I am speechless for a moment, and then say: "Wow, Professor, you are very generous! Thank you!"

I already have a backpack, but not the tinder or any food. He would have seen my pack. Does he still have a pack brought? I have books and clothes in it, and a notebook, and some dice. Only other things I have are a staff and a wallet with some stuff in it, and the clothes on my back.

I forgot to do the other half of liinking the threads! Sorry. http://gamingoutpost.com/discussions/topic/oh-but-it-is-still-kansas-brock-begins-play

He does have a pack brought for you, yes; this pack is, well, packed. He smiles and tells you, "Generosity has very little to do with it. You're helping me, so it's the least I can do to help you."

Well then, that means I have two backpacks. Guess I'm carrying one.

I think it's time to go.

"Thanks for everything, professor. I think I'll take your advice, and head to Viridian City."

You gather your things as best you can and begin heading out from Pallet Town on the road to Viridian City.

§

(hums the gameboy theme for that route for a moment)

§

You spot a wild bird in some tall grass; its colorations are a dark brown on its back and a light brown on its bust. It has a small, pointed beak.

I pull out the Pokedex and see what info oak has gathered so far on it (Pidgey, by the sound of it). Probably found all he needs.

After the Pokedex finishes it's rhetoric, I look at Pikachu on my shoulder and ask: "You up for a scrap, Pikachu?"

If she is,I set her down, and say: "Pikachu, try a Tackle!" I suspect she will disobey, and use an electrical move, which is what i really want anyway :P.

Her response comes to your question, "Pi," as she turns her head away, clearly unwilling to do anything.

I presume that, this being the case, you're going to leave the Pidgey be and continue onwards?

That is correct. I am going to take my time coaxing Pikachu out of her shell. Onward Ho!

You continue walking towards Viridian city.

Walking along the path allows boredom to set in your mind, and soon you're letting your mind wander; you're snapped out of your thoughts when a cloud of smoke abruptly envelopes you and Pikachu.

"Prepare for trouble," a female voice says through the cloud.

"And make that double," a man's voice joins her.

"To protect the world from devastation," the female voice chimes again.

"To unite all people within our nation," the man's voice answers hers.

"To denounce the evils of truth and love," you think you can see the outline of a feminine figure with a large fish on its head through the smoke.

"To extend our reach to the stars above," a more masculine looking figure is becoming more visible in the smoke.

"Jessie," the woman says, the smoke blowing to the side to reveal a woman who uses much too much hair gel to keep her red hair in that position.

"James," the smoke blows aside revealing a blue-haired man speaking into a red rose.

"Team Rocket blasts off at the speed of light!" Jessie says excitedly.

"Surrender now, or prepare to fight." James certainly seems serious.

A bipedal, feline looking creature with a coin on its forehead jumps out of the remaining smoke between them, and says aloud, "Meowth! That's right!"

§

(There. I did it.)

I can't believe you really did it. SIGH.

"Oh, it's you idiots. I was wondering when you would show up. Hey, Pikachu, these guys intend to kidnap you and bring you to their boss, if I know their sordid reputation aright. jessie in particular, stands out in a crowd, with her bright red hair with so much gel in it the chemical fumes can knock you out from three miles away if you don't have a stuffed up nose. Team Rocket hurts pokemon for profit, so you may want to fight these guys, if not for me, then for your own preservation." I take a deep, gasping breath after this spiel. "So, really, what say we just blast them on their way unless they agree to leave now?

Jessie has a large vein on her forehead sticking out. "Hey! Don't ignore us!"

James also seems upset, but his frustration comes out as more a whine than a scream. "Idiots? How dare you talk about Team Rocket that way?!"

Meowth yells, "We're here fah all ya pokehmon, not just that one! Don't jus stand theyah, get em!"

"Ekans!" Jessie throws a pokéball.

"Koffing, go!" James's pokémon is already out, a purple looking stone with several crags in it and a white skull and crossbones beneath its smile and eyes.

You're faced with that one as well as the snakelike creature that comes from Jessie's pokéball.

"Koffing," says the one.

"Ekans," hisses the other.

Pikachu seems rooted to the spot, unsure of herself. "Cha?" she asks hesitanty.

"Pikachu, for your own protection, unleash all the lightning you can on those two, then jump into my arms and we are outta here" I shout out, then set Pikachu down (don't want to get shocked) and get ready to retrieve her as per my plan, hoping I inspired Pikachu to do as I commanded.

Aw, dude! Too bad I don't own that Gameboy Color anymore with the Pokemon Yellow, I could be walking down the road playing Pokemon Yellow with a Pikachu on my shoulder. Heh.

She snaps out of her hesitation, and unleashes a massive wave of electricity in their direction.

"Get up, you woithless bags of bones!" Meowth seems to have avoided better than the others, who are momentarily stunned by the shock.

You scoop up Pikachu and make a break for it.

As they were ahead of you on the path, you run off through the tall grass.

After a good umpteen minutes of running, you are worn out, but you don't hear anyone following you.

§

It has been brought to my attention that the original animator for Pokémon has passed away in the last few days.

R. I. P.

yes, I heard. sad state of affairs, that. :(

I stop, and while catching my breath I quickly scan the area for them, then check and make sure Pikachu is okay, and if she is, I scan the area more in depth.

You don't see them coming. The only sound is that of your breathing.

"Pikachu?" She inclines her head slightly at you, curiously, as if looking at you in a new light.

"Oh boy, those guys are annoying. I'll give them one thing, though; they are persistent. They will be back."

I find a wide open area where I can see in all directions a fair distance, like a field, then sit down and let Pikachu go. How long have we been traveling? Is it about time to eat? Regardless of the answers, I say:

"You getting hungry yet, Pikachu? I imagine you would be, after that huge blast. I don't think Oak fully realized just how much of a powerhouse he had, sitting alone in that pokeball. Or perhaps he did, and that's why he wanted to let someone else with the time train you.

"Some day, Pikachu, when we have a lot of spare time, I'll tell you the story of how I got here. Right now, though, I think it best to find a town." After we have eaten if we need to, and I have caught my breath, assuming Team Rocket does not show up, I'll pack up and get ready to return to the road. I hope I remember where it is from here.

Well, some people I know think it's about time to eat pretty much all day, and others basically eat once a day and be done with it. Either way, it's approaching evening now, so the two of you dine on some rations.

"Pikahchu," Pikachu responds to you with a nod.

Unfortunately, you've lost the path in such a complete fashion that it could only be described as admirable. Thankfully, you find the city before night completely sets in. Outside the gym, there are several people you presume to be Pokémon trainers loitering.

My deepest apologies, but I was house sitting as agreed for 10 days. I knew I would have no internet, and intended to tell you so, but I forgot to do so before I left, because he came and got me a day earlier than usual, and when I got there I found out he had no home phone either, so I had no way to contact amyone. I got 100 bucks and 10 days of food, plus cabel and video games out of it, though. Sorry about that...

I approach them. "Hey, do you guys know a place near here where a wandering trainer can stay for the evening? A hotel, perhaps?"

"Yeah," one of them tells you. "Pokémon centers provide lodging and food for travelling Pokémon trainers and their Pokémon."

You hear people complaining that the gym leader isn't here, and asking how they're supposed to get their Earth badge.

§

*blinks* uhh, thanks for letting me know, I guess?

Yes, I'm offended. I'm not going to run your game anymore because you stopped playing for a week and now my feelings are hurt.

Kidding! =P

I felt the issue was more I left without saying anything, really. I meant to, but I didn't. I had to get ready to go in half an hour because I left a night early, and he informed me at the last minute of that fact. I forgot to get/do several things before I left as a result, such as my toothbrush, one less pair of socks than I would need, and all of my internet sites I visit, including this one. I would have had someone log on for me and post a quick message, but there was no phone either, a new development that was a little annoying. Excuses, excuses, eh?

Nice sarcasm, :P

Huh. I thought pokecenters were just hospitals for Pokemon. Essentially veterinary clinics. Then again, I haven't watched too much of the show itself; I have just played the games extensively.

"Is the gym leader here missing often, or is this just a recent development?"

doublepost

You forget to get one less pair of socks than you would need? =P

They seldom actually said where the characters sleep when they're in town, so I've extrapolated.

"Well, Giovanni's a busy man," one says. "He's made a fortune dealing in rare and unusual Pokémon."

dang editing the tense of a sentence after it looked wrong afterward and missing a detail :P

"Oh, I see. Well, I better go. Pikachu and I have been out and about for awhile. We had a run in with some creeps in the woods, and the running and fighting was quite tiring."

Unless there was something else, I will head to the Pokemon center.

Was there something else? You tell me.

You arrive at the Pokémon center and meet Nurse Joy. Her Pokémon assistant tells you, "Chansey!"

"Don't worry," Joy tells you. "We'll take good care of Pikachu."

No, only if the trainers outside the gym had some response to what I said. Thought they may comment on creeps in the local area, or something, in response to the creeps in the woods comment. You never know. Anyway...

"Oh, I know you will take good care of Pikachu. You guys are professionals." I smile at her.

"So, I have a question. A pair of numbskulls calling themselves 'Team Rocket' attacked me in the woods, and tried to steal Pikachu away! Do you know anything about them? It was a man with short cropped blue hair, a woman with long red hair held by gel in the shape of a dead fish trying to eat her head, and a talking cat with a coin on his head. Pikachu gave them a really good shock and we booked it away from there."

"Team Rocket?" Joy asks with concern in her voice. "They're a bunch of bullies. They steal just about any Pokémon they can from innocent trainers, though they especially like rare or unusual Pokémon."

"I see...someone needs to stop them. If I see them again, when I am more ready, a sound drubbing should do the trick. Before then, however, Pikachu and I will need to do a lot of training. We just started out this morning, and I don't think we are near ready to take on a whole group. Of course, I don't know if Pikachu wants to help me take them down...I don't know what she wants at all, yet. Part of the fun is finding out, eh?"

Joy shakes her head sadly and tells you, "Fighting isn't ever the answer; Team Rocket is a large criminal organization. I doubt beating up a couple of their members is going to stop them.

"Your Pikachu likes you very much, though. You're a lucky trainer. Most Pokémon don't take to their trainers that well."

"How large of an organization are we talking here? Hopefully not worldwide!"

"Mmm, yes, I am quite aware of that. I think a good part of it is these pokeballs. What do you think it must be like in there? I can't imagine it is all that comfortable. pikachu's is gathering dust in my pocket as we speak."

*character yawns*

"Oh, sorry. Been up for a while now. It's been a strange and eventful day."

"I don't know if they're worldwide, but I've heard stories of them from trainers from all over Kanto.

"Pokéballs are perfectly humane devices; in some situations, they can do a lot more good than harm.

"Oh, I'm sorry," she blushes, "Didn't I mention? The trainers' area is just through that door."

"Well, it was nice chatting with you, but I think I'll go and get some rest." I leave Pikachu in Joy's capable hands, petting Pikachu before going through the door.

After I have slept, I will go retrieve Pikachu and go back to the gym, looking for other trainers to chat with about training.

The gym again has a throng of trainers outside of it, complaining and asking each other rhetorical questions about where to get their Earth badges.

What are you asking?

"Still not here, huh? That sucks. So, I was wondering if any of you has any tips for a starting trainer? I'm really new to this." Hehe. REALLY new to all this.

doublepost

"Sure," one of them tells you. "Try not to lose."

There's a bit of laughter.

"Catch as many Pokémon as you can," another says.

"No, just catch a few Pokémon and focus on their training," another insists.

"As long as your Pokémon know you care about them and you have fun, that's all that counts," another says.

"Care about them? Your Pokémon need to fear you, or they'll never achieve their true potential."

Clearly, there are as many different styles as different people.

I give a withering glare to the person that said that last comment ("Care about them? Your Pokémon need to fear you, or they'll never achieve their true potential."), then say:

"All right, thanks guys. I think it's about time for me and Pikachu to move on, though. I need to take care of some things, then go on to the next town. You happen to know where I can find a Pokemart around here?"

"What," the guy you glare at asks you, "You want to battle?"

Nobody seems to understand what you mean by the question, but one of them inquires, "Isn't there something like that in Viridian city?"

"I thought it was in Saffron," another answers. "A store that sells things only for Pokémon."

Oh, great. They aren't in every city in this world, I guess. Well, I'll try again and see what I turn up.

I roll my eyes at the recipient of my glare, then turn my attention to the questions I am asking.

"Oh, no, I just meant any place that sells basic training supplies, not the mall all the way out there. Pokeballs and such."

There's a short silence, and one of them finally says to you, "Come with me."

She leads you back to the Pokémon Center and shows you how to order a Pokéball using the computer system. Apparently, they're free.

"You can even customize the color, if you like," she informs you, "But most serious trainers don't bother with that."

Oh no, I look like a fool....this world must have some significant differences from the game version when it comes to money and trainer gear.

I say to whomever shows me this: "Huh. Interesting system. Thanks a bunch!" As soon as I can politely extricate myself from this coversation, I'd like to leave town, on the road heading towards Pewter City, and find a nice place to sit and think. After having spent some time assessing the differences between this world and the one I thought it to be, I stand and say to Pikachu:

"Well, my friend, I think it's time we start to actually train. What do you think?" I think to myself...where exactly do I start?
