"It is as I feared. Pikachu, fighting rocks will be incredibly difficult for you. Ever tackle a rock? Ever zap a rock? It isn't very effective...Hmm..."
I head inside and investigate. I am pretty sure I am going to need to catch another Pokemon-or train a really long time with Pikachu-to beat this gym, though.
You see the Gym Leader in the middle of a battle with another trainer; the Gym Leader seems to be winning.
I will stand and watch for a moment, hoping to glean some info about training technique from what they do.
"Caterpie, use string shot!" The challenger's Caterpie shoots the sticky sticky webbing.
"Geodude, rock polish and dodge it!" The gym leader, a light skinned older man with a scruffy beard, thick eyebrows, and a red hat, watches as his Geodude becomes smoother, then pushes off the ground and escapes the web stream.
"Tackle, Caterpie!" Probably a bad move on the part of the challenger to challenge with a Caterpie in the first place.
"Harden, Geodude, and take the hit!" The Geodude braces itself; the Caterpie bounces off of it.
"Now *you* tackle," the gym leader tells Geodude.
*splat*
"No! Caterpie!" The trainer seems very upset as he rushes over to the stain on the ground that was his Pokémon.
"Maybe now you won't waste my time making me fight insects you just caught. If you would actually train them, maybe you'd have a chance. Geodude, return!"
A red light shoots from the Pokéball in the leader's hand, and the Geodude is drawn into the ball.
I shake my head at the trainer's stupidity pretty much as soon as I see that he is using a Caterpie. Even rookies shouldn't be that dumb. Then I walk up to the gym leader, smile, and say: "Hi! I'm Brock, a rookie trainer."
Now, I wait for the inevitable.
oh, and thank god I am not a pretty woman. That would get awkward.
"Brock, huh? My name's Flint. I'm the leader of this gym. I specialize in rock-type Pokémon; you won't find more solid friends."
*ba-dum chih*
"Are you here to issue a challenge for the Boulder Badge?"
wondered if you would use the Brock from the show or not. Hmm...think my character is mildly surprised, but should be able to hide it.
"Solid! That's a good one. Nice play on words, and true as well, I am sure."
"Oh, not quite yet, but I will when I am ready. I thought it would be polite to introduce myself first, let you know my intention. Of course, your particular gym will be somewhat problematic for me...only Pokemon I have right now is Pikachu here" I indicate her with a slight gesture "and electricity doesn't really work on rocks all that well."
He seems rather suprised as well, but doesn't do as well a job hiding it. "You're just starting out as a trainer, but you've got a pretty good feel for type advantages already. That's good. I look forward to grinding your Pokemon into dust.
"I do have some words of wisdom for you, though. One Pokemon isn't going to cut it. You're actually gonna have to get out there and catch some wild Pokemon if you've got any hope of becoming a Pokemon Master. Our gym, for instance, is a challenge for two Pokemon in single combat. Once the first is unable to battle, the respective trainer throws their next. In the Indigo Plateau it's six on six; if you only bring one, that makes it six on one."
"Oh, hey thanks for the compliment. I think It just kind of seems obvious that electrocuting a rock won't do a whole lot, you know?"
"Yes, i had figured I would need to catch more of them, though six Pokemon, all fully raised and trained, seems a little daunting. Hmm...thanks for the help, Flint. You're a pal."
"I'm thinking the best way to do this is to catch several Pokemon, raise them, and test their mettle against other rookies first, then work my way up to more experienced trainers until I feel I am ready. Do rookies hang out around your gym, or anywhere else around here?"
I think Flint was Brock's father and the leader before him...Hmm...
