Ya know what? What's Sarah been doing to disguise herself? I watched The A-Team on DVD not all that long ago, and Hannibal could make himself look like ANYONE!!! (Excited) It wouldn't fool a Terminator, but makeup skills could be helpful to learn. What about faking the look and effect of injuries? Go to a house with a "badly lacerated leg" which is completely fine. That could only be useful.
Oh ya know what else? I could wake up at any time. Maybe that's the failed roll.
NOTES:
"The tench coat you found stops bullets Mommy. The red cape is stealth technology. Only I can use it. I will become invisible if you wrap me in it. Shoot a gun at the trench coat mommy. Wrap me in the red cape. You'll see this is real. I sent them to you to help you protect me Mommy."
I still owned 8 bulletproof shirts, even though they were never mentioned again. I wonder if those came through. Could Miles Dyson reverse engineer that? I'd prefer not to cut a piece off the trench coat (if we can cut it at all!!) but we will see. Can he reverse engineer the laser pistols? I want Miles Dyson working for us. Miles Dyson started it in 1997. The second company started it in 2007. Get Miles Dyson to release his in 2006. Then we have control over it, and a 9 year delay. "JUDGMENT DAY IS INEVITABLE!!!" (Must be read like Arnold for full effect) Put a capacitator with an ounce of C-4 on the motherboard of that mother-something-or-other, set to detonate in 2035. We win no matter what.
Don't forget the three man shotgun story.

I conclude that you do not decide to check any of the cartons for contents, but instead head down the hall directly.
In the reality, Derek received word from Lauren telepathically concerning what was out there seconds before you encountered one; in the dream, reality doesn't matter so much. Thus even though Lauren is standing there
Derek suddenly says, "Lauren says--there's one now, flying lizard."It is coming directly toward the two of you from about forty feet in front, apparently having pushed off some object somewhere but having skin flaps between its fore and aft legs reminiscent of those of a flying squirrel. The head is about six inches across, with the jaw open rather viciously and claws on its forelegs visible. It might be eight feet long, but thin like a snake or salamander, and powerfully muscled from what you can see. You are shooting at it head-on, which makes it a relatively small target.
It occurs to me that I don't think you've ever seen Lauren use the staff which she was holding when you last saw her on the ship, and you never saw CW use any weapon, although you did recognize that he had a ten-gauge shotgun over his back. What are you expecting them to use as weapons? Or are you expecting that you and Derek will do all the fighting?

I know about the other Lauren Hastings. That staff is probably some kind of psionic weapon. Maybe Lauren talked about it. I know she's got big pistols. I know what a shotgun can do. It's a dream, surprise me. If the staff creates raw meat to distract the things, I'd not be surprised.

For all I know, Lauren's staff throws 10 penny nails at Mach 5. For all I know, CW's shotgun isn't a shotgun, but fires green slime that dissolves living tissue. (And let's hope he's already given us the antidote....) Surprise me. The only weapons that have to do what they're supposed to are the weapons I saw in use. It's a dream. It doesn't have to make sense. Let's have some fun with it, shall we?
(Doing Therapy)
Everyone else is getting into position to attack--CW pulling his shotgun off his back, Lauren steadying herself in the air and pointing her staff that direction, Derek trying to brace himself against a wall. What are you doing?

MJ, I do ask one thing. I don't know what the weapons are, or what other types of enemies there are. I do ask that you make it realistic, to the point that, Lauren's staff, whatever it does, is just as effective as it would have been. CW's shotgun, even if it shoots balls of whipped cream, it's just as effective as it would have been. The enemies, no matter what form they take, are exactly as tough. Realistic to the original, but certainly not accurate to it. Can you do me that favor? I did kind of design this skill to do this scenario specifically. I wanted to see if we would have made it.
So I guess make it exactly the same, but totally different.
(Doing Therapy)
I guess what you haven't told me is whether you are actually going to shoot at the thing. I figure these are the possibilities:
- You are shooting immediately;
- You are waiting for it to reach a particular point--perhaps a distance, perhaps for it to do something else (open its mouth, maybe?);
- You are waiting for someone else to shoot first;
- You are waiting for everyone else to shoot first.
--M. J. Young
I guess what you haven't told me is whether you are actually going to shoot at the thing. I figure these are the possibilities:
At first I was like "What thing?" I had to reread that post. The text was blockquoted and I didn't realize that was what was happening. I thought you were just quoting it to me.
"SHOOT IT!!! A LOT!!!!!!!!!"
That's an order to the group and an action. Infinite ammo cheat codes do come in handy at times like these. That means no one loses an attack to needing to reload, and you don't have to keep track of ammo. Should make refereeing it a cinch. Are we clear on the 2D+5 GE roll? I just didn't have any better way to explain to you "Average Luck" than to use game mechanics. My character can think in terms like that.
Here's one for you. Suppose I get two new uses on the 9mm carbine in the dream world. Do I keep those in the dream world? At least until the end of the particular dream. I'm cool with going back to my real skill for a new dream, but in the dream, if I raise my skill through a new use, I want it to count in the dream world. I'm about to get the zero g new use (Or do I already have it?) At least for that dream, if I get a new use, I get a 2@1 SAL for the remainder of the dream. Can we do that?
Just so you know, my next dream simulation is going to be Pearl Harbor. Now that I better understand how this skill works, it's going into practice mode until I can actually use it to some advantage. Just to clarify though, in the dream world, I can have any weapons I want. Let's see those MPs go up against a guy with fully auto rifles, explosive shotguns shells, grenade launchers and an infinite ammo cheat code....
(Doing Therapy)
I'm perfectly clear on the GE rolls. You have no guarantee that this won't turn into a nightmare or, conversely, a fantasy. Your control of the dream cannot be total and allow you the benefits you seek. Are we clear on the 2D+5 GE roll? I just didn't have any better way to explain to you "Average Luck" than to use game mechanics.
You don't get new use bonuses in the dream world.Suppose I get two new uses on the 9mm carbine in the dream world. Do I keep those in the dream world?
Think about it: new use means you suddenly thought of trying something you've never thought to try before, and in attempting it you discover something about the skill you didn't know. In the dream world, if you suddenly thought to curve the path of the bullets such that each bullet flew full force through the bodies of a dozen opponents, or the grenade launcher could fire ten grenades simultaneously at ten different targets, it very well might work in the dream, and dream logic being what it is it would make perfect sense to you as the dreamer that that would work, but you would not actually have learned anything about the weapons. So "new use" can't be gained from a new use in a dream.
You pull the trigger, adrift in the weightless world moved by the force of your mind as you are, and the kick of the gun causes you to spin backwards and sends your shot wild. You hear the boom of CW's shotgun and see the flash of Derek's laser, but for the moment you'll need to stabilize before you know what's happening.
--M. J. Young
Concerning the New Uses, I never even thought of it like that. I was seeking realistic new uses that I could attempt in real life. That's too bad. The 2@1 which I really got in the game might have made the difference between winning and losing. Of course, so might the infinite ammo cheat code.....
You pull the trigger, adrift in the weightless world moved by the force of your mind as you are, and the kick of the gun causes you to spin backwards and sends your shot wild.
I was expecting that to be a botch, not a failure. Is there anything to which I could throw my grappling hook? If not, or if I fail that, fire a shot back in the other direction. I'm spinning, to stabilize, fire in the other direction. I'd just be upside down in a weightless environment. No big deal. Then, throw the grappling hook to Lauren. They will have killed it by then, I'm sure.

Speaking of those laser pistols, what do they look like? I guess what I mean is, do they look enough like child's toys that I could get away with openly carrying one in the body of a 10 year old? If everyone thinks it's a toy, that wouldn't be a problem. I've been redoing the VSP, since it will be a while before I can openly carry a firearm.
(Doing Therapy)
Sorry--the backspin is not so serious that you can't shoot again; it simply means that you had nothing bracing you against the kick of the gun (you've never fired it in flight) and so you were shifted. You are still flying and can still compensate for your drift and fire again; it was just a way of explaining the miss.
There are undoubtedly several ways you could brace yourself for another shot; are you going to use the grappling hook anyway?
--M. J. Young
(OOC) Make sure you check Behind the Screens, prior to your game post there. I'm not trying to fight with you, I never was. I'm trying to understand how this skill works. It's a dream. Of Course I have an infinite ammo cheat code. I didn't realize that wouldn't work for training. So, I don't have an infinite ammo cheat code. You're going to have to break this skill down and explain it in its entirety. I'm not at all clear on what this thing does. It almost seems as though you're making it up as you go along. How am I supposed to understand what it does if you don't even fully understand it? All of my companions have an infinite ammo cheat code though. For all I know, they DID have infinite ammo. Tell you what, I'll meet you halfway. I do have an infinite ammo cheat code. I can't run out of magazines. I still have 15 and 30 round magazines that need to be changed, but I have an infinite number of them. (How can I train changing magazines in a dream if I run out?) I have an infinite number of shotgun shells. The gun must be reloaded between shots, but I have an infinite number of shells to do it with. I only keep track of the bullets in each magazine, not the number of magazines. I have a pouch from which I can draw a 357 speed-loader of 6 bullets as many times as I need to. Cool?
That would still make the MP battle more fun. I'd have a shotgun loaded with 8 shredder shells, and a belt of 8 shredder shells that would refill every time it was emptied. Still practicing loading the gun.
(BIC) So, I had a 15 round clip, down by three. Take my next shot. Try to shoot it in a way which will stabilize me. Use the recoil to steer myself. Probably a new use, which sucks, cuz when will be my next chance to do this in zero g? What's everyone else doing?

Ya know what? I just realized. This scenario is a lesson in involvement without the "trap" (Which I hope to nullify) Those humans at the gas station were staying out of it. One of them said something like "We don't bother the machines, and they don't bother us." Uh, sorry to break it to you, but it doesn't work that way with these creatures. Ya know what? All of a sudden, this whole redoing the old mission seems kind of stupid. I don't need to know what would have happened. Besides, we can't really even agree on the details. I succeeded in destroying the ship. I'll tell Lauren next time I see her. That's good enough. Put it down that I learned and am now practicing this skill. We can work out the bugs as we go along. I'd rather get back to the main story, if that's OK with you, that is.
Can I teach myself a spell whilst dreaming to be activated upon awakening?
(Doing Therapy)
O.K., so we'll put down that you learned how to recreate a scenario in a semi-lucid dream in which you have the ability to practice skills, and you'll awaken back in the real world. Is that right?
--M. J. Young
and you'll awaken back in the real world. Is that right?
Not just yet. It's a dream. I have control over it. All of the people have just faded away. The bad guys have faded. The ship has faded. I am now kneeling at the alter of the church I used to go to, and I'm praying.
"God, I need someone to come and train and protect Sarah. Someone who will take her mind off of all of the strange things I've been causing. A trainer, friend and protector for Sarah. Can you bring that to me"
Must be done in the dream, to be activated when I wake up. Pray for 20 minutes. I've got an hour of lucid dreaming, should be enough time. After that, let the dream fade, sleep for the remainder of the time, and awaken to whatever Sarah has in mind. I'm not picky if the summoned person is a verser, an indig, or whatever. As long as it ISN'T a time traveler. If this summons Lauren Hastings, or if it summons Kyle Reese's great uncle, whatever. I'm not picky. Just someone to train Sarah and take her mind off of the problems.
I was thinking about bringing Lauren into this anyway. God is bouncing her around to battle disasters? What's a greater disaster than the deaths of three billion people?
I told you you could combine psionics and magic......
You fail to alter the dream.
--M. J. Young
Well then consider the psionic dreaming to be in practice mode for now. By the time I can do what I'm dreaming about, I should have a 2@ SAL in that. I've been practicing what psionic skills I could. Do I have any skill increases in that?
As soon as I wake up, Sarah will feed me and change my diaper. That bottle is the first of the 30 bottles for trying to the speaking spell again.
Can we skip ahead a week until bottle 30? I'll look it up again if you ask nicely.
(Doing Therapy)
Sarah has acquired a "baby book" which apparently tells her what you should be able to do and what kind of games to play with you to help you develop.
You notice that your hands are becoming a bit more coordinated--you can pick up smaller objects by raking the surface with your fingertips, and you can hand an object from one hand to the other.
Sarah tosses a towel over your face and, in that sing-song voice she uses when she talks to you, says "Where's John?"
--M. J. Young
Well, can we do the thirty bottle spell?
Sarah tosses a towel over your face and, in that sing-song voice she uses when she talks to you, says "Where's John?"
I'm gonna be a baby. Laugh a lot. Only cry when I need changed or fed. I'm gonna be the best behaved baby ever.
Next chance I get, pray for an hour for someone to come to train Sarah.

Pray for an hour. That's silent and/or baby babble. Regardless of whatever else is happening, I'm praying. No ritual, just an hour of praying whilst the day goes by.
Just out of curiosity, could it be Lauren? God is bouncing her around to fight disasters. Three billion deaths sounds like a disaster worthy of that. She could train Sarah in martial arts and weapons. Even if Lauren is only a 1@10, that's still better than Sarah. I'd have an easier time communicating with Lauren. She would be a good friend for Sarah to have. Just a thought.
(Doing Therapy)
Concerning the baby bottle component, I've decided that meals you would have to eat anyway cannot be a material component of a spell. It would work if you chose to pour those bottles on the floor and not eat (thus fasting), and I could consider whether it would work if you were forcing yourself to consume the liquid separately from your normal food, but as I note behind the screens, it's too close to making the air you breathe a material component of a spell. You can't not eat in your present situation; you can't use what you eat as a material component.
And you can't get credit for dumping a bottle if you then consume a bottle made to replace it. These are things outside your control.
--M. J. Young
You allowed it before when the spell failed, so now you're going back on your word. If you allowed it before, you should allow it now. I hate hypocrites. You allowed it before, so you can't back out on that now. What if the spell had succeeded before? Would you now tell me that the spell I have on my sheet is no good? Would you tell me that the magic I did before actually didn't work? You allowed it before, you have to allow it now.
I don't have to allow what I didn't want to allow before. I've rethought it and decided that you can't do what you have to do anyway and say it's magic ritual. If you did, then every time you did the ordinary thing it would be the magic thing. That's obviously absurd; it's not going to be the case that every time you drink from a bottle it's going to make you expect magical outcomes. Therefore, since the point of magic ritual is to increase your expectation because it is different and points to the performance of a magical outcome, if what you're doing isn't different it can't increase your expectation and has no value as ritual.
--M. J. Young
I don't have to allow what I didn't want to allow before.
Whether you wanted to or not, fact remains, you did, and now you're going back on your word. If you didn't want to allow it before, you shouldn't have allowed it before. Plain and simple. No matter how you spin it, you are still going back on your word. A man's word means everything.
Next chance I get, pray for an hour for someone to come to train Sarah.
"God, I need someone to come and train and protect Sarah. Someone who will take her mind off of all of the strange things I've been causing. A trainer, friend and protector for Sarah. Can you bring that to me"

Let's clarify the difference between what happened behind the screens and what happened in the game. Behind the screens I considered the use of formula as a material component, and I didn't like it but couldn't think why; it was creative and original, but also problematic. It wasn't only that you were stretching out the casting time over several days by using your regularly scheduled feedings as ritual, but I couldn't put my finger on what it was.
When I rolled, the spell you were attempting didn't work. That means that any credit you might have gotten for the formula as a material component did not result in the spell working. That further means that your character, who is not at all privy to any statement made behind the screens, does not know that formula helped him succeed in casting a spell--in fact, what he knows is that when he attempted to use formula as a material component he failed to learn the spell, and therefore formula did not make the spell work.
I certainly agree that if you were given a specific credit for a specific component in a spell you learned that is at least an argument favoring getting the same credit for the same component in another spell--that's not to say that it's conclusive, but it is contributory. However, any discussion of what any component might have been worth in any spell that never worked is not binding as precedent, but only dicta, something said in the process of rendering a decision that was considered but has no force. The formula question was not resolved. For all either of us knows, it may be that the dice didn't let the spell work because God knew that drinking formula was not a legitimate material component for a spell cast by a baby.
If I understand correctly, you want to summon a teacher for Sarah, and you want the summoning to call someone either from the present world or from off-world. Is that correct?
--M. J. Young
Given my current physical limitations and the fact that I really have no direct access to formula, but am at the mercy of Sarah to provide it, that looked to me like a huge limitation on my spell. I mean, what if Sarah all of a sudden stops feeding me formula? Bad dice roll, it could happen. Also, it is a practical food item with a long shelf life which I could use to augment the VSP. It's not worth fighting over.
If I understand correctly, you want to summon a teacher for Sarah, and you want the summoning to call someone either from the present world or from off-world. Is that correct?
That's correct. If we could get Lauren Hastings, that would be perfect. God is bouncing her around to fight disasters? Well, I've got a doozy of a disaster waiting for her here. If not Lauren, that's fine. I'm not picky who they are.
Two
Ya know what MJ? Would it be OK with you if we kept the formula as a spell component if there was an added risk that Sarah would stop feeding me formula? Given our current situation, I could easily imagine that happening on a bad dice roll. I can't get it on my own. If Sarah can't get it (which is quite possible) then it is certainly a limitation. Cool?
(Doing Therapy)
While you're praying Sarah changes your diaper, puts you in a clean outfit, and plays with your hands and feet. She seems disturbed that you don't seem to be paying attention to her.
You lose your focus, and don't manage to pray for the full hour.
--M. J. Young
What about adding the risk of Sarah losing access to formula, and keeping it as a spell? Yes, it's part of my life, but I can't get it on my own. There's a good chance Sarah might not be able to either. (asking nicely) Come on, work with me here!!!!
Ya know what? I accept that my character is no longer psychotic. However, I will not accept that he has less than a 3@10 example at faking a psychotic episode. He isn't psychotic. He can't fake an actual episode. It would be impossible. There's things which happen which are autonomic that couldn't be faked. (Accelerated brain activity, accelerated heartbeat, etc.) Having an actual psychotic episode is a skill at which you either have 3@10 or no skill at all. (And thank God for the rare occasion when you actually fail the skill roll......) However, at least the more obvious symptoms could be faked. There seems a good chance that Sarah might wind up in an institution, what better way to get to see her than to fake it sufficiently to get put into the institution? So, Sarah gets thrown in when I'm 12 years old (or whenever) I fake a psychotic episode at the mall, get sedated by paramedics, and end up in the loony bin with Sarah. In the loony bin, I have clicks and pops and white noise, and sound like a broken record. (These are the more obvious symptoms of day-to-day psychosis.) I could fake at least the more obvious symptoms of it. Under close scrutiny, perhaps they could tell I was faking, but for the minute, I've got a chance to save Sarah. I'd like to try to teach myself this skill. To Sarah, a full-blown episode would just sound like louder than normal baby babble. Day-to-day psychosis would sound pretty much the way I do now. It's sounds like a skill at acting. I could imagine that I'd forget and stop acting from time to time, and that could be problematic. I would hope I'd get an automatic 1@3 just based on the example, but I'd settle for a 3@10 example bonus at learning the skill. Thoughts?
So, in a nutshell, a skill at faking the more obvious symptoms of psychosis, with a 3@10 example bonus.
Try that prayer again tomorrow.

Just thinking back on that TerraNova spaceship scenario. How is that in the rules for the scenario? Is it only used if the player summons Lauren Hastings? Is it even in that, or is it a part of Lauren's character? I'm just wondering because I am now wondering what I would have done if you had pulled that on me by myself. You tell me, and I am one of the few who know, that there is a spaceship on a collision course with the station. Make it such that I could potentially beat it alone. How does the player react? That would have been a good non-involvement test. That scenario, set up so that I am the only one who knows about it, and, for some reason, am the only one who can stop it. Honestly, I think I would have let it hit the station if I had been on my own. That would have happened whether I was there or not. I'll make it through. They're in God's hands now. I probably would have found a window directly in line with the impact, bought a box of popcorn and a lawn chair, and sat right in the path of the thing and watched the show. I would just have all of my gear sitting next to me, not just the VSP.
Truth be told, I almost did that anyway. The reason I went on the mission was because I know that my character had developed a sense of loyalty to Lauren. I had to go for her.
(Doing Therapy)
Strange posts.
Who is the expert at faking psychotic episodes whom your character was able to observe closely? However, I will not accept that he has less than a 3@10 example at faking a psychotic episode.
I've seen Basil Rathbone fake fencing with Errol Flynn in a couple movies (Robin Hood, Captain Blood). I could probably cite his skill at faking a sword fight. I've seen the real thing, too. The real thing is different, and I'm not sure I could fake swordfight from having seen the real thing. I'm also not sure that being able to fence gives you skill at faking being able to fence. I vaguely recall some story in which there was difficulty with "pulling punches", that a fake fight became real all too quickly because the real fighters got pulled into it.
Having an actual psychotic episode is a skill at which you either have 3@10 or no skill at all.
Having a psychotic episode is not a skill. It's a disease process. You might as well claim skill at epilepsy or influenza. It's something that happens to you, not something you do. Whatever you do is a skill; if you don't do it, it's not a skill.
I fake a psychotic episode at the mall, get sedated by paramedics, and end up in the loony bin with Sarah.
Sounds like a plan. Two flaws strike me. One is that they keep the criminally insane separate from the ordinarily insane; the other is that they keep the juvenile treatment facilities separate from the adult facilities. At least, that's the way it's always appeared in the places I've seen, and I've seen a few.
That scenario, set up so that I am the only one who knows about it, and, for some reason, am the only one who can stop it.
Well--isn't that The Dancing Princess? The world will be destroyed if you don't stop the demons?
I've run TerraNova for several players, never using that spaceship, never bringing in Derek or Lauren or anyone else. You keep complicating your game worlds by trying to bring in characters who are not part of the design, and that means I redesign to incorporate the characters. That's fine; it's part of play, and it happens. But it's also problematic for me and for you. Your character is supposed to be the decision-maker in your games, or else he's supposed to interact with other player characters who contribute to the decision-making process. People like Lauren and the Architect are themselves independent decision-makers in their stories. In specific circumstances they'll yield to someone else's leadership, but that creates an awkwardness for me because they're out of character at that point. I need to configure the world such that you are the only person making the decisions about your actions. If not, I'm telling the story and you're listening to it.
That collision came into that world because Lauren did, and for two reasons. One was that I would never bring Lauren into a world where there wasn't something that required Lauren to be there. The other was that I knew that as long as I had a dynamic leader non-player character in your world able to teach you skills, you would ignore creating any story and just follow the leader and learn the skills. I don't mind worlds in which you can learn skills, but TerraNova is supposed to be a technology world with only minor interest in other bias areas, and you ignored everything that was good about that world and tried to focus on stuff that was not part of the model. Bringing Lauren in meant I had to set up a way to get Lauren out, and that's what that scenario was all about.
--M. J. Young
Tomorrow repeat the prayer to summon a teacher trainer protector friend type person for Sarah.

Just to be clear, I never was arguing or complaining about how the TerraNova scenario ran. I was just trying to learn from it. I got everything out of that scenario that I had hoped for. Augmented gear, and the Psionic healing and Psionic force shield. I got everything I wanted out of it.

Again your prayer is interrupted before the hour is completed, this time with a bottle being stuffed in your mouth.
--M. J. Young
Try again tomorrow. Can't you just roll until I make it? Each roll is on the following day. That's the change in circumstance.
So what do you think of the Terminator protector verser? Perhaps it came from a world where SkyNet was a benevolent caretaker of the human race. When it learned (From a verser) that there were evil versions of itself, it sent Terminator soldiers into the Multiverse to try to wipe them out. Yeah, why not? Let's just hope that it can explain the time travel theory to me.
Yeah, think about it. Duplicity in the Multiverse. The evil SkyNet sent Terminators through time to destroy the human race, the "Good" version would send Terminators into the Multiverse to protect those humans. Duplicity in the Multiverse.
In fact MJ, I am changing the prayer to be just that. Instead of unspecified, I am praying for a sentient, off-world protector trainer Terminator verser. It's from this universe's exact opposite world. (That's not part of the prayer though.) Duplicity in the Multiverse. It can't look like Arnold. Ya know that scene in T2 where Sarah sees Arnold for the first time in the mental hospital? She slips and then runs away? It's like 30 seconds in the movie. In the book, that was 3 pages describing her reaction and what was going through her mind. The movie really doesn't do her hatred justice. Sarah can't know right away that it's a Terminator, so it can't look like Arnold. It would Scriff sense me, perhaps postulate that I am Zygoted. That would be cool. Can we do that? And since it's this world's exact opposite, it looks like Summer Glau. Hey!!!!!!!
Did you ever see the Sergeant Candy special feature on the T3 DVD? Maybe it's T2. It shows why the first T-800 models look like Arnold.
