppings you have actually seen offered on pizza; you need not have tried them.
  3. Combinations are only valid if they represent a single item. For example, "Ham" and "Pineapple" are both valid toppings, but since "Hawaiian" is just Ham and Pineapple, it does not count. On the other hand, "Ziti" is comprised of ricotta, mozzeralla, sauce, possibly meat, and macaroni, but it is a unique topping because these are combined into one thing and included as one thing.
  4. If someone duplicates a topping, the first person to notice this should post that it was duplicated and correct the count.

I think that's sufficient. I'll start the list with the obvious:

1) Extra (Mozzarella) Cheese
2) Pepperoni
3) Meatball
4) Sweet Sausage
5) Mushroom
6) Beef
7) Pork
8) Peppers
9) Anchovies
10) Tomatoes
11) Brocolli
12) Shrimp Scampi
13) Ziti
14) Bacon
15) Ham
16) Pineapple
17) Hot Peppers
18) Sweet Peppers
19) Hot Sausage
20) Crabmeat

That seems a good start to me. What else?

--M. J. Young

Already I think of some I missed:

21) Cheddar Cheese
22) Ricotta

--M. J. Young

23) Macaroni and cheese (not kidding, I've seen this)
24) roasted chicken

Are banana peppers (8), (17), (18), or (25)?

You're on 25).

26) Brie (yes, I've seen it)
27) Sun-dried tomatos
28) Black olives
29) Green olives
30) Apple slices
31) Avocado
32) Salsa
33) Pesto sauce
34) Lobster (sure, why not?)
35) Clams
36) Mussels
37) Ground beef
38) Barbecue pork (yep, seen this too)
39) Fried chicken
40) Zucchini
41) Calamari

Tristan tells me he has seen "cheeseburgers and fries pizza", which means we add:
42) french fried potatoes
43) bread
44) pickles
45) ketchup
46) lettuce
We've already covered beef, cheddar cheese, tomatoes, and onions.
He also says
47) grilled chicken, which he says is different from both fried and roasted,
And he reminds me that I've had
48) spinach.

He's going to keep thinking.

--M. J. Young

49) Salami

I've done this on pizza at home, particularly when there was no pepperoni.

--M. J. Young

50) Red onions
51) White onions
52) Feta cheese
53) Hot dogs

I didn't realize we were counting pizza we made ourselves

54) Parmesan Cheese
55) Bologna
56) Bratwurst
57) Dutch loaf (there wasn't any other meat)
58) Does Tabasco sauce count as a topping? As much as I use, it should

EDIT, Scott, you cut me, I had to change all my numbers.

Counting dessert pizzas

59) Cherry pie filling
60) icing
61) Apple pie filling
62) Chocolate sauce
63) Oreo Cookies
64) Peach pie filling

I saw a news report about a girl that was obsessed with the Ninja Turtles. She would make any pizza she saw in the cartoon. On the show, she (The girl in the show) used

65) Whipped cream

I don't recall the rest, but I think most of them were mentioned. Are we counting pizzas we've seen on TV, or just in real life?

66) Baked turkey (buddy of mine put leftover Thanksgiving turkey on a pizza. Top 3 best pieces of pizza I ever ate)

Perhaps we should establish what constitutes a topping, do different kinds of sauces count? If so, the Donatos Chicken Veggie Medley uses

67) cheese-based white sauce, instead of the standard tomato-based sauce.

68) Cream Cheese (pizza I made once)

[Internet weirdness resulting in extra post]

69. Blueberry pie filling
70. Chocolate chips

I remember I went to one fancy pizza shoppe in Atlanta during Dragoncon with J, and the pie tasted good enough, as long as you did not think of it as pizza. But I can't really remember the toppings.

I just saw a 'weird pizza' show on TV a few days ago.

They had the inventor of the BBQ chicken pizza on as well as some others.

72. BBQ sauce (in place of tomato sauce)
73. Fresh spinach leaves

74. Canadian bacon

I've bought 'four-cheese
pizza'...what's on it?

Pepperocinos in the corner of Papa John's boxes
Red pepper flakes on the table at Pizza Hut
Creamy garlic dipping sauce??????

75. Gummies
76. Pepperjack cheese (I've occasionally cheesed up a freezer pizza with additional sliced cheese).

Tad, your number 73 is a duplicate. MJ already mentioned spinach.

The other thing is that the pizza place my character called probably has 10 different kinds of sausage, 15 different kinds of pepperoni, 12 different kinds of ham, etc. So, that would make our list a bit more difficult.

cooked spinach and fresh?

Yeah, if we're counting roasted, fried, and grilled chicken as separate toppings, then 48 and 73 are both legit.

Point Made.

77. Basil
78. Garlic
79. Artichoke hearts
80. Potatos
81. Sesame seed
82. Peanut sauce
83. Eggplant
84. Chorizo sausage
85. Capicollo
86. Portobello mushroom
87. Shitake mushroom
88. salmon
89. tuna
90. wasabi
91. peas
92. corn
93. shredded cabbage (green)
94. shredded cabbage (red)
95. ginger
96. cauliflower
97. broccoli
98. mayonaise
99. tofu
100. soy cheese

I need to pick up a menu from a local pizza place that has some unusual pies (including the aforementioned Shrimp Scampi pie). I will bet that they have a few that have not yet been mentioned. However, this is not a good week for that, so keep thinking about what you've had on pizza.

--M. J. Young

101. Provolone

I looked at a four-cheese pizza today, and the one cheese missing from the list was...

102. American Cheese (I used to make pizza with Kraft singles all the time)

I'm in a rush, but just yesterday I breezed through a farm market where on the wall there was a recipe for pizza with peaches on it.

So I think I'll add

    102) Peaches.

The recipe said that you could substitute other fruit, but since a) it did not specify which other fruits were good for this and b) I have never encountered another fruit on pizza, I'm going to stick with what I can confirm--at this point.

There will be a second stage to this game, where we add to our toppings list those which might be found on pizza in a restaurant a thousand years in the future (staying within known foods), but let's finish the first stage first, identifying all the toppings we have actually encountered.

--M. J. Young

I showed the Ladyfaire this list, and she was impressed with our timewasting skills. One other timewaster, perhaps, is for us to plonk the tykes in front of the Food Channel instead of cartoons...they love it.

And you missed one....

103)Peaches

104. Hot wing sauce
105. Ranch dressing
106. Mashed potatoes (A friend of mine once tried corn and mashed potato pizza in Japan.)
107. Mango (My brother said he recently had the best pizza ever. It involved spicy chicken and mango salsa--I'll have to ask him what else was on it.)

Oh, and if using garlic as the base for the sauce is distinct from 78, then we have:

108. Garlic sauce. (My husband has made a very tasty white pizza where the sauce was roasted garlic and olive oil.)

Looks like garlic sauce should actually be 107, as peaches are 102 and 103.

Actually, that confused me at first, too. The point of putting "103) Peaches" was that I had put "102) Peaches" having overlooked "102) American Cheese".

So Garlic Sauce is 108.

And as we are now on Page 2 of this thread, the rules are going to expand a bit. The new rule: in the distant future, what else of foods which do exist now might make it on a list of pizza toppings?

For convenience, I am reproducing the entire list to this point:

1) Extra (Mozzarella) Cheese
2) Pepperoni
3) Meatball
4) Sweet Sausage
5) Mushroom
6) Beef
7) Pork

107. Hot wing sauce
108. Ranch dressing
109. Mashed potatoes
110. Mango
111. Garlic sauce

It appears that a couple of them were not numbered, so the numbering has been corrected.

At this point, I want people to list other toppings you might never have seen but think you would eat if they were offered. That at least keeps it somewhat honest. I can imagine putting things on a pizza that I could not imagine eating on a pizza, but my list would be different from yours (I can't imagine eating anchovie pizza, but someone must eat it or it wouldn't be offered), so if you can imagine eating something on a pizza yourself, you can now add it to the list even if you've never seen it nor heard of it anywhere.

We might get our 497 toppings yet.

--M. J. Young

79. Pepperjack cheese77. Basil
105) Peaches.
106)Peaches

I think MJ goofed somewhere.

Yes, I saw that and was editing and doing twelve other things at the same time. It's been fixed.

--M. J. Young

I'm a little confused...my post didn't show up. Let's try this again.

Since we already have the makings of dessert pizzas, with things like chocolate sauce, chocolate chips, and various flavors of pie filling, how about:

112. marshmallow
113. white chocolate chips
114. butterscotch topping
115. caramel
116. brown sugar
117. bananas
118. strawberries
119. blueberries
120. blackberries
121. whipped cream
122. ice cream

And, since we have a lot of seafood on the list, how about:

123. scallops
124. salmon
125. tuna
126. tilapia
127. mahi mahi

And what about other types of meat?

128. lamb
129. venison
130. steak

I considered sushi on pizza, but wrote that off as too weird, unless you're a ninja turtle, but

131. shrimp tempura
132. vegetable tempura

has definite possibilities.

And yes, I'd eat everything on this list...though not on the same pizza! I wouldn't even eat all the dessert toppings on the same pizza, I don't think

Whipped Cream is a duplicate (number 65) and some of the others are duplicates too. Might want to check the list again.

Just ate at Snappy's Pizza in my hometown, and saw Ranch Dressing, BBQ Sauce, and Meatballs. The first two are already gotten on the first list, and the third I'm not sure.

Meatball is #3; Ranch Dressing is 108; Barbecue Sauce is 72.

We can distinguish "blueberries" from "blueberry pie filling", so that counts.

As mentioned, Whipped Cream was #65 (on the corrected numbering).

Salmon is #91, Tuna #92.

So the list continues thus:

    112. marshmallow
    113. white chocolate chips
    114. butterscotch topping
    115. caramel
    116. brown sugar
    117. bananas
    118. strawberries
    119. blueberries
    120. blackberries
    121. ice cream
    122. scallops
    123. tilapia
    124. mahi mahi
    125. lamb
    126. venison
    127. steak
    128. shrimp tempura
    129. vegetable tempuraThat's progress, and some of them sound tempting.

In fact, the mention of brown sugar immediately caused me to consider

    130) Cinnamon
    131) Ginger
    132) Nutmeg (in small quantities, of course).

    --M. J. Young

And what about

    133) Mashed Pumpkin
which goes well with the above toppings.

--M. J. Young

134. Peanut butter

Yes, I could see my kids eating a PB and J pizza.

135. Grape Jelly
136. Strawberry Jelly
137. Spaghetti Sauce (I may have used this on a homemade).

I'm not sure if this counts but differing crust flours count for me: Whole Wheat, Masa (corn meal), Potato flour, and Arrowroot flour. I'm allergic to gluten (aka wheat flour) so I'd be quite happy to find a reasonably priced pure corn meal pizza. One problem with things that are often labelled as corn meal is they often have wheat flour in them as well.

You know, if we've got tempura and wasabi, we really need

138. soy sauce

And if we're doing a cheeseburger pizza, why not

139. onion rings (distinct from 50 and 51 in that they're breaded and fried first)

And because I apparently have dessert on the brain:

140. M&Ms
141. Reese's pieces
142. crushed Oreos
143. chocolate sprinkles
144. multicolored sprinkles
145. peanuts
146. almonds
147. walnuts

To go with the PB&J that Tadeusz posted:
148. marshmallow fluff (really doesn't taste the same as just marshmallows, so I'd say it's a separate topping.)

Pickles and bananas are already on there, as are apple slices, so I've got nothing else to pair with peanut butter.

Slightly more "normal," how about

149. scallions
150. shallots
(We use onions, so why not?)

And my husband suggests:

151. General Tso's Chicken (As if the fact that he married me wasn't proof enough that he's a little warped. Odd as it sounds, though, I would actually be tempted to try that.)
