If this other entity is also "Professor Oak", does that mean that he is an alternate divergent version of me? :o

No, you are a real life divergent from him. :P

The roll that killed Mike was a 30 roll. That's a 1 in 1,000 roll, and it was the first time I had ever seen one rolled.

Let me not assume that everyone knows this. The reason we call it a "one in a thousand worst disaster" is because it really is one chance in a thousand that you'll roll 30. It requires that all three dice match, and since there are a thousand possible permutations of three ten-sided dice, only one of those will be a thirty.

Of course, there's only one chance in a thousand of all three dice matching on any other specific number, too; it's just that apart from 1+1+1=3 and 10+10+10=30 all other matching sets sum to numbers that are reachable by other dice combinations (e.g., 9+9+9=27, but so does 10+9+8 or 10+10+7, and of course each die being discrete that means also 10+8+9, 9+10+8, 9+8+10, 8+10+9, 8+9+10, 10+7+10, and 7+10+10--10 possible combination in a thousand, 1%).

If this other entity is also "Professor Oak", does that mean that he is an alternate divergent version of me?

No, you are a real life divergent from him.

I'm laughing.

Hey Brock, I don't know if your character would go this way, but you could try to make Pikachu jealous. Something like "Oh, it's alright professor Oak, I'll probably find a better and stronger one to take." Or something like that. :P

No, I wouldn't. To me, that would seem disrespectful. I don't try to be antagonistic except as a reaction. It would probably work, though.

Well, I work with kids. Sometimes I need to break down their facade like that. :)

Nik,
I do think your 'ignore the raving narcissist' technique was probably one of the best methods to deal with the Dark Mistress Stephanie. Of course, I prefer the 'beat her about the head until her mind is opened' technique, but hey, that's me.

Heheh, thanks for the compliment (now where did I leave my gold start chart?).

We (child-care people) are trained to reward, punish or ignore. If negative attention (=punishment) is what they are after because they usually don't get good attention (=reward) you have to find a way to give them good attention.

First thing is to let them stop doing bad things and reward the good things they do. Usually they are in a pattern though, and you have to ignore them because no attention is worse than bad attention. (That is why they ask for bad attention, something, anything, is better than none.) But you can't ignore when they endanger themselves or others. Then you have to intervene. Hence the tying her up. I felt really bad about that, but it was the best I could do and think of at the time (and even now).

Also, John, smart move! Well done :) (just read it)

And Eric, thanks for the quick posting.

Say, Niko... did you just say that when your students endanger themselves or others, you tie them up? =P

I was thinking about that when I learned the skill. It intensifies one sense by taking away another. There's got to be a time when it's advantageous to be deaf. This is one of those times.

Hahah, no, we put them in time-out. Or in another room at worst. I do at times hold them until they calm down when they rage. Oh, and that's not my students, but the kids I take care of after and before school :)

If I tie them up I'm out of a job. ;)

That Stephanie girl though was a loose cannon, so I had to do something or she would set the entire ship on fire. She's adult and I had little time to think because another dude wanted to knife her out of that world.

Either way, I already made an inter-dimensional enemy in my first (or second, depends on how you count) world.

EDITED best into worst. What a mistake-ah to make-ah!

MJ, since I know you're going to read this, I think you were right. We were mismatched. You were asking "Will John get involved?" Eric seems to be asking "How will I get John to get involved?" His way is working better, it seems.

There are always players who are mismatched. I had oh, somewhere around half of the players who signed up at RPOL do the walk on me. Some did it immediately without even starting, and some played a tiny bit, and then did it. Of course, most eventually did it after one or several worlds but I'm not counting them.

So it happens.

And yes, I'm a less analytical personality than Mark.

I like different refs with different styles, it keeps me on my toes.

@John in Eric's game:
You probably wouldn't want to not feel pain unless you didn't feel it because it wasn't actually doing damage. The body reacts to pain by acting to prevent the source, that's why you have such a good reaction time removing your hand from a stove top if you set it their by mistake. If you dull your pain sense I would imagine your combat reflexes would drop substantially.

Yeah, but then you wouldn't feel it when you got hit.

Making myself deaf just saved my @$$. I knew there were more uses for that skill than met the eye.

That's what I was getting at John, you can't feel that you just got hit, so you don't move in response to it anywhere near as fast. Your bodies natural reflexes are much better than your minds ability to process exactly what is happening.

Oh, I see. That made more sense.

@ John in Eric's game. You are right, if you are in an action world with Eric, there really is no resting. You will do something, even if it is dying. Then again, you learn, get good, and you can sometimes work out of what would be normally deadly situations.

@Mangus

Eh, that reaction made perfect sense given the initial encounter with the zombies.

All these zombie threads are reminding me of the Urban Dead MMORPG. Fun times, fun times. At least these ones apparently aren't immortal.

@ John 4444 in Kyler's game, seems Ish, has learned and tried a new strategy, divide, mind f and conquer :P

That's been Ishmael the Blackhearted Prince's strategy from the beginning; but Dawn was certainly a thorn in his side with her blind loyalty and sociopathic nature. It's just about time that he finally came up with a way to deal with it, in my opinion; he's been frustrated over it for too long to be believable, what with who he is and all.

It's worth mentioning that Pharaoh has only ever put the ring on his right hand ring finger and never tried it on any other ringer before.

Hey Jhiaxus, want to start a new thread for my game? Seems like a serious glitch in that one if you can't read my responses, but it seems like it only affects that thread.

@ A1nut's game run by Eric: Two things. One, I think you're accusing the hunter of being a person who knocks roosters about, and the ASPCA (or whatever they call themselves today) will be all over you already for shooting those dogs.

Thing two, if nobody else says anything about it, I don't want to hear about the occasional use of adult language in threads I run, since that was way bad enough to warrant censorship.

I don't want vulgarity, and even more so, profanity in my games. I should have said something.

I edited it out. That word was used in Stand By Me, which was PG rated, IIRC. If it's said in a PG kid's movie, it can't be too bad.

(Doing Therapy)

Yeah, it's pretty bad. If you said it at a table and children were present, I'd probably wince worse than if you said damn or hell, but not as badly as if you started dropping f bombs.

Course, if you said buttknocker or fartknocker I probably wouldn't even blink.

@ Kyler running Brock: Team Rocket! Well done. I smiled while reading it. I sure is a bit different from the Dutch rendering, but still very recognizable.

@ Kyler running me: Whenever I leave this world, please don't send me to any more kids' show worlds. Pretty please? With a cherry on top (cherries make everything better!)?

No more kids shows? Drat, and here I was going to send you to Yo Gabba Gabba.

As an aside, it's been brought to my attention that the original animator for the first season of Pokémon recently passed away. R. I. P.

1. What on Earth is Yo Gabba Gabba?

2. Oh, that's too bad...sorry to hear that.

Woops, that last comment was me, Brock...I forgot I had Edgar still logged in. I'm helping him set up his account.

Yo Gabba Gabba is... one of the shows my daughter watches on Nick Jr. It was a joke, but I could easily send someone there, haha.

@Adam's synapsis: Lou Ellen? Oh! You mean Llewelyn! Good strong Welsh name.

@ Kyler, no he was a b**** Lou Ellen, MJ can use the other spelling officially :P

@ Eli's game

I'm going to regret coining a nickname for what Dr. A has, aren't I?

Well, according to the scenario, there are scientists A through Z throughout the world, and you find them one at a time by good GE rolls.

Of course, he is being a real A right now, I'd have to agree.

@Kyler in Nik's game, In Soviet Russia, fish catch you :P

@Ahmetia run by MJ: Well, the scenario is practically over.. I wonder what's next.

John: no profanity. In my view, the posts here suggesting what profanity is less profane than whatever it was you used exceeded acceptable levels of profanity.

Language should be Disney-movie G-Rated. Action and interactions can be PG-13. That is, if you have physical romantic moments, they're allowed as long as they are not described openly. Similarly, obviously we have combat and horror and sometimes it's gory, but--

Well, my concern is that I don't want the spiders that search web sites for child safety software to ban Gaming Outpost. It's very hard to fix that kind of thing.

--M. J. Young

@Ahmetia's game again: Rupert survived?

And... you're all okay with this?

=P Good luck with that.
