"Ya know, I bet you could blast that lock off with your shotgun. Why don't you do that? I highly doubt you're gonna hurt that tank behind it."

And while you're at it, you can explain to me the game mechanics of using a shotgun

I'll blast the lock off the door with the shotgun.

§

Heavy hand-carried explosive-driven slug throwers (ie shotguns and guns with a higher calibur than .45) are a T6@4 skill to design and build and that is where they are briefly explained in the Big Book. I would say they generally have a shorter range but a higher base damage category than a small hand-carried explosive-driven slug thrower; if you wanted to try to make it even better at short range and worse from further, you could also give it a dc bonus at point blank and a dc penalty at long, 2dc penalty at extreme; I would probably judge somewhat based on what was in the shells. How you handle it is up to you in the end.

101% chance of success, rolled 80, 1@3 use shotgun 16 intensities of damage done to the lock.

You step back, you rack a round into the camber, and pull the trigger. The lock explodes in a shower of twisted scrap metal. The door swings open. It's a hangar. Armored cars and tanks and jeeps and rigs of every size. All of the guns you could ask for.

I don't know about you, but I'd be a kid in a candy store right now.

You bet. I need shells for my shotgun and an automatic rifle, I'd prefer the more accurate AR-15 over the more reliable AK-47, personally, and ammunition for that. The jeeps I am more interested in, how have they withstood the test of time? If not so well, I'll be trying to figure out how the tank starts and loading it with ammunition; we can probably save most of our shells and bullets and use the gunpowder and materials from the ammunition that we don't use to reuse our bullets, slowing down the rate at which we lose them.

The jeeps I am more interested in, how have they withstood the test of time?

GE 18

The jeeps are in good condition. The tires are flat, but they could be replaced. There's a selection of plump, inflated tires not far away.

In another corner, you find a rack of M-16 rifles, Colt 45 pistols, boxes marked LAW rockets, landmines, grenades, tear gas, and about a zillion rounds of ammo.

Change the tires, if I can find the equipment to do so.

Ah, no AKs or ARs, huh? Alrighty, we'll take a box of both of the guns and plenty of ammo; I don't see that we'll be needed explosives.

Change the tires, if I can find the equipment to do so.

You do. (Should I roll for that?)

Ah, no AKs or ARs, huh? Alrighty, we'll take a box of both of the guns and plenty of ammo; I don't see that we'll be needed explosives.

You don't know the difference between an M-16 and an AR-15? The difference is that the M-16 has a selector switch. It will fire, semi-auto, triburt, and full auto. The AR-15 has no selector switch, and is semi-auto only. In other words, quit complaining. You've got something better than you wanted.

In your own excitment, you failed to notice your partner. He's giddy as a schoolboy.

"We don't need explosives, you say? We might not *need* them, but we're damn sure going to take them!!!! Carnage, mayhem, destruction, here we come!!!!"

It's like he's unleashed something.

Haha, pardon me. After a little ooc research, my character's reaction would be a thought of "why are these AR-15s in a box that says M16s are inside it?" (Apparently, according to Wikipedia's sections both on M16s and AR-15s, M16s are AR-15s used by the US military; for some reason, I had thought that M16s were single fire - semi-auto, but not full auto, and had a considerably different idea of what they looked like)

No need to roll, really; I've changed tires before, and it's not like I'm time limited.

Ahh... "Um, ok... just don't blow anything up that we need, ok?"

Ahh... "Um, ok... just don't blow anything up that we need, ok?"

"You still don't get it, do you? We have the WHOLE WORLD to ourselves!!!!!! If we reduce this whole city to rubble, we just move on to the next city and do it all over again!!!!!!! I'm gonna put a couple of those LAW rockets into the side of a skyscraper!!! You want to join me????"

He's a little too excited.

So, tell me everything you're taking.

One jeep, one box of M-16 assault rifles, one box of Colt .45s, and ammo for the guns.

And whatever he wants...

One jeep, 4 M-16s, 4 45s, and a few thousand rounds each, it is.

"You take that jeep. I'm gonna see if I can get this tank started!! I'm gonna drive it through the police station!!!! I'll teach them to give me a parking ticket! Man, I can't believe I never did this before!! Fun times are ahead."

And if you wouldn't mind explaining to me how the mechanics work for him figuring out how to drive the tank, I'd appreciate it.

Well, it probably isn't much different than figuring out how to operate a car; it's likely a similar bias.

I think, though, that using the massive turret on top is a 6@4 skill under a heavy artillery heading.

He gets in the tank and tries to start it. The battery is dead.

"Doesn't that just frost it?"

He settles for another jeep. He takes several crates of LAW rockets and other explosives, as well as more than enough guns and ammo.

"You've got a warehouse full of military hardware, and all you take are a couple of rifles and pistols? What kind of a verser are you?"

Starting his jeep, he screams "LET'S BLOW THE $#!+ OUTTA SOMETHING!!!!!!!" and speeds away.

(Doing Therapy)

I consider what he said for a moment, then think that all that destruction isn't really all that fun. I start my own jeep to make sure it's running, then shut it off again and grab one of the M16s and mess around with it; if there are directions in the box, I'll read them and assemble/disassemble/assemble the weapon, and load it, make sure the safety is off, fire a shot out the window, and then continue searching the complex.

You find the directions in the box. Would shooting it be a skill learning roll? I'm pretty sure your chance of success wold be over 100%, so I might just roll to see how well you learned it.

After about 20 minutes, the guy comes back.

"What are you doing man? Versers are immortal. We got all the time in the world, let's come back here later. Now's the time to PAAAARTAAAY!!!!!!! I can't believe I never did this before!!!!!!"

You get the distinct feeling that this guy isn't playing with a full deck. Of course, he HAS been alone for 20 years. Your arrival seems to have unleashed something in him. Not dark, not sinister, not even really dangerous. Just a trapped animal.

(Doing Therapy)

Shooting it would be a skill learning roll, yeah. I have a 1@1 SAL at writing in various computer code languages, so that's a bias of 111 vs a -64 for the gun comes to 47 base, with my probably 21 bra comes to 68, with the world bias level (not doubled) which probably at least supports the guns, so if it's only level 6 that brings it to 74, if it's 11 that's 79, example of probably at least professional, so barring any negative sitmods it looks like rolling isn't necessary, if you concur with my assessment.

§

"Dude, there's stuff here I still want. If I'm going to be living forever, I'll at least want a bulletproof vest."

Roll 96 1@3 use M-16. All biases are 15@10, just because the ref is lazy. Your partner won't ever do psionics again, so he won't show you anything, and he doesn't know any magic.

"Dude, there's stuff here I still want. If I'm going to be living forever, I'll at least want a bulletproof vest."

"Dude, what for? There's nobody here to shoot at you. You're right though. What am I thinking settling for a jeep full of trinkets? There's a couple deuce and a half trucks over there in the other lot. I been waiting 20 years to have some fun. What's another day? Let's clean this place out!!!!!!!!"

(Doing Therapy)

"Just because I'm not getting shot at here doesn't mean I won't get shot at eventually."

We'll try to find a way in to another part of the compound; I'm looting the place, trying to find specifically, in order of most wanted to less but still wanted,

fatigues
kevlar equipment for various body parts
some sort of head protection
a flamethrower
a sharp martial weapon
a blunt martial weapon
a taser

Obviously, other items, such as grenade launchers or chemical weapons, are always welcome.

GE 19

After further searching the complex, you find fatigues, several Kevlar vests, helmets, Kabar knives, Asp collapsible batons, flamethrowers, grenade launchers, LAW rockets, no chemical weapons, no really major artillery. There's tanks of course, but that's about the baddest thing here. This seems to be a supply base for foot soldiers. If a soldier can carry it, it's here.

You spend the day searching with your partner. You've got 2 trucks loaded. You also find cases and cases of MREs.

With a happy/evil grin, your partner says "Tee hee hee, let's head back to my place and sack out. We'll burn the town down tomorrow."

"Sounds good to me."

A helmet, vest, knife, baton, flamethrower, and 4 fatigues in my size I am claiming as clearly without a doubt mine. I'll change into them in the morning before we go tossing grenades under cars.

Keep track of that. I'm not terribly good with that.

You've also go a lot of other stuff you didn't put on the list. I mean, you had access to an army base free for the taking. There will be surprises in the gear from time to time.

"Ya know what? Only reason to go all the way back to my house is because of the electricity. We can crash anyplace we want to. MREs don't need to be cooked, the place will probably have candles and stuff. What do you say? Just find the closest crash pad."

(Doing Therapy)

"Well, just because humans are gone doesn't say anything for wild dogs. I'd say it'd be best to be somewhere with a good sturdy locking door; if we can find something suitable here, no problem.

bump

1 Hour time limit. I was just rereading the thread. I advise you to do so as well.

The guy stops suddenly, then says "You wanna know something crazy? I don't even know your name. I'm Quinn. Quinn Mallory. Call me Slider if you want, most other people do."

The warehouse door, they're what, wooden? Metal? What kind of lock is on the door, is it like a masterlock with a pin preventing a gate from being lifted or an electronic lock preventing a gate from being opened or just a plain... regular... old... boring lock in a wooden door requiring a key that just needs to be blasted away by a point blank shotgun blast.

This is exactly what I want Glantri to do. He hardly ever asks any questions. What's wrong with asking him to do that?

(Doing Therapy)

I did reread the thread, yes.

"Quinn Mallory? Slider? That's ironic; where I'm from there was a science fiction show called Sliders about a guy named Quinn Mallory who went from dimension to dimension, always hoping to get home.

"I preferred Quantum Leap, personally.

"Name's Ky." I'll spark up a new smoke and inhale its taint deeply.

"I'd like to stop by a supermarket at some point to pick up some food thickener; also wouldn't mind grabbing some powdered sugar and some stump remover from a home improvement store. Any idea where I can find those things, Slider?"

"I'd like to stop by a supermarket at some point to pick up some food thickener; also wouldn't mind grabbing some powdered sugar and some stump remover from a home improvement store. Any idea where I can find those things, Slider?"

Slider steps back a bit.

"Man, you wanna check out a grocery store? You should have seen this place in the weeks after the disappearances. There's a grocery store right across the street. I'll show you."

So you both go across the street to the grocery store. The glass front windows are busted out. Without going in, you see animal feces a foot deep on the floor, millions of dead insects, animals skeletons. It's a veritable waste production site.

"All the meat and fresh produce rotted and attracted insects and animals. Anything edible in there that wasn't in a can was consumed by the animals. They had a feast for a couple of months. You won't find anything in paper bags like sugar or food thickener. I wouldn't go in there if I were you."

"Quinn Mallory? Slider? That's ironic; where I'm from there was a science fiction show called Sliders about a guy named Quinn Mallory who went from dimension to dimension, always hoping to get home.

"I preferred Quantum Leap, personally.

"Oh yeah? They say everything in fiction exists somewhere. So I must be The Real Quinn Mallory."

And indeed, he does bear a remarkable resemblance to Jerry O'Connell.

"So what do we blow up first?"

"Ah, I see. Alright, then, how about a home improvement store? We might also stop by a pharmacy."

I presume the foot of animal feces is all dried out because of the amount of time which has passed.

OOC) If you have the NetFlix instant watch, I would advise you to watch the show Life After People. Really good show. That's where the factual info for this world is coming from. One of the episodes is about a grocery store that was abandoned with all the food left. It turned into pretty much what I described in a matter of weeks before a biohazard team came to clean it up.

I presume the foot of animal feces is all dried out because of the amount of time which has passed.

GE 14 (I have no idea what your hopes and fears would be, so here goes)

Actually the front windows being busted out and a hole in the roof has kept it pretty moist and smelly. There are weeds and small plants growing in it in some places. The aisle in the store that had the flower seeds is overgrown with all kinds of flowers.

Slider "If we could find some biohazard suits, we'd have a great place to grow vegetables in there. Look at those flowers!!!"

"Ah, I see. Alright, then, how about a home improvement store? We might also stop by a pharmacy."

GE 19, Skill learning roll 12

Slider "I wanna blow something up first!!!"

And he takes one of the LAW rockets from the military base and points it at a car that's left sitting and fires. The rocket flies forward incredibly fast and impacts the car. There is a deafening explosion and the car erupts into a fireball.

Slider "Now that's what I call a close encounter!!"

"OK, awesome; can we go now?"

OOC) I would have thought you'd be more interested in mayhem and destruction from what little I know of your characters.

GE 17

Slider "Pharmacy is right across the parking lot. What do you want to go there for?"

It's a Walgreen's/CVS Pharmacy kind of place.

Equal parts method and madness sir.

I take a look at the retail pharmacy and know right away that it would be more of what I saw at the grocery store inside; they sell food products.

Hmm.

"Got some place like a Home Depot or Lowe's around? I'd really like to get my hands on some stump remover."

GE 18

"Got some place like a Home Depot or Lowe's around? I'd really like to get my hands on some stump remover."

Slider "What did you want to get at the pharmacy? They don't have the fresh meat and produce like the grocery store. I bet it wouldn't be quite as bad in there. And what is stump remover? The only stump remover I know of is high explosives, and we've got plenty of that."

And then he takes a hand grenade, pulls the pin and throws it in a completely random direction. It explodes in the middle of the street, leaving a nice crater in the ground.

He's been alone for 20 years. His deck consists of 2 Jokers and the Ace of Spades.

Yes, apparently.

"Well; I was hoping for isopropyl alcohol from the pharmacy, I guess. I'd really like to get some sulfur, too, the purer the better; they might have some behind the counter there if they mix the drugs on location.

"Stump remover is often made of potassium nitrate, which can be used as an efficient oxidizer. It's often available at home improvement stores.

"I'd also like to pick up a ball mill and some super glue if we can get it."

"Well; I was hoping for isopropyl alcohol from the pharmacy, I guess. I'd really like to get some sulfur, too, the purer the better; they might have some behind the counter there if they mix the drugs on location.

"Oh, you want sulfur? Why? But if you do, there's a toy store that sells chemistry sets."

"Stump remover is often made of potassium nitrate, which can be used as an efficient oxidizer. It's often available at home improvement stores.

"Ah, ya wants ta make an ANFO?!?! I gots me a better idea. How's about we go back into that there military base and find some bigger toys??? Or even better. Find a better military base. There's gots to be one with a 50 megaton nuke. Hand grenades and LAW rockets? Kid's stuff. Let's see if they got any bigger toys to play with!!"

"I'd also like to pick up a ball mill and some super glue if we can get it."

"And what the hell is a 'ball mill'? That sounds like something a prostitute would do to you if she wanted to torture you for not paying her."

You've unleashed an evil genie.

(Doing Therapy)

I shake my head. "No, but I guess we could grab some instant cold packs or lye from the pharmacy just in case we can't find the stump remover; I'm thinking black powder. It might not be as refined as modern gunpowder, but the applications are sure to help us survive after we've used everything we've got as long as the potassium and sodium nitrate lasts.

"Slider, calm down, buddy. I'm not thinking as much for here and now as I am for the future."

OOC) Seriously, what is a ball mill? Slider was asking because the ref doesn't know.

Slider says "Why are you worrying about homemade explosives? We got a whole world full of stuff to play with. What do you want to get? Nobody is here to stop us from going anywhere. We could walk straight into Pearl Harbor and get some artillery shells out of the ships for Pete's sake!!! Why worry about the homemade stuff? Better to get the professional stuff. Safer. Won't lose fingers."

And he holds up his hand with the middle finger folded back, to make it look like he lost one.

lmgtfy: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ball_mill

"I would rather know that I can make it than find out that I can't one day."

"Like my chemistry teacher said 'If you want to learn to make explosives, join the army.' If you want to do that, you're on your own. I'll stick with the ones made by professionals, thank you."

Then, after a pause.

"So where do you want to go? What do you want to do?"

I'll walk to the pharmacy and see how bad it is inside. If it doesn't look terrible I'll have a smoke and then go in.

I'm looking for

Instant cold packs, the kind you don't have to freeze, in the first aid section
Lye, with the drain cleaners
Super glue, with thr stationery
Sulfur, likely to be in the pharmacy behind the counter
A pair of really cool shades, which I'll swap my glasses out for temporarily
A top hat (sadly unlikely)

I see the old cigars and rolling papers behind the front counter presumably, which jogs an old thought. "Say, Slider. You've been here twenty, thirty years?

"Where's the pot? Don't bogart, man."

Condition of store: 15

The inside of the pharmacy is relatively clean. They didn't sell a whole lot of perishable foods, so there wasn't any real smell to attract animals. The cold case is a mess though. Animal droppings, it's been shredded. Apart from that, the rest of the store is just dusty and worn out. There are 10 aisles of various items. All of the packaged foods (chips, candy, etc) has been torn apart by rodents, but that's only 2 of the 10 aisles. The rest of the store is manageable. The front counter has the cigarettes behind it. The back has the actual pharmacy. (Healthy people get cigs up front, sick people walk all the way to the back for medicine.)

Items available GE 10

The first-aid section has a wide array of first-aid kits. Many of them have the instant cold packs. Lye is available, though the containers are badly corroded. Superglue is in the "Back To School" aisle. Going back behind the counter, you do find your sulfur. Slider starts going through the painkillers.

"Oh wee, they got Per-Co-Dan, and Vi-Co-Dan, well, the whole flipping Dan family." He gathers all of those up. "And the best part is, when they expire, they get more potent. Or so I've heard. This is gonna be fun tonight."

GE for non-essentials 8.

It seems they were having a Buster Chaplain lookalike contest somewhere in the area. There are top hats for sale, as well as sunglasses, canes, and costumes. You could make yourself quite a nice Buster Chaplain outfit.

GE for pot 22

"Man, I never touched weed. I don't know where to get it. But look!!! Here's a nice selection of cheap vodka. And some painkillers. Much better than weed, donchathink?"
